The King's Lance is the first of 3 mobile touchscreen games focusing on character driven story and satisfying cross platform multiplayer. It boasts engaging narrated storytelling, satisfying jousting combat, and endless replay ability. We believe that games can be casual without being shallow, and social without being annoying.
By backing this project, you will be joining us on our quest to change the face of mobile gaming, and watch us as we create and evolve a new medieval fantasy universe to explore. You will be treated to weekly updates showing concept art, game design challenges and a peak into the lore. We are sickened and saddened by the proliferation of free garbage that plagues mobile marketplaces, each one created with less care and love for art and storytelling than the last. We aim to do our part to mature the market. While we are targeting the highest saturated platforms first, we would love to see this game ported to every possible touch screen device possible, so we have some specific stretch goals to fulfill this. In addition to being able to port the game to different platforms, each milestone increases the production value in a specific way. See the funding chart below for reference.
Do you enjoy character centered storytelling, in a grounded fantasy world? Then you should love the Pauldron series. You will be introduced to this universe through the eyes of a single knight. The king has been killed, and a long uneasy peace between dragons and men has been broken, yet these cunning serpents would not attack without reason. The player will follow the events that lead this nameless knight to uncover a plot against his kingdom, and stay the tide of conflict and a veiled warfare between kingdoms that has become known as the knight's tournament. You will be treated to beautiful paintings from some of the games industries finest artist, along with an e-book style narrative between each 'stage' of gameplay.
The entire narrative is a reading of a final letter written by this knight to his only son, just before he enters a battle that will likely claim his life. He retells his failures, his victories and the characters (along with their virtues and vices) which he meets along the way, knowing that these few important words may guide his child through what could be a difficult future.
Mobile gameplay has changed the way we look at games. With short play sessions and touch controls, the game play experience needs to be tight, satisfying and addictive. The way you control your knight in the joust is intuitive and simple, guiding your lance with your right hand and your shield with your left, and we want this to feel perfect. The goal, of course, is to defeat your opponent by breaking your lance on his armor or un-horsing him altogether. You will travel the realm challenging tough bosses, winning honor, respect and gold to purchase better equipment.
The multiplayer aspect of the game is a type of "turn based" combat played on any available platform against any other platform. You don't have to be connected at the same time to challenge someone to a joust. This 'play while you are away' system is not new to mobile gaming, but the way we are introducing incentive is. You have a chance to win gold from your opponent and if you can unhorse him... then you can win his armor! Additional events may also be added providing we get enough funds to make it happen.
Possible events in this first release
archery - a test of accuracy and precision
the hunt - kill the largest beast possible, and train birds of prey to assist you
Possible events in future releases (when/if we can go to 3D)
the duel - one on one battle, choose your weapon wisely
the melee - lead a team of knights to victory, strategy and cunning are key
The Pauldron games take place in a medieval fantasy universe inspired by the writings of Malory, Tolkien, Lewis, and other legendary fantasy authors. Although some aspects of this tale are derived from a familiar legend, you have never been told this story, and you have never seen this world. It is our goal to create a universe bound to much of the same rules as our own, grounded in reality, but with a fantasy flare. With that said, I have some pretty high standards for the type of talent I want to see on this project. The artists that have done (or will do) work to flesh out this universe are no strangers to the game industry, with some AAA titles under their belt like Halo, Guild Wars and much more.
How can we offer value to investing in a title that will only really cost a few dollars on mobile marketplaces? ...by offering some special in-game content and prizes only available to kick-starter backers!
Sport the green and white "Invictus" armor and show your kickstarter status to the world, display art in your home designed by game industry artists like Richard Anderson or Thomas Scholes, or impress your fantasy loving friends with an exclusive custom made "Sword of the King's Guard'.
Q: I am a video game journalist! Do you have a press page or website?
A: We are working on a website, in the meantime you can find a press page here.
Q: who made this presentation possible?
