THE CORE GAME:
It has taken me more than a year to develop an immersive game that fits on a postcard. The solution was a game mechanic that I call Area Collection Powers; when you occupy 3 spaces of the same color, you gain control of that color system. Each system gives you a special power that you can use on future turns. You can use the Weapons System to attack 2 adjacent units, the Air Lock System to jettison 2 enemy units into the vacum of space, the Gravity System to tumble units around the base, and the Command System to negotiate disarmament.
ALIEN RACE EXPANSION:
In addition to these system powers, there are 24 units (tokens), each with one of 6 unique race powers. Each time you use a unit to invade a space, you trigger that unit's race power. Cyborgs hack into the systems, Parasites infect enemy units, Telepaths use mind control to attack adjacent units, Space Worms breach the hull to attack outer units, Humans negotiate disarmament, and Blobs copy the race powers of the units they attack.
HOW TO PLAY:
The goal is simple. You win by using up all of your units.
The rules are simple. On your turn, you can use a unit to invade an enemy space OR remove a unit from a system you control to use that system's power. You then check to see which systems (if any) you gained control of.
In parallel with designing the physical board game, we are developing a computer version of Space Base Mutiny. This has allowed us to run statistics on gameplay and design an AI that consistently kicks my butt!
We want to make a polished computer game, complete with cool animations, sound effects, and playable as a mobile app. For that, we need your help. Share this Kickstarter with friends and family, and together we’ll hit these stretch goals and create a free virtual game for us all to enjoy!
Since we hit the ultimate $10K stretch goal, we will hold a game design competition to find new games to release as punch-out postcards. If our design competition is successful, we will develop these games, and offer them through a new Kickstarter project in which you would receive a new postcard game every month! Each game would fit into the same small box, which you would receive with your first postcard.
Risks and challenges
This is my first Kickstarter, but I have dozens of game designer friends who have walked this path before. In addition, the art and design of the game are complete. I have worked out terms with DynamiCard, who will both manufacture and ship the game. As far as Kickstarter projects go, this one is pretty straightforward.
