About this project
***If you've landed on this page by word of mouth, a tweet, a friend's facebook post or an email thank you for taking the time to consider this project. It is hard to express passion via text but I am going to try.
With the Voices of Korean Adoption I aim to save lives with poetry. After using poetry to bring healing to the mental health field via the Crisis Clinic of King County I now want to bring that same healing to adoptees. On top of that, I have a personal ask. I am a Korean adoptee who is trying to find her biological mother. My adoption agency advised that a fake ID for her was left so they cannot administrate an address search. This is common as many mothers protected their unwed status by making a false identity. it is my goal to use this project/poetry to create enough voice in Korea to try and find her.
In order to this I need your help.
My project will accomplish the following:
1. I will facilitate poetry workshops that will include writing and performance skills, writing prompt exercises, use of imagery, personification, form, editing and more.
2. I will curate a showcase that consists of performances by adoptees. It will give empowerment to their voices and build a community, This showcase will benefit GOAL and/or KoRoot: two major supporters of adoptees in Korea.
3. I will publish two poetry books. The first will consist of the collected poems written by adoptees. The second will consist of poems written on my personal story of being raised a middle class American and stepping into the culture of Korea. These books will examine the concepts of identity, family, dual existence, racism, fear of abandonment, feeling of belonging, community and home.
Once finished, these stories will be shared to further promote connection and community.
As well if this project is funded, I have been given an interview/photo session with Groove Magazine, the #1 English magazine in Korea and am working on networking with TED talks in Seoul. My hope is to use these venues to empower the voice of Korean adoptees and to publically outreach to find my mother.
Please donate to this Kickstarter. Help adoptees all over the world and help me find out where I come from.
Risks and challenges
The challenges I face will be in editing and submitting for publication. I am confident in my ability to do both of these tasks but the editing process can take time. I want quality over a rushed product. As far as publishing goes, if this book is not picked up within a year by a publishing company I will release a self published book of the stories and create a beautiful product on my own, while still submitting the work until it is accepted.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
