I have been making art with The Secret Species since 2007. People always tell me I need to make a children's book and I collect children's books myself. So finally this year I made it a goal to tell a story about my characters.
I plan to use all funding to self-publish a 52 page full-color hard cover children's book. The book tells the story of a girl and her dog who discover a lovable group of creatures called The Secret Species. The friendly characters get into a bit of trouble and the girl must send them home to where they belong.
2000 dollars will print 125 books and cover shipping. Extra profit will go to printing copies for schools and self-promotion. I have used the Secret Species to work with school children to encourage them to make art and write. This book will be another way to connect our creativity.
This project was originally inspired by my love of designer toys, Pictoplasma, scruffy mutts, and folk art. My favorite artist is William Steig.
Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge for my project is trying to get books to supporters in time for the holidays although my project states I can not guarantee a December delivery date. However, should production issues arise, I have committed to drawing original greeting cards featuring characters of the book that can be used to give as a gift announcement.
The other challenge will just be processing a potentially large number of orders if the project is funded. Fortunately, I am in education and have plenty of free time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
