About this project
Now, don't get me wrong, the symphonic soundtrack by Jeremy Soule is fantastic. But sometimes when you're gaming, you're just in the mood for something...different. Electronic music can represent a fresh change during the hundreds of hours you are sure to put into this game.
Guild Wars 2 allows you to customize the following playlists: Ambient, Battle, Underwater, City, Crafting, BossBattle, NightTime, and MainMenu. This allows for a huge array of styles ranging from trance, house, ambient, drum and bass, and so forth. I anticipate that this soundtrack will cover many different styles but be consistent with the themes that the playlists represent.
BRAG ALERT: Though I don't like to soapbox about my own skill set, I think it's important to give everyone an overview of my credentials to compose and produce quality techno music. First off, let me say that I am an independent artist. That's another way of saying I don't make a living by making music. However, music is a true passion of mine and I've been composing electronic music for over 14 years. I work primarily with FLStudio (formerly FruityLoops) and own the XXL Edition along with a variety of add-ons. I've produced 5 full-length albums that covered all types of electronic styles. My music has been featured on DVDs, video games, machinima, and websites. You can listen to some of my music over at OurStage:
This website is partnered with MTV as a talent search site and has been featured in a variety of TV programming. Since joining the site last year, my songs have hit the monthly "Top 40 Electronica" chart 4 times.
I also have 3+ years experience working at syndicated broadcast radio stations. I've worked mixer boards, produced live shows, and edited together a variety of audio samples in a professional capacity.
**END CREDENTIAL FEST**
So why music for Guild Wars 2? Well, I myself am a huge Guild Wars fan. I played the heck out of the original game and all its expansions. I was a contributor to the community as well, making over a dozen machinima films under the name "Max Damage Studios". Most of our Guild Wars machinima is still available here:
I am incredibly excited about the release of Guild Wars 2 and wanted to once again contribute to the fantastic community that Guild Wars has built. When I heard about the easily customizable in-game music, I saw a unique opportunity to provide some different styled music to the players.
It's also possible that you've found this project and are thinking "I like electronic music, but I don't plan on playing Guild Wars 2." No problem! All the music that I will create will be delivered to you in standard formats and you can play the tracks to your heart's content, without owning or installing the game. When it comes to uses, this project is dual wielding.
So what's the money for? Glad you asked. Let me break it down!
1. Synthesizer - Much of my home studio is already built. For most straight-up trance with a beat, you can get away with not having a true synth (as I have done for years). However, considering the breadth of styles that will be necessary for this project, a successful soundtrack will require a true professional synthesizer. Synths can construct dynamic sounds and create variability far beyond pre-recorded or "sampled" techno. Especially for ambient music, that variability adds to the distant and background feel of the music (as opposed to a repeated, recognizable melody). I'll need to actually have a hardware synth for this project to be sucessful. I've always been a fan of Korg and I've got my eye on the Korg M50 61-Key Music Workstation. I estimate this will cost around $1070 after tax.
2. Various audio cords - Anyone who's delved into music knows that recording quality cords are expensive. I'm budgeting $100 for various cords I'll need to ensure the quality of the recordings.
3. CD printing and shipping costs - For those pledging at $25 and above, there will be a physical CD reward. I am getting these printed by discmakers.com. We are printing an actual album with cover art, insert art, CD art and back art. To account for the projected demand of CDs and the cost to ship them to you, I am budgeting $850 for this item.
4. I will be hiring an artist to create the album art for the CD. She does amazing work and is charging $200 for everything we need.
Synth - $1070
Audio cords - $100
CDs - $850
Artist - $200
This comes out to $2220. To account for Kickstarter and Amazon fees, the final project goal comes to $2500.
In the end, this is quite modest considering the scope of work involved. I truly want this project to happen. I want to give something back to a community that has meant a lot to me over the years. This project is a way to show the world that the Guild Wars community can come together to do something great. Guild Wars has always been about more than just the game: it's been about us: the players. We have shared our experiences and huddled around computers waiting with bated breath for the next Guild Wars 2 announcement. Now is our chance to come together again by helping build content for the game that will be ready when it's released. Get involved, and then tell a friend, post it to your guild forum, shout it at your local mall (though this may create an awkward moment of public confusion). You get the idea. This can't happen without your support! Pledge and then spread the word! Let's make Guild Wars 2 even more awesome.
