EXTRA STRETCH GOAL MAKES BRUCKNER CD HAPPEN!
We are nearing our 'Absolutely' goal amount thanks to our fantastic backers! This campaign has been a real boost for us is every way. Thank you all so much for your support. Since the campaign is going so well, we have decided to add a stretch goal.
Pledges beyond £3,400 will go towards another unfinished FSQ recording project that has been gathering dust for some time now, Bruckner's String Quintet and String Quartet on gut strings with violist James Boyd. The music has already been recorded by engineer Phil Hobbs (Linn Records) but we need to raise £1,200 to pay for editing. Anton Bruckner wrote only one Quintet for two violas, which has been called a "symphony for five strings" due to it's epic proportions. It is a stunning and little-known work though well-loved by Bruckner aficionados. Paired with this is his only string quartet, a delightful early work which, when compared to the later Quintet, shows just how much Bruckner's skill as a composer matured over the twenty years spanning the two works.
If the stretch goal is met, what does this mean for our backers?
If you pledge, or have already pledged £20 and more, you will receive a free copy of the Bruckner CD in addition to your chosen reward if we meet our stretch goal. We think it'll be another really interesting recording well worth pledging for!
Update 13/09/13 - Fantasia and Fantastic Backers
Here is another sample from ABSOLUTELY to say thank you to our fantastic backers: Fantasia no.11 by Henry Purcell with improvisation by Steinmetz.
Hello and welcome to Fitzwilliam String Quartet's Kickstarter page!
ABSOLUTELY is a recording that fuses Jazz, Classical and Folk styles with exciting results. It features original compositions by Uwe Steinmetz, and Classics by Bach and Purcell with jazz improvisations by Uwe Steinmetz (saxophone, orkon flute) and Mads Tolling (violin), along with us, the Fitzwilliam String Quartet. This music is unique and we think you’ll ABSOLUTELY love it! Don’t just take it from us though. This is what David Balakrishnan (violinist, composer and founder of the Turtle Island String Quartet) has to say about the music:
"Beautiful, evocative, compelling, dense at times while deeply tinged in heart and soul, Uwe Steinmetz’s brilliant original compositions and visionary arrangements of classical masterworks are eminently suited for the lens of the modern day string quartet form. Masterfully brought to focus by the Fitzwilliam String Quartet, enriched and enlivened by jazz violin wizard Mads Tolling, and highlighted by the composer’s own hard swinging virtuosic saxophone playing, the new record of Uwe Steinmetz and the Fitzwilliam String Quartet is a must-listen for anyone with ears for what’s happening in contemporary cross-genre music making."
Feel free to have a listen to our title track 'Absolutely' by Uwe Steinmetz:
Here's why we need you: we've made what we think is a fantastic recording and now we want to get it out there with a Divine Art Records Artist Package. We believe so much in this music that we’ve already dug deeply into our own pockets to the tune of £3200. This has ensured top-notch recording and editing (Thank you Andrew Hallifax!), flights to London for Mads (USA), Uwe (Germany), and Andrew (Sweden), and covered all the extras that go along with it (trains, venue hire, accommodation, feeding). Now sadly our pockets are empty. Our final obstacle will be to raise the funds to pay for a Divine Art Records Artist Package (£3000) and the CD cover artwork (£400), for a total of £3400. The Package includes everything - pressing, online sales, marketing, advertising, promoting, distributing. We’ve worked with Divine Art in the past and were really happy with the results. Please help us raise the funds for professional help so that we can bring ABSOLUTELY to you and the world!
We'll be playing tracks from the new CD at King’s Place 'Out Hear' Series in London on Sunday January 19th, 2014 and we have several invitations for concerts in other countries. Keep an eye on the FSQ website and Facebook page for updates.
Risks and challenges
The good news is that there is very little risk if we are funded. The music has already been recorded and we've worked with Divine Art Records previously. We know that they are going to deliver.
Releasing a new recording is the best way we can promote ourselves in this fast paced world, and one of our biggest challenges is finding the funding to do this. There have been big changes in the recording industry since the FSQ started out (over four decades ago!). The days of lavish record label funding are over, and independent self-started projects are the new order of the day. Your support can help us break even on our cost of a Divine Art Records Artist Package, so that we can leave it to the professionals to get ABSOLUTELY out there while we focus on our music. Please remember that with Kickstarter, if we do not hit our minimum goal, we are left unfunded entirely.
We are completely and ABSOLUTELY grateful for your contribution to this project. Please consider "liking" our Fitzwilliam String Quartet page on Facebook and sharing the news of our Kickstarter project with your friends.
