Look, this is a Kickstarter campaign. We know this should be an upbeat fundraising pitch. We know the music should be cheerful.
But right now? In early 2017? Let’s just say we’re grooving to a different tune.
Does it ever seem to you that the world is becoming uglier, coarser, more vulgar and crass?
Would you care to do something about it? We would, and not in the usual way.
Our project is Full Bleed, a new journal about art, design, and literature. In opposition to the forces that demean humanity, we stand for the civilizing power of aesthetic experience and progressive design.
We’ve started this publication with high ambitions: to inspire, critique, and inform the work of contemporary artists, designers, and writers. Our goal is to create a lively, eclectic forum for criticism and literature, artwork and design that chronicles the diverse ways our readers are participating in this historical moment.
Migration is the theme of our inaugural issue. Features in the pipeline include photography from the Mexican border and Idomeni, Greece, new translations of work by a renowned Palestinian poet, an essay on Slavoj Žižek’s polemic about the refugee “crisis”, and newly discovered poems from the Shoah. The first issue will also include adventurous writing about Edvard Munch, white paint, sand, urban design, and the Whitney Biennial.
We hope you will become a reader – as soon as we launch in May 2017!
Full Bleed will be published annually online and in print by the Maryland Institute College of Art. It’s being produced this semester by a group of highly talented MICA student designers and editorial staff in collaboration with faculty.
As strong believers in the power of print, we look forward to creating a beautiful print journal. For this step we depend on our supporters. Having raised $9,000 from within the college to cover operational costs and to pay our contributors, we seek an additional $3,000 to cover the costs of printing our first issue.
Of course, there are many, many causes to support. But if culture matters to you, and you are at liberty to support just one cultural institution this year, we hope you will make it Full Bleed. We are new and small, but we are up to good things. Do keep in touch, and thank you.
Risks and challenges
Our challenges are unforeseen at this time. We're diligently working toward our publication date and believe the quality, content, and visual stories we're offering our donors and readers will fully appreciate.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
