The long-anticipated collaboration between soprano Phoebe Gildea and harper Noah Brenner is finally here! Join our project now to help create a magical holiday season later this year with our brand new Christmas album.
Music has always been an important part of celebration in our lives, and we want to put together an album that captures our experiences of Christmas and brings those feelings of "comfort and joy" to people everywhere.
We met tango dancing in 2008, and had no idea that we were both musicians.
After becoming friends by making puns about Pavlov, we had the "so what do you do?" conversation. From that moment on, we've been jokingly saying we should make an album together. Finally, last October, we were driving home from a performance in Astoria, and we decided it was time to go for it.
For this album, we've looked through traditional carols, holiday drinking songs, and childhood favorites to find music that fits together and feels good with our ensemble. We've created arrangements of the music for our unique combination of instruments and styles by looking for the familiar musical moments in each song that put Christmas in our ears, and building around them.
Who are we?
Our Goals and Your Contributions
We've been working on this music since January! (So basically we haven't gotten Christmas carols out of our heads since before last Thanksgiving.) Now we need you to make all the rest of it happen. A full length album requires so much more than the good music that's on it.
Here's what we've already done:
- Choosen, arranged, and rehearsed songs for the album
- Built a budget to account for all the upcoming expenses
- Reached out to professionals and set up preliminary schedules for recording, mastering, photography, graphic design, and performances once the album is out
- Had a professional photo shoot to launch our marketing, crowdfunding, and social media engagement
Here is what we still need to do (or hire people to do):
- Record the album
- Mix and Master
- Press the physical CDs
- Pay royalties for certain songs
- Album cover photo shoot
- Graphic design for the cover and jacket
$2,500 is our goal because that is the minimum we need to make it happen.
Here is how much making this album will cost us:
These numbers are all estimates based on conversations with the professionals with whom we have scheduled time this fall.
If we make it to $3,500, we can almost double the number of CDs that we order in our first batch! To thank you for helping us get to this level, everyone who has pledged at least $20 will get a ticket to our launch party. Those of you who already have a ticket in your reward package will get an extra one at no charge.
If we get $4,500, we can double the number of CDs again! We will be so thrilled with you all that we will make a video of us performing one of our songs, and put all of your names in the credits (yes, that includes ALL backers, at every funding level).
You are so important to making this happen! We wanted to do something special for people that help us get off the ground -- something extra that won't be available later to people who buy the album. And so: For just $1, you can download two singles that are not available on the CD!
If you give more than that, we are going to deck your halls with awesome Christmas gifts for everyone on your list. Look to the right for a sidebar filled with details of all the goodies we're offering! Don't forget to scroll all the way up and down to see the options.
You can pre-purchase our album as a CD or digital download, become an official album sponsor listed in the album jacket, get a sample of our non-musical skills in crochet and beading, and much more!
In the spirit of the season (or at least the season it will be by the time we have the album), we've put together the Ultimate Christmas Gift Special!
Three amazing contributors will be able to give someone a unique and special gift! We'll help you celebrate with personalized messages and special touches to all our rewards:
You will receive 2 signed CDs (one for you and one to gift); a custom beaded Christmas ornament spelling your gift-ee's name; a poster of the album cover autographed with the message of your choice; a song of your choice dedicated to your gift-ee from the Holiday Market stage (or over Skype); credit in the liner notes (can be listed as anonymous); and you and your gift-ee will be on the guest list for our launch party.
Join us for a Jolly July! More fun surprises to come!
(you may even find out what's up with the mouse following us around)
Special thanks to Bob Williams (photos) and Kyle Everett (video and audio recording).
Risks and challenges
Taking risks is something that we love to do when we are on stage, but not so much when it comes to financial planning and career choices. We've been doing our best to minimize risk from the beginning, both for ourselves and for our backers.
We already have a trustworthy team onboard to see this project through to the end, from recording the first song to mastering the album to designing the cover.
The largest obstacle between us and our album is the money to pay all those incredible people who are waiting to work with us over the next few months. With your help, once we blow our funding goal out of the water, that greatest challenge can be overcome this month! From there on, the work will be hard, but it is work that we love, and work that we know we do well.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
