CuentoMania: Going Crazy for Storytelling in Our Community
CuentoManía is a Spanish-language literary talent show/writing contest that engages and involves the Spanish-language community in a “mania” for stories written, performed & presented by and to South Florida audiences. First launched at Books & Books, this “live reading” of short stories, from 15 semi-finalists, is hosted by Chascas, the popular soap opera writer, and judged by the audience itself. Contestants compete through several rounds of readings, to yield a single winner. After a successful, three-year run, it is now poised to expand into an ongoing series that identifies, presents (and potentially will publish) new writers’ voices from Spanish-speaking neighborhoods. Created by Pedro Medina León, founder and editor of Suburbano (an online literary magazine) and Gloria Noriega (a Random House sales representative based in Miami), these organizers now seek funds to strengthen outreach, production, and marketing, in partnership with Miami Book Fair, Books & Books and the Betsy Hotel.

Why do we need your support?
CuentoManía has been organized by phases, objectives and goals. The first phases were to launch the project and reach an audience. The third phase was to reach a greater audience and present CuentoManía at the most important literary event, in Spanish, in the United States: The Miami Book Fair. This phase was a success and the presentation was held in a room with a full audience. Now, the next and current phase is one of the greatest challenges for CuentoManía. The goal of this new phase is to publish the first short story collection of CuentoManía stories and here is where we need your support. For that purpose we have estimated a budget for editorial and publisher fees as well as for publishing, printing marketing and promotion of the book. CuentoManía is currently “financed” thanks to the dedication and sacrifice of a very close and small crew of colleagues who believe that this beautiful project is necessary in the Spanish speaking community of Florida, but the time has come to take a step forward and look for financing of third parties who also believe that this project is vital for the community.

Risks and challenges
The challenge of CuentoManía is definitely to make the leap and reach even more people. The cultural community of Miami frequently demands projects of this type and we are prepared to make CuentoManía a milestone of participation and promotion of literature in Spanish in the United States.
The main risk of the problem is that if it loses interest among the community and that if it does not have participants or an audience. To avoid this, our team has as a priority to do readings with the finalists and winners, throughout the year, in different areas of the city. Hopefully the community is so in need of this kind of activities, that for now we are confident that we will have CuentoManía for a long time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
