About this project
In 1989, when I was 9 years old, my father was diagnosed with lung cancer. He underwent surgery which removed an entire lung from his body. For the next nine years, he was in and out of the hospital and always near death. I grew up with a terminally ill parent and it had a profound impact on who I became as a person.
This graphic novel, tentatively titled "Terminal Life" is about that first year when my father was diagnosed, had surgery, and it became apparent that my life had changed forever. This is the story of how, as a child, I came to the realization that my father could die at any moment and how I tried to live with that.
With your funding, I will create this black and white graphic novel. Your contribution to our goal of $6,000 helps me not only print the book, but also provides income for me to take time to draw the book. "Terminal Life" is a project that is deeply personal. I have been making comics for a long time, perhaps you know me from the daily strip "Freaks N Squeeks," but I feel that I've never made a comic as good as I am. This project promises to be the best work I have ever done and the most meaningful.
I believe this project isn't just about me, but is a story that speaks to the human condition. This is a story about family; what a family is even through adversity and changes. This is a story about creating an identity for oneself and learning to persevere through adversity. I believe this is an interesting story not simply because I am an interesting or extraordinary person, but because it is a story that deals with universal truths about what is to be a human and deal with life and death.
I hope you watch the video I've included with this pitch. In that video, I read a selection of text I've written to get this project started. That text will give you an idea of how the story will feel.
Now I'm not just asking for you to donate and get nothing in return! Below are various tiers of donation each with its own reward! I welcome any level of donation! Every little bit helps!
