Hello, my name is Gillmer Duran, Artistic Director and choreographer of Alaska Dance Theatre. As a physical artist I am interested in movement that comes from a resonant place in our body informing the way we experience space, gravity, time, absence of light and the reality of dance.

What is Flat Out -DARK?

Recently, my choreography has been selected to participate in the Boston Contemporary Dance Festival. Flat Out-DARK is a new work created to explore notions about physical thinking, weight recognition and spacial awareness inspired by our relationship with the environment and the presence or absence of light.

Risks and challenges

Alaska is a very unique place. “The last frontier” is known for breathtaking landscapes, extreme weather conditions, long and dark winters and abundance of natural resources.
One of my goals is to create works that engage audiences, ignite conversations about art while shifting ideas about local artistry increasing the significance of our cultural landscape. This is the first time our work has been invited to a festival. We have been working on the choreographic material since July 8th and it's been extremely rewarding to work in the studios creating dance rather than working in a coffee shop or in a gym. As dancers we feel extremely motivated by doing what we love and being part of something with a potentially larger impact.

Participating in the Boston Contemporary Dance Festival will allow me and three talented dancers to share our work with peers, build connections with a larger dance community, while giving us exposure and credibility beyond our frontiers.

We need to raise $3,550 to cover travel expenses and pay a small -but meaningful!- stipend to each of our talented dancers.

The BCDF Performances will be held at the Paramount Center at 559 Washington Street, on August 17th in Boston Massachusetts. The festival organizers will provide rehearsal space, lighting designer, coordinate for some local transportation and room accommodations for 3-4 days.

We are truly honored to be invited and excited to share our creative voices with Boston’s dance community..!

Please, help us to support this project and bring Flat Out-DARK to the Boston Contemporary Dance Festival. We will be eternally grateful and you -in all your awesomeness- will be a catalyst for change, bringing us much needed discovery and a little bit of light to our dance scene. You will also enjoy the coolest rewards..!
