Vonnegut/Kraft Studio is a young design/build partnership that produces limited editions of handmade furniture and textiles. The studio was formed when furniture and textile designer/maker Katrina Vonnegut met furniture and cabinetmaker Brian Kraft. Together we began making custom furniture commissions for both private and commercial clients. In our spare time, we started to collaborate on design projects, one of which is a bed that we call the Maize bed.
This piece was intended to fulfill a simple set of formal and functional ideals: to create a comfortable place to sleep that's composed of traditional structural elements while cutting material away, creating a decorative pattern with negative space, and making more while using less. We wanted to make a bed that's simple and intuitive: consisting of an easy to assemble/knock down set of bed rails, head- and foot-board, and a bundle of slats, the piece is lightweight and transportable.
Since creating the prototype, we've had a lot of interest in this bed and we're currently designing a few other pieces that we hope to prototype in the next month or so. Our goal is to present the bed, along with these new pieces as well as a line of machine knit bedding and printed textiles in the Spring 2012 International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York City. In order to do this we really need your help! We hope to raise the money required to pay for the booth at the show in which we'll exhibit our products. As with all other projects we've made up until now, we've got plenty of material and and shop production expenses, We're simply hoping that, with your help, we can come up with enough funding to cover the exhibition fees. Every donation, big or small, will help, and we'll show our appreciation by offering our unique, lovingly handcrafted rewards at each level. Thanks!
