Currently the demo is for Windows only. If this Kickstarter is successful, a Mac version of the demo will also be released. The game itself is a simple .exe file that plays without installation. When trying out the demo, please keep in mind that it is not 100% final and there will be much more to see and do in the release.
Hollow is an adventure/role-playing hybrid influenced by some of my favorite games such as Shadowrun, Fallout, and Shining Force. In this game you are a city detective who has accepted an assignment in the nearly abandoned rural town of Hollow, where some of the worst criminals have mysteriously escaped. It will be up to you and whoever will help to use whatever you have at your disposal to figure out what has happened. Guns, magic, computer hacking, investigation tools, surreal puzzles, and major decision making will factor into whether or not you will succeed.
Hollow will feature turn-based, free-roam combat with up to 3 vs 3 battles. You will control yourself and any allies you have with you, fully utilizing their strengths. Partners will also give you access to tools that you will want or even need in your investigation. Bringing a certain partner with you to an area can prove beneficial when you find out their investigation items uncover things you wouldn't normally see.
This is probably not what you would call an all-out Action RPG. It will be heavy in dialogue with many attribute, skill, and even gender checks that will sometimes result in drastically different consequences. Being able to successfully talk or bully your way through a situation will sometimes net you experience points, which you will use to upgrade your attributes and skills at anytime.
No matter where you spend your experience, you will be guaranteed to see feedback from the game. It could be from combat, dialogue options, computer hacking, utility uses, or any combination of these. The number of available attributes and skills you can upgrade has been carefully picked, and will encompass more than one area. Good with the Guns skill? This means you will be proficient in everything from a common peashooter to a Tommy gun. Put some points into hacking? Not only will you be able to break through electronic devices, but the whole world of cyberspace will be opened up to you.
By upgrading your Hacking skill, you will become knowledgeable about more useful computer programs and be able to use more of them at a time. You will fight and manipulate Intrusion Countermeasure Elements (ICE) to get past security measures, view secret files, or just make some extra cash.
Whether you are a gunslinger, spell caster, or technoholic, there are ways for you to progress in Hollow. If you haven't already noticed from the video, demo, or screenshots, this game is heavily influenced by the SNES and Genesis versions of Shadowrun. Many many moons ago, Hollow began life as a Genesis Shadowrun fan game, but has since broken off into its own domain with all-original graphics and mechanics.
Hollow is currently being developed with Game Maker 8.0. My $60 goal is so I can purchase the standard version of Game Maker: Studio and transfer it to that engine. This will allow for Mac and Windows 8 compatibility, as well as some fancy lighting effects and tricks I couldn't otherwise do. I'm also running this campaign in hopes of increasing awareness about the game and letting those who enjoy and believe in the game to get it cheaper than the planned release price.
Hi I'm Jarrett, the J in J2K. I'm responsible for design, writing, mechanics, art, music, and pretty much whatever my other half doesn't want to do! I've made a few freeware games in the past like Create Your Own Adventure, 2-Dimensional, and The Journey Home. Hollow is by far my most ambitious project and the one I've spent the most time and effort on, and I can only hope it shows.
Kim is the K in J2K and has done some fantastic artwork for Hollow. She has also been quite busy play testing and providing design advice. I can safely say this project would never have come this far without all of her hard work.
$60 - The game is fully developed and released on Windows & Mac.
$120 - More time and effort can be spent on soundtrack and ambient sound effects.
$140 - A wireframe side game will be added to cyberspace, as well as a pseudo-3D area!
$180 & Beyond - Extra funds will enable us to get external help with some graphics and design here and there so we can focus on producing more content.
Risks and challenges
We've put a significant amount of time into this project already, so I feel that any risks are minimal. I've already anticipated transferring it to Studio and have been very cautious about not using functions that aren't compatible with it.
As for challenges, releasing the game efficiently in a high-quality state while attending practical nursing school is enough for us, but Hollow has come a very long way and it will be finished. Of this I can assure you.
Most all of the game's mechanics have already been implemented and much of the story and dialogues have been written. All that's left to do is create the content and watch the story unfold.
