My name is Anthony M. Olver, and as you may have guessed by the strange currency in this Kickstarter, I live in Australia. I am the author of the short story "One Last Hope" in the forthcoming ELITE ENCOUNTERS RPG by Dave Hughes, and author of the short story "Lisa Lives" in the forthcoming SHORT SCIENCE FICTION ANTHOLOGY from Fantastic Books Publishing. I have a rather large collection of ELITE games and memorabilia and hope through this Kickstarter to share that collection, along with our history of ELITE, with you all in the form of a beautiful paperback or hardback book.
I have partnered with Fantastic Books Publishing who will handle the proofreading, editing, typesetting and layout, printing, and distribution. All books will be printed and posted from within the UK. To keep things simple, all pledges include postage, with only COMPETENT and DANGEROUS having a separate worldwide pledge level to cover additional postage costs. Any paid add-ons may incur a small postage charge to help cover our costs depending on the item.

What is this Kickstarter Actually For?
This Kickstarter aims to produce the FIRST EVER book that details the history of the seminal space trading and combat computer game ELITE from its humble beginnings through to the dawn of ELITE: Dangerous. Rather than focus heavily on words, the book will primarily be a visual journey taking readers on a walk down memory lane showing the beautiful variety of the original ELITE computer game releases, through the sequels FRONTIER: ELITE II and FRONTIER: FIRST ENCOUNTERS to the beginnings of ELITE: DANGEROUS.
Some readers have travelled this journey before, others joined in along the way, and a few can join now for the first time and take a look back 30 years to where it all began...
A selection of covers from the original ELITE boxed games
My Story, Our Story...
I was first awestruck by the wonders and possibilities of ELITE during a computer science course at school in nineteen eighty something. The classroom was filled with Commodore 64s like the one I had at home, but there were a few 'old' green-screen BBC Microcomputers too. I remember the sheer amazement when our teacher loaded ELITE onto one of the BBCs and showed us the unimaginable. I immediately wanted to get ELITE for my Commodore 64! I can't recall how long it took to finally get the boxed game, but I can recall the days and weeks and months that I, and my friends, enjoyed flying through IAN BELL's and DAVID BRABEN's utterly amazing world.
I still have that very same game today. The box is long gone, the cover is missing from the Space Traders Flight Trading Manual, the Dark Wheel cover is barely hanging in there, and I only recently found the game cassette following a house move. The one thing that meant more than any of that was my saved game file, which I also found buried amongst a box of old cassettes. ELITE was the world I could escape to as a child. The game and saved file still work almost 30 years later. So too does the magic.
Over the intervening years (on and off I must admit) I have gradually added to my collection of ELITE games and memorabilia. Mostly in the last few years. The sheer number of variations and versions is mind boggling!
Not just ELITE, but FRONTIER: ELITE II and FRONTIER: FIRST ENCOUNTERS.
Boxed game covers from FRONTIER: ELITE II and FRONTIER: FIRST ENCOUNTERS (including the US release of FFE)
This story is not just about my history with ELITE. This is about all of our histories. About our enjoyment, about our difficult times, about making new friends and losing them, about a community, and above all about remembering ELITE, FRONTIER: ELITE II, and FRONTIER: FIRST ENCOUNTERS.
Right on Commanders!
The Elite Archives book will be at least 200 pages of ELITE goodness and will be printed in at least a 10" x 8" format on a premium lustre full colour paper.
The book is available in print through this Kickstarter as a PAPERBACK, HARDBACK and a LIMITED SPECIAL EDITION HARDBACK.
The LIMITED SPECIAL EDITION HARDBACK is limited to 30 copies only. Ever. It will be presented in the best possible way that we can make it and will include a very special unique cover treatment that will never again be seen on this book. We are planning on either a leather-look cover, or if funding permits, a full leather cover. There are only 27 COPIES available through this Kickstarter. The Elite Archives are retaining one copy, gifting one copy to Frontier Developments, and gifting one copy to Fantastic Books Publishing.
