The story of the "Conquering" series
Conquering Northern China is the second adventure in our "Conquering" series; we'll be riding through seven of China's northern provinces (Shandong, Hebei, Tianjin, Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang and Inner Mongolia), experiencing the local customs, weird and wonderful foods, minorities, rural villages, beautiful landscapes and much, much more.
SerpentZA and Laowhy86 will avoid all highways, skip all of the typical tourist traps and go off the beaten track on their custom hand built 125CC motorcycles. You can expect a thoroughly entertaining, epic adventure!
We plan to start the adventure at the end of May 2017.
Last year we self funded, Conquering Southern China, and released it on Vimeo On Demand; we received overwhelmingly positive feedback from viewers and critics.

Who are SerpentZA and Laowhy86?
SerpentZA is Winston Sterzel, the original China vlogger; he's been living in China for over 11 years. He's built his Youtube channel over the past 6 years, amassing 140,000 subscribers. https://www.youtube.com/user/serpentza
Laowhy86 is Matthew Tye who also goes by the nickname, C-Milk; he's been making videos about China for 5 years. His Youtube channel has gained over 77,000 subscribers. https://www.youtube.com/user/laowhy86
They both produce videos about China to show the world what it's like to live here based on their own personal experiences. Through their videos, many foreigners, who would usually only hear about China when it appears on Western news in a negative light, have been introduced to parts of this fascinating country, and its culture, that they otherwise wouldn't have known existed. In fact, many foreigners have actually moved to China because of Winston's videos. You can learn more about SerpentZA by watching this short documentary produced by Chinese state media:
Both SerpentZA and C-Milk share a passion for motorcycles, adventure and China; this led to the guys coming together and creating their joint Youtube channel, ADVChina, which now has over 75,000 subscribers. This is their adventure talk-show on two wheels: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwNPa8fSXzzAZuT9859GVhg
They both know the language. They know the culture. They don’t need translators or guides. They are the perfect hosts for these authentic, genuine China adventure series.
Candid Pictures is an Independent UK production company that was set up in 2015 to create, Conquering Southern China, the first of our "Conquering" series.
We are a small, experienced team based in Beijing. Rik Afonso (producer/director) and Mark Masterton (director) have worked with, and had their work shown worldwide on, the likes of CNN, Bloomberg, Sky, Amazon, Eurosport, CCTV, Beijing TV and many more.
Where the money goes
This kind of series is very expensive to produce for a variety of reasons: we're going to be on the road for a month, which means accommodation for the the cast and crew for an entire month, petrol (gas) for the bikes and the follow car for those long 12 hour slogs on treacherous mountain roads. There's also the cost of the rental follow car and its driver, shipping the bikes to Qingdao, getting the cast, crew and gear to Qingdao and back.
We have much of our own equipment but there are still key bits of necessary gear that we need to rent to ensure the series is produced in the highest quality possible.
This list is endless, and we are asking for the bare minimum we need to pull this off.
Thank you! 谢谢大家
Without your help this series won't be possible, so we really appreciate your support. We're excited to get back on the road and can't wait to find out what rural northern China has to offer.
If you have any suggestions for interesting things that we can do or see in northern China, or if you have any questions about the production, please contact the team here: candidpicturesfilm(at)gmail.com
And we must stress that while all suggestions are welcome, we do not want to see touristy things and we won't be going to many major cities. So please, no suggestions to go to Beijing and visit the summer palace, or to go to Harbin to eat ice cream. We're interested in local minority culture, weird and wonderful local cuisines, fascinating people and beautiful scenery. We also want SerpentZA and Laowhy86 to get their hands dirty!
Once again, thank you so much for your support, and we'll see you in the north.
Risks and challenges
We’ll be riding through rural China for a month, and we are fully aware of the dangers that we may encounter. People often drive erratically and carelessly, without any consideration for others on the road, especially motorbikes. To combat this, we have set up an intercom system that allows SerpentZA and Laowhy86 to be in constant communication with each other, also with the crew in the follow car. We will use this system to look out for one another and forewarn of any upcoming possible danger. This was incredibly effective on Conquering Southern China and kept the whole team safe.
There is always a slight chance of us being told to stop filming in sensitive areas or worse, having our footage and/or equipment confiscated. This, however, is fairly unlikely as we have tons of experience filming in China. We can speak Chinese and know the culture. We are very respectful towards the local people and their customs, and we will be well prepared for this exciting adventure. We also know how to get ourselves out of sticky situations. ;)
We aim to have the edit completed by the end of October 2017, which we think is very achievable, and only serious, unexpected hurdles will slow us down. We’ll be working on this full time and don’t need to rely on external entities.
Documentary filmmaking is always very challenging, but we won’t let anything get in the way of creating an incredible series for all of you to enjoy.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
