Support FAIR pay for women. workers. artists.
Since the summer of 2015, I have been creating a dance film about women’s struggles to challenge the systems that oppress them. The film is called Woman Versus. To me, this dance film itself does not matter if I do not treat everyone involved in my project with the utmost fairness. So there's a little - well, huge - problem! I have not been able to properly pay the dancers that spent SIXTY TWO hard hours rehearsing and filming with me. As artists, students, and activists, we are often told our work does not deserve pay. We are made to rely on powerful people, people with money, and when they don't pay us, we accept it. It DOES NOT have to be this way. We can break that cycle if we rely on each other.
Let's break the cycle for this group of women. In those sixty two hours, these women sacrificed so much. They gave up their Sunday and Tuesday nights for three months. They literally smashed their bodies into the hard ground.
They hung out of speeding cars on the highway. They blocked traffic on a NYC bridge. Through sprained ankles and wrists, they all came through. And they came in smiling for 5am call times for two 12-hour days.
These dancers are waitresses, babysitters, carpenters, and hostesses all working day jobs and doggedly pursuing their passions on top of that. They are just like me and you, tirelessly hoping that they will work hard and one day people will see their value and pay them fairly for their work. They fully invested in my film and I MUST invest in them. I have just one month to raise about $4,500 to pay each of the dancers $9/hour for their work. $9/hour is the least I can do.
I hope you will give because you not only BELIEVE in fairness but would like to make fairness a reality for this hardworking group of women. How could I make a film illuminating systems that oppress women WITHOUT PAYING THE WOMEN working for me? I cannot. Help me... be fair.
Risks and challenges
The dance film has been filmed and is in the editing phase. Once we receive funds from supporters, the funds will be split among nine dancers and I will send checks to the dancers. Since the film is being completed, the only challenge will be ensuring the dancers involved are fairly compensated for their work!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
