Is the Cooler Durable?

We'll put it this way.. We haven't found a way to break one yet.

What About Ice Retention?

Over the past three years we have tested our cooler in numerous different environments, from days out on fishing boats in the Georgia heat to weekends camping. Without fail we have consistently been able to get over 7 days ice retention and even 8 days depending how many times the cooler was opened.

Why the Detachable Lid?

We've all been there.. The adventure is over and it is time to pour out the melted ice in your cooler. The problem being, whenever we tried to empty a cooler with a fixed lid it usually looked something like this:

Fortunately for our backers, when they go to empty out our cooler it will look more like this:

With years of camping under our belts, one thing we found was that when we prepared food outdoors, there was usually no good place to cut up our ingredients. However when going on trips with our cooler, we found that the lid provided a perfectly clean surface for us to prepare our meals on. The durable coating protects the lid and provides a flat surface that is easy to wash off.

We even found we could knee board on the lid... Because why not?!

How Much Can the Cooler Hold?

After playing around with some dimensions and slightly rounding off the interior edges, we were able to get this cooler to hold around 64 cans along with ample ice.

Our US Manufacturing Facility:

Our partners mold our coolers in high density, extremely durable foam and apply our protective spray finish, all under the same roof. We have spent over a year running through trial production runs in order to find the most efficient way to manufacture these coolers. Now all that is left is our first full production run!

The Development Process:

Stage 1

Two years ago, armed with a name and an embarrassing logo, we began prototyping, making calls, pitching our ideas, and uncovering more questions than answers. Our first prototype was a perfect proof of concept.  By testing several different combinations of insulators and coatings we found the perfect combination, which resulted in a 7 day ice retention in 90-degree heat.

Stage 2:

Eventually, we found our way to a website for a silicon-valley based consultancy that promised market research, product development, and sourcing manufacturing partners.

Long story short, after working with them for over six months, were down to our last dollar. We were in the middle of finals when the CEO of this Silicon Valley consultancy called us.  It was a courtesy call to let us know that their company was going out of business and our product was too expensive to manufacture in the US and too heavy to ship from overseas (so they claimed).

We managed to regroup and insisted on getting all of the research they had done for us, and send us a list of all the manufacturing partners they had researched or contacted.

Minds racing, we had already decided that we were going to personally call every manufacturing partner they had researched in order to figure out a solution.

This is where we found Dan Walker. Buried in that list of manufacturers, was a reputable manufacturing plant located in the Midwest.  After our first phone call with Walker, we knew we were onto something.  With a measured approach, a close inspection of our ideas and current prototypes, Walker agreed to begin working with us to finish the product development.

Stage 3

We were able to source a few products in line with our Outdoor Outfitter brand and began driving sales as we built out an e-commerce platform and social media presence.  After several months of fighting an uphill battle we made enough money to move forward again with developing our cooler.

We instantly started making progress with Walker, exploring innovative tooling and a simplified design that focused solely on reduced weight, superior cooling, and durability.  He even helped us optimize beer storage!

CAD File Final Design
CAD File Final Design

After several months we decided on a design to start prototyping with. The final design was simple, yet effective.

Final Stage Of Harness System

After a few weeks of creative thought we came up with the final innovation. We finished designing a harness that allows you to strap the lid down, anchors the rope handles, and gives the ability to hook on attachments (like bottle openers).

Harness System

The harness will be made out of machine-stretched, high-quality rubber, and it will buckle in the front.

After sourcing a manufacturer for the harness, completing the CAD file, and spending countless hours at a sewing machine we had a final proven design.

The only thing left to do was test it for ice retention.  So, we decided to locked it in a car for 7 days in the Georgia heat.  After 7 days it still contained ice, so we put it outside for another day.  Resulting in a proven 8 day ice retention in intense summer heat.

Our cooler was becoming a reality.  We had an eye towards crowdfunding, a production team developing marketing collateral, and brand ambassadors across the United States.

Finally, over 3 years after our initial idea, we had a finished, battle-tested product, and an American-based manufacturing partner ready to hit the ground running.

This cooler is a no-nonsense, American-engineered, Midwestern-manufacturing marvel for outdoors men and women as well as anybody else who despises lugging around a heavy cooler that costs an arm and a leg.  This cooler won’t wear out.  And it won’t wear out your wallet.  And it won’t wear you out either because it’s only 1/3rd the weight!

Back our campaign and bring on the Rugged Road!

The Backstory:

After witnessing a demonstration of a spray coating (developed for the Pentagon to make cement barriers blast resistant), Henry Collins, co-founder of Rugged Road Outdoors, realized its potential to change the cooler industry and reached out to co-founder Spencer Sutlive.

In 2016, Collins and Sutlive decided to start a company in their pursuit of this revolutionary idea.  Over two years later, while still in college, they emerged having successfully invented an entirely new method for manufacturing coolers.

Collins and Sutlive supported their R&D by selling basic sportsman apparel, putting them in a position to shake up an entire industry.

"Our Cooler has comparable cooling and durability ratings to its pricey, roto-molded peers," says Collins. "It checks in at an astonishing 1/3rd of the weight."

This breakthrough in cooling technology should be music to the ears of everyone from soccer moms and casual campers to serious outdoorsmen and women everywhere.

Sometimes, all it takes to get people outdoors is a revolutionary product.  Collins and Sutlive stayed the course with grit and have created just that.

And it retails for less than a concert ticket.

About the Founders

Henry was an energetic kid who turned into a capable outdoors man with a penchant for numbers. He balances his prowess with a bow or a fly rod with his spreadsheet savvy. Henry is equally comfortable knee deep in a duck blind or analyzing data.

True story:  Henry's first entrepreneurial effort was a subscription email newsletter aimed at teaching high school students how to trade stocks.

Spencer is the youngest of 4 boys, and he took to the outdoors immediately.  Whether jet skiing the Chattahoochee River from Georgia to Florida or scaling cliffs in the Appalachian mountains just to camp on a cliff in the freezing cold, Spencer is always looking for the best gear and the next adventure.

True story:  Spencer found himself waking up as early as 4 am many mornings throughout high school, to fulfill orders for the short-lived, 6-figure t-shirt business he and his older brothers co-founded.

Risks and challenges

Over the past year, our team and manufacturing partner have been working out logistics in preparation for this campaign. While our final design may have slightly changed a few months ago, the delivery and manufacturing process have stayed the same. However, there are always inherent risks during the manufacturing process that can be out of our control, particularly if we were massively over funded and were producing thousands of extra units. If this were to occur, we would strive to keep our backers in the loop by sending thorough weekly updates until delivery. We have studied countless other campaigns in order to assess their strengths and weaknesses. We believe if communication is transparent and frequent, then our backers will have nothing to worry about.
Thank you for your support, and we are glad you are joining us on this journey!
