The end of the world is perceived by many as a terrible and horrific event, in particular by the Earth who doesn't see why it should go just because human civilisation has gone down the pan. It always said that it never liked humans, unfortunately for it no one ever listened. Anyway, the point is that almost all life on Earth was killed during the third attempt at Doomsday (the two previous attempts being such colossal failures that they were hurriedly suppressed). Now a small band of survivors must cross a dangerous post-apocalyptic wasteland to complain that one lady's recycling hasn't been taken away. Because, honestly people, standards have to be maintained.
Don't Worry; It's Only the End of the World is the world's first sitcom ever to have a semi-colon in the title but, more importantly, it's also a six-part post-apocalyptic British radio sitcom written by Alfie Shaw. Each episode will be roughly half an hour long and is inspired by previous comedies such as The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Monty Python's…well everything really and Red Dwarf, as well as being influenced by all kinds of post-apocalyptic fiction ranging from the Fallout game series to novels like Cormac McCarthy's The Road and Russell Hoban's Ridley Walker.
However to get it made, we're going to need your help to raise the budget. The money will be spent on technical equipment, a recording space, actor's costs, music and sound design, and production costs such as fulfilling backer rewards. We aim to start recording the show at the end of 2014 and the beginning of 2015, with a view to having it available for online distribution in late March 2015.
Thank you so much to everyone who has donated and helped us reach our target. Our first stretch goal is £1650. If we reach it, we'll be able to give the series a full soundtrack, instead of the few musical stings we initially had planned!
To give you a flavour of the series, here's a little preview clip. In it Betty (one of our survivors) calls the Post Office helpline in order to try and complain.
- The Narrator - Alfie Shaw
- Owen - Joe McCarthy
- Summer - Eva Marie Wilshere
- Betty - Sarah Iles
- Badger - Ade Foiadelli
- Andrew - Tom Rees-Williams
The regular cast is made up of wonderful actors and stand-up comedians who all have years of experience performing, as well as the idiot who wrote it because he's cheap. We'll be announcing guest stars as the series processes, but we're very pleased to reveal that Phil Jerrod will be making an appearance as a Latin addicted monk. For those of you who don't know Phil, he's a rapidly rising comedy star and we're very glad to have him on board. As Chortle puts it, "Jerrod…seems destined to become a comedy connoisseur's favourite."
There are a variety of pledges and they net you various levels of rewards. If you donate a mere £1, you get the series sent to you upon completion as well a separate MP3 of our cracking theme tune. Now while you could just give a pound, and we'd be grateful for it, for just a little more you get a whole range of extras. Please note these extras accumulate, so if you give £10 for example, you'll get all the lower pledge rewards as well.
For £5, you'll get all of that as well as PDF copies of all the scripts and a great big thank you on our website. If you feel like doubling that to £10, you'll get all of that as well as EXCLUSIVE behind the scenes content. While the exact nature of these have yet to be decided, it will definitely contain backstage pictures, interviews with cast and crew and a few other extra little treats.
Double up again to £20 and you'll get an EXCLUSIVE KICKSTARTER EPISODE, not available to anyone else. While this isn't finished yet, it is the prequel story for some of the characters. Push that up to £25 and you'll get a physical copy of our wonderful poster (see above). If you'd like a SIGNED copy of said poster or a SIGNED physical copy of one of the scripts, then you'll need to donate £30. Sorry about the couple of quid extra attached for outside UK donations, that's just to help cover delivery costs.
Feeling particularly generous? If you do, we'll make sure to reward you for it. For £50, you'll get a personalised voice message from one of the regular cast. Please be aware, that this is subject to the content of the desired message and the availability of the cast. We're a pretty liberal lot, just nothing too extreme please.
Got something you really hate? Then sit back, relax and let the Narrator have a PERSONALISED RANT on your behalf about whatever it is that is annoying you. To make sure that someone else is complaining about the issues that drive you crazy, donate £75 and it will be sent to you as a separate MP3.
For those whose generosity knows no bounds, and goes into triple figures, we have two rewards especially for you. For anyone who gives £100, an executive producer credit on both all the episodes and on our website. For anyone who wants to come visit us during a recording date to see the whole thing being made, then that opportunity is all yours for £150. We have limited this to the UK for convenience of everyone involved and I'm afraid we can't cover travel or accommodation if you will need it.
If a relationship can survive the end of the world, it'll probably survive anything else. Which is just as well for Summer and Owen, as they have to face off things that they never thought possible. Men in giant robot exo-suits. An extremely middle-class marauder. The perils of recycling.
Toffee the rabbit wants them dead. Toffee the rabbit won't stop until they're dead. Toffee the rabbit doesn't care if they have the fired fifth horseman on their side or that they're hiding in his bar. Toffee the rabbit can wait. Toffee the rabbit must be held if you want to speak. They didn't hold Toffee the rabbit. So Toffee the rabbit wants them dead.
Immortal man seeks rough and dependable wastelanders in order to rig card game for fountain of youth. Ability to find the rules of card game so that Immortal man can rig it, essential. Hostages with the names Summer and Andrew, an advantage…
Murder! Murder! There's been a murder! Lawyer's wife brutally murdered by Gravity! Trial starts today! Celebrities to testify! Sir Issac Newton making a statement! Death to make an appearance! Gravity hires defence team! A defence team comprising of Betty and Summer!
As ever, the Roman Gods are bored. They've been very bored for a long time, but it seems their luck is turning. New mortal playthings have arrived, so it's time for the games to begin a new. But even if the mortals survive their trials, they won't survive the god's wrath. No one can survive that.
Well, you'll find out.
Haven't convinced you yet? Here's another preview clip, containing the world's only review of the apocalypse.
We really hope that you love this project as much as we do and want to pledge, or just take a little risk on us to see what happens, or even hate us and want to donate as an act of self-loathing. The show has gone down really well with everyone we've shown the scripts to and we think you'll enjoy the finished show. The show can't be made without us reaching our target, so we really hope that you'll donate however much you can/want.
Our thanks to everyone below who has helped this project get this far:
- Theme composed by Tom Dawkins
- Theme produced by Joseph Murray
- Edited by Jack Webber
- Poster Art by Leena Zaheer
- Additional Poster Design by Jack Webber
- Special thanks to Charlotte Wildblood, Sam Cleal, Rebekka Turner, Chris Gates and Vincent Whittaker.
Risks and challenges
The good news is that a lot of the behind-the-scenes goings on have already been sorted, with the scripts either being finished or in the late drafting stage, our theme tune being done, and an editing master in place to make sure everything is in the right order and sounding fantastic. The main challenge to this project's completion is our actor's schedules.
The only things left to do are cast the rest of the guest roles - which we're well into the process of doing - record it and have the rest of the soundtrack made (again, we're already talking to people about making this happen). So, while there are a few minor challenges that we still need to overcome, we do not foresee any risks of any size.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
