About

Breaking the News is a party game in which you and your friends are asked to pitch news stories about different topics and for different outlets. These combinations may range from the absurd to the quite serious, such as:

You pitch stories by putting together "story cards" like "shocking headline" or "Bernie Sanders" or "satiric tone". It all depends on the topic and the outlet. Some outlets might want a more serious story, or others might want a story that would go viral. It's up to you to make a good pitch!

We've been working on Breaking the News over the past year, and we've taken it to experts ranging from Columbia Journalism School professors to digital media companies. We think we've created a thought-provoking and fun little game. We hope you like it.

Get a group of four or more friends and a copy of Breaking the News.

Everyone gets a hand of Story cards to put together their stories from. These range from "double standards" to "Elon Musk" to "personal anecdotes."

One player acts as the editor and takes out an Outlet card and a Topic card that they want to hear pitches for. For example, "pitch a story for Vox on Feminism," or "pitch a story for Last Week Tonight on Climate Change."

The other players use as many cards as they like in their hands to pitch a story, and the editor picks their favourite.

At the end of the game, the winner is whoever was whoever was the most favourited. Just like in social media!

We're planning to ship the game with over 300 cards including...

80 Outlet Cards

80 Topic Cards

150 Story Cards

We’ve currently designed over 300 cards and have priced the decks accordingly. However, if we meet our stretch goals, through the magic of economies of scale, we’ll be able to provide even more for you, our dear backers!

$10,000: 15 cards will be added to your decks as a KICKSTARTER-exclusive.

$15,000: 30 new cards added to our core deck.

$20,000: At this goal, we will add NEW reward tiers— we’ll add subscription-based expansion packs. Every quarter, we’ll send you 20 new cards so your BTN deck is always topical!

Why are we making a game about journalism?

Since the 2016 election and the Russian bot scandals associated with it, there have been a number of games built about fake news. Fake News (ISL Gaming, 2017), FACTitious (JoLT and AU Game Lab, 2017), and mmmews (Wall West Ltd, 2017), among others, invite players to determine whether particular headlines are headlines from real news sources or invented ones from fake sources or comedy sites like The Onion.

These games don’t offer much reflection for the player to consider why they think a headline is “fake” or not, and do not consider the signals beyond the headline and initial impression. These games do not invite serious reflection beyond “it is easy to be tricked by fake news.”

Other games like Bad News (DROG, 2018) or Fake It to Make It (Warner, 2017) examine media literacy from the producers’ perspectives, teaching players about the motivations and techniques used by bad actors to promote fake news. Breaking the News aims, like the swiping games mentioned above, to look at this problem from the consumer’s point of view:

  • What qualities of the news affect our judgement?
  • What qualities of the news do we associate with certain outlet?
  • And what qualities of the news do we think are funny?

We hope this game can be fun, educate, and be a bit thought-provoking. We hope that you'll take this journey with us, and help us break the news.

Risks and challenges

There should not be any major risks or challenges for Breaking the News. The design and content of the card have largely been finalized, so it is a matter of printing and logistics to get these cards to you.

With that said, running into issues is always a possibility, with the usual Kickstarter campaign challenges of fulfillment and print quality to content with. We have given ourselves a good amount of time to fulfill these orders, so you should receive your rewards in time.
