“To Catch a Falling Knife” is a story that I have been working on for a while now- for over a year. It’s a film about a family that has wrestled with death, a boy with vision beyond his years, and the choices that they make in the midst of a massive solar event that threatens the entire Earth.
It's a bit sci-fi and a bit mythical tale. More than anything, it's a story of family— family caught at the intersection of hope and death.
A few years ago I was diagnosed with cancer- just 6 months after marrying my wife Audrey (who wrote the score for this film.) I’ve never really been good at talking about having had cancer, but I have often noted that through the window of that disease, I have a very strong and peculiar relationship with both death and hope.
WHO AM I?
My last major project was called O Happy Fault and I made it with Audrey Assad. I’ve also had the opportunity to work as a director for Matt Maher and Army of Me and some corporate clients. But I’ve never made any real money on filmmaking. I’d love for it to be my job, but it’s not. And likewise, this project is a passion project. There will almost 100% certainly be no profit.
Yet, I’ve spent the last year saving up to make it.
I'm asking for you all to match what I have invested in this film. There are obviously a lot of expenses involved in filmmaking. I have consistently worked with micro-budgets and I plan on being very thrifty with the budget of this movie. At the same time, without these funds, I’ll need to re-write the script and pull out some of the more exciting and magical moments of the story.
I work best in a collaborative environment. Samuel Cowden is my DP. Zac Dixon my effects supervisor. Audrey Assad is my composer. There's just no way to assemble a great team and film with great equipment in intentionally sourced and created sets without a reasonable amount of funding.
Kickstarter provides this film with the opportunity to go directly to it's future viewers to bring those funds together. It allows you to be a part of that collaborative team. And it allows for some very cool rewards to come together.
I REALLY NEED YOUR HELP LIKE ACTUALLY REALLY FOR REAL
For so long as I’ve been excited about filmmaking, I’ve listened to the voices, literal and metaphorical, that have sad “No, you cannot be a Director.” I’m tired of chickening out and listening to that negativity.
I'm sort of asking for your vote of confidence here. For you to come alongside me and say, “Yes! Do this!” I don't make movies for myself to watch. I make them for you to watch! So whether or not you get in on this Kickstarter party, making this film is pointless without you!
Please invest here, share on your social media sites, and most of all, watch the film this summer.
About the Collaborators
Risks and challenges
Well, it's filmmaking. So the challenges are endless. But this isn't my first rodeo so I'm confident in my ability to deliver.
The biggest risk is to the timeline. I've been generous with the timeline for my own sake, but uniting a crew and actors and locations can be tricky. It's possible that the film isn't finished until a bit later than estimated. But it will be finished!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
