Teddy the Thunderbear is a multi-volume story about learning to believe in yourself no matter how bad things get.
It’s a story about a little teddy bear from Robot City who gets kicked out for being different. He finds a magic cassette tape and embarks on a journey of self discovery deep into the world of Monstrum-- a place once lush with trees and light but now overtaken by the darkness of the Nightmares.
Teddy’s adventure into self-discovery and growth is helped along by a second young protagonist, Adam the Wolf King, who is on his own quest to destroy the Windmills of Marum and "save the radio."
With his best friend Adam leading the way, Teddy comes face to face with conflicts and adventures that require him to put fear aside, take a deep breath and be brave.
He crosses forbidden rivers, throws thunder punches and surfs on magical boomboxes. But, most of all, he helps the Cats and Dogs come together to stop the Nightmares.
Music plays a big role in my story. Like Tolkien, my world was created with music. The mountains, the valleys, the trees and the animals were all created by the musical performances of angels, who I refer to in the story as the Tonics-- those who laid the founding tracks of this world.
There are some in my world who know this and use music as magic. Instead of waving wands, characters cast enchantments by "sounding" secret chords and primal scales.
Unfortunately, music is also used by many of the tribes in the Middle Plain as a means to differentiate themselves from one another. Clans who practice Heavy Metal might look down on the schools of Hip-Hop or the patrons of House music.
Music is, ultimately, a source and catalyst for many things, and musical mash-ups like Rock-Rap are potential solutions to the natural prejudices held by the Cats and Dogs of the Middle Plain.
The goal of this Kickstarter is to publish VOLUME 1 of TEDDY THE THUNDERBEAR by July 1st, 2014. TTTB will be printed in comic book form.
This first volume will contain 30+ full-color pages. If STRETCH GOALS are met, ADDITIONAL VOLUMES of BOOK 1 will be included* at no further cost to backers.
(*ALL BACKERS will receive additional volumes in digital PDF format if stretch goals are met. Backers at BEAR FAN tier and above will receive additional volumes in digital PDF format and in print format if stretch goals are met.)
While VOLUME 1 of TTTB is the focus of this Kickstarter, I'm offering a full range of really cool backer incentives! Every giving tier has something exciting!
In the early reward tiers, you can get some great digital items like a PDF of Teddy the Thunderbear and a special wallpaper set. Some of the exciting physical rewards include a printed copy of the book, prints from our storybook illustrations, a special edition Kickstarter-only printed copy of the book, stickers and a music compilation (inspired by the story and produced by me). Part of the fun in making Teddy has been the drafting process so one of the coolest rewards I'm offering is prints from my sketchbook!
I've also included a number of one-of-a-kind rewards like original watercolor paintings, original ink works, and one of my cool Teddy the Thunderbear inspired art inventions called the Bear Box. This is a very special piece that I designed and built as a birthday present for my girlfriend while I was writing the story. It was inspired by the messaging in Teddy the Thunderbear to always believe in yourself and to keep going no matter what. I'm really excited to be building some more and offering them to you!!
$7500 is our target goal and will be enough to publish volume 1 of TTTB, but if we raise more than that we'll be able to produce additional volumes.