The majority of the $30,209 (approx. £16,600) goal is set aside to cover printing, packaging and postage costs. It will cover the Kickstarter and Amazon fees, as well as all of the costs associated with producing the book including proofreading and editorial tasks, cover design, and promotion.
Different pledge tiers have different signed bookplates ranging from the kickstarter exclusive bookplate at the COMPETENT level through to the ELITE kickstarter exclusive bookplate at the ELITE levels. These are an extra feature to say thank you and to protect your investment in this project and will NOT be included in any copies produced outside of this kickstarter.
Inside the Archives
A book about ELITE could almost be as large as the galaxy itself (figuratively speaking of course), so it is important to define exactly what we intend to cover in the book.
A recent photo showing the Elite Archives collection of games
The book will feature images from over FIFTY DIFFERENT VARIATIONS of ELITE, FRONTIER: ELITE II, and FRONTIER: FIRST ENCOUNTERS boxed games including:
- crisp oversized images of the game packaging,
- highly detailed close-ups of points of interest,
- full and double page spreads showing the complete contents of the original boxed games,
- detailed images of the different media types from 5.25" floppy disks through to CD-ROMs used for various versions,
- and much more...
A concept picture showing the type of page layout we have planned.
The book will also feature game related imagery including:
- original in-game screen shots from genuine 80s and 90s machines,
- images of ELITE, FRONTIER: ELITE II, and FRONTIER: FIRST ENCOUNTERS running on original machines,
- images of original magazine advertising from the 80s and 90s,
- excerpts from magazine reviews of the games,
- detailed images of promotional material,
- and much more...
Accompanying this beautiful collection of ELITE images will be a narrative journey leading the reader through the collection and beyond in way similar to a guided tour through the Elite Archives collection itself.
Some of the things you may find inside The Elite Archives...
Along with the games themselves, the book will also include information on a number of features covering a variety of ELITE related content such as:
- the rich history of Elite and its successors,
- appendices featuring keyboard commands, cheat codes, review references, etc,
- the recently released ELITE novels,
- reviews of original games and gameplay by guest reviewers (more on this during our updates...)
- extracts from unseen proofs of FBP fiction and audio,
- letters issued for the Firebird 1985 ELITE World Championship,
- coverage of fan conventions such as Lavecon and FantastiCon (If you were there your photo could be in the book!),
- official (and unofficial) merchandise,
- a checklist of every version and variant of the games that we know of,
- game reviews by official ELITE Fiction authors,
- and much more...
A small sample of our collection of images from the Firebird 1985 ELITE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS that will be included in the book.
As vast as the Elite Archives collection is, there are still a few versions of the games that are missing. Other ELITE fans have agreed to provide additional high quality images to make this book as complete as possible.
Commanders, please feel free to interrupt your regular forum banners with the following for the remaining duration of the project. Remember to include a link back here so that new Commanders don't get lost in the void. Right on!
Risks and challenges
Time, Quality, and Commander Dan...
There are normally a number of common risks associated with producing and delivering a book of this nature. The most common by far is that it just simply is not ready for printing at the right time. The delivery time is realistic for a book of this nature and includes some contingency for potential delays. A large portion of imagery for the book has already been captured. Some of the images we may be using can be viewed on the Elite Archives website at www.elitearchives.co.uk
The overall quality of the book is important to me, as I am sure it is to you as well. To that end I have arranged a partnership with Fantastic Books Publishing to manage the layout, editing, proofreading, printing, and distribution of the book. This is their job, they do it well, and I want nothing other than for this book to be Fantastic!
Of course one potential risk in partnering with Fantastic Books Publishing is that we may be subjected to more of Commander Dan's video antics. He should be busy organising all of the remaining rewards from the FEF kickstarter, laying concrete, fixing plumbing, talking to toy lizards, and other important stuff that publishers do. However, he has promised to pop in from time to time for a chat and a video. I will work closely with Gabi from FBP to ensure that Commander Dan behaves himself and stays on task whilst he is assigned to "Mission - Elite Archives Book"