A: Richard Anderson (promo/cover art), Neal Hanson (armor concept art, character/environment concept art), Thomas Scholes (environment concept art), Chris McElroy (video production), Erich Hung-Che Lin (animation), Kenneth Macmillan (voice talent), Nation9 (use of studio, advice and development), Chip Nill (awesomeness), my three little knights and their beautiful queen (couldn't have done it without my family)... a few mentors and friends (you know who you are), and of course... yours truly -Luke Farinella
Q: Is your financial goal a realistic one?
A: Yes. Remember that we are not building a huge 3D MMORPGFPS (not that it's a bad idea) but instead we are providing simple, tight gameplay (essentially pong with lances) and investing more time and resources into storytelling and artistic quality. We think that the intro to this universe should be rich in these aspects. Also, don't forget the costs involved to create and ship the rewards.
Q: How far along are you in development?
A: While we have the documentation, artists, developers, writers, and voice talent lined up, not much can be done without funding. Unlike some other projects on this site, we are not halfway through, and just looking for a few dollars to push us over the hill. We are just starting, our pockets are empty and we can't make this game (the way it was meant to be) without you. And you can be a part and share the experience with us. We are using Unity game engine (and hopefully Edgar Muniz's Spriter) to reach as many platforms as possible.
Q: So you don't already have a publisher, or a hidden bag of gold?
A: Nope. I borrowed a little from my wife's house fund to produce the presentation you see here. (so please back this project or I may be sleeping on the couch in this future house) While some publishers have shown interest, they remain plan B. Artistic Independence is of extreme importance to this project.
Q: so about your targeted platforms...
A: Before you finish let me just say this. It is my goal to see a version of this game on every possible touch screen platform, but we need to target the highest saturated platforms first. (I personally own and love the wp7) ...and If we are talking pie in the sky goals, I would love to take this universe and these characters as far as a triple A title on Xbox/Playstation/PC/Nintendo etc... but if I were make a game on these platforms I would want to take full advantage of the capabilities of those platforms. So If you are backing this project you are actually kickstarting a new game universe that can be explored in future titles, genres and platforms. The mobile touch screen devices are a good entry point for an introduction to this universe as the standard (budgets, accessibility, production scope) is much lower. (where the competition is cartoon birds instead of the massive universe of skyrim)
Q: When will the game be released?
A: When it's finished. Which will most likely be fall or winter of this year.
Q: Shouldn't you be focusing more on making a bigger 'game' and not so much on 'story'?
A: I like the 'Robert Bowling' method of design. With a priority on the universe, and a platform agnostic world, it will allow us to make cooler stuff in the future. We are taking a look at how people like to use their mobile devices. Listening to music, reading e-books, playing a quick game.... these are all experiences we are trying to capture with this first title. Once we have a following, then we can introduce more 'hard-core' aspects in future games.
Q: What do you plan to show us in the development process.
A: Almost Everything. We plan to keep you in the know with weekly updates giving you a sneak peek into the Pauldron Universe as we develop it.
Q: Why do you call it the Pauldron Universe
A: The 'pauldron' is a piece of armor that covers your shoulder. In this world where the knight's are central characters it speaks to the knights allegiance. The main character, for instance, is a member of the King's Guard and proudly wears his realm's standard.
Q: What happens if you raise even more than what is on the chart?
A: Every penny earned will go toward making a better game, a better universe and more in depth characters.... not in someone's pocket. My highest motivation is making something awesome... not making a ton of money. If I had 50 million dollars in the bank right now, I would spend 50 million making a AAA title on the most advanced next-gen platforms, set in this same universe.... but I need to start somewhere.
Q: So this is the first of several games?
A: That is the plan, yes. (with some success) The other two titles (The Pauldron: and the Gauntlet, The Pauldron: and the Lost Sword) with advance the story, expand the world, and add features, events and characters to this first title.
Q: Could you tell us more about the rewards/ game/ story etc...
A: Sure! What would you like to hear about the most? I want to hear from the community. Comment here or send us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org
