How did Hooves come about?
I've always loved Desert Boots and bought my first pair when I was 17. However, since becoming a vegan and giving up animal products, I've had problems finding classic, well made and affordable non-leather shoes and boots.
So, after wearing canvas plimsolls through two particularly cold and icy London winters, I decided to take seriously the dream of manufacturing my own vegan shoe range.
Since that moment, I busied myself manufacturing samples from several countries, in several styles and using various materials before settling on what has become Hooves' very first product: the Desert Boot.
I've been wearing a pair of prototype Hooves' Desert Boots for three months now and I'm very pleased with how durable, comfortable, breathable and odor-free they are.
I have received many positive comments and questions about my Hooves Desert Boots and take great pride in telling people all about them. I can’t wait to launch Hooves and I am so excited about adding new colours, finishes and lines to our catalogue in 2014 and beyond.
About Hooves Desert Boots
The Desert Boot is a vintage classic first worn as civilian wear by British Army soldiers serving in the Western Desert campaign in North Africa during World War Two.
Since first appearing in British shops in 1950, Desert Boots have been a wardrobe staple for both men and women, young and old. Bob Dylan and the beatniks wore them throughout the sixties. Liam Gallagher famously wore little else (on his feet) throughout the nineties. Now you too can have your very own animal, vegetarian and vegan friendly piece of British sartorial history.
It must be said, and I may be biased, but Hooves' Desert Boots really do look clean, fresh and funky. A little vintage, a little bohemian and very contemporary too. They look great with almost anything from trousers and dresses to shorts and skirts.
Hooves’ version of the Desert Boot is completely vegan friendly, containing no animal products whatsoever. Even the glue used in the manufacturing process is wholly synthetic.
Hooves’ Desert Boots are manufactured in Spain with a breathable microfibre suede upper, microfibre leather lining, a moulded rubber sole and feature our unique customised Hooves eyelets and tags.
At the moment, Hooves' Desert Boots are available in 7 colours. Please note the below colour swatch is approximate:
Hooves are available in the following sizes for women and men:
Hooves T-shirts in black are 100% cotton and feature the Hooves logo in white. T-shirts are available in the following sizes:
S 34/36", M 38/40", L 42/44", XL 46/48", XXL 50/52", XXXL 54/56".
What we need the money for
Hooves will use the money pledged to fund rewards and to place our first modest order for stock to be sold on the website.
Upon successful completion of Hooves’ Kickstarter campaign at 07:00 GMT Monday 3rd March 2014 (23:00 PST on Sunday 2nd March 2014) we plan to meet the below schedule:
Our aim is to deliver all rewards to contributors by 15th May 2014.
Week 1: Send survey for shoe sizes, colours, t-shirt sizes and backer contact details.
Week 2: Collate all surveys, place orders for upper and lining materials and Hooves T-shirts.
Week 3-4: Receive upper and lining materials and place order for manufacture of Hooves’ Desert Boots. The Desert Boot manufacturer has quoted a turnaround time of 30-45 days.
Week 4: Receive T-shirt order and despatch to backers.
Week 6: If you choose the T-shirt only option (option 1), we aim to deliver the T-shirts worldwide by 7th April. However, if you choose an option with shoes AND a T-shirt, we'll send both rewards together for delivery by 15th May.
Week 9-10: Receive Desert Boot delivery from manufacturer. Package orders and ready them for shipment to be received by backers worldwide by 15th May.
Week 11: All rewards should have been received by backers worldwide by 15th May.
My name is Mark Bryceland and I’m the founder and director of Hooves.
I'm a Scottish/Australian/London vegan and a cat sanctuary volunteer with experience of political campaigning and research.
Having been a vegetarian for several years, I decided to transition to veganism after reading ‘Practical Ethics’ by Australian philosopher, Peter Singer, in 2008. It's been a long, steady and enlightening learning curve ever since.
I'm brimming with enthusiasm about Hooves to the extent that my friends and acquaintances must be getting fed up. I’m just so excited to be launching Hooves footwear and I’d love for you to be part of it too.
Please support my Kickstarter campaign today and help spread the word.

Risks and challenges
Although I'm hoping the entire process will go smoothly and according to plan, I'm realistic about encountering unexpected delays and hiccups along the way.
My first priority is to ensure that backers receive their rewards on time. Their backing makes the entire project possible. I am primarily focused on rewarding my backers' extraordinary faith in the project, the product and in me.
With this in mind, I have taken the precaution of sampling all the rewards to gauge realistic delivery times for each and I have sought realistic delivery time frames from each manufacturer involved.
Once the Kickstarter project has closed and your chosen sizes and colours have been gathered, we can begin to order the materials for manufacture.
In the case of the microfibre uppers and lining, we anticipate a delivery time of 10-14 days.
In the specific case of the Desert Boot, the manufacturer has estimated a turn-around time of 30-45 days. As an added precaution, I have factored their maximum estimation time into my delivery deadline of 15th May 2014.
I intend to publish regular project delivery updates so backers can be kept fully informed of the manufacturing process, and any delays, at every stage until successful delivery of all rewards. I will, of course, be delighted to respond to your questions and comments.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
