It’s not a secret anymore; sitting is bad for you! In fact, it's really bad for you, it's actually so bad sitting has been named the “The New Smoking”. The awareness of the "sitting disease" has increased over the past years, but the cure has been mainly mechanical, expensive and ugly - until now, that is!
Drawing inspiration from Scandinavian design, the Freedesk is just as simple to use as it is beautiful to look at. The simplistic design along with the color options makes the desk adaptable to all settings and situations. The Freedesk is light enough (5.5 kg / 12 lbs.) for you to freely move it around the workplace or at home, but still firm enough to make it stable. Furthermore, the legs are equipped with rubber (transparent) pads which protects the surface beneath the Freedesk as well as preventing it from sliding.
The Freedesk has been designed to match people’s preferences. Its height is adjustable to 9 different levels and we have tested it extensively for well above 30 kg / 66 lbs. However, as safety is of great importance to us, our recommended maximum weight is set to 15 kg / 33 lbs. that means you can choose to use it with a really hefty laptop, a very big monitor AND a large cup of coffee, without having to worry about the desk's stability.
Using the Freedesk is extremely simple. To lift it up, simply grab each side of the table top, lift it straight up, and lock it to your desired height. To lower the desk again, release the table top from its locked position by lifting it with your right hand (yes, it works for left-handers as well, just spin the table around!) and lower it.

Putting the Freedesk to the test
For market research and field testing we have shipped a number of Freedesks to a lucky few around Sweden. The feedback has been overwhelming so far! By doing these surveys we have confirmed people have—for a long time—been looking for simple, affordable and elegant products that help them to stand up. In terms of functionality and handling, our surveys concluded the product is easy to use and extremely mobile, and most people prefer to use the Freedesk both at home and at the workplace. So far we haven’t encountered any design flaws, reaffirming the belief -Freedesk, in its current state, is ready for mass production.
A more active life is something many of us strive for. The Freedesk has been designed to meet different people’s preferences, and by offering it in eight different colors (Blue, Green, Red, Yellow, Burgundy, Gray, Black and White), we hope to make it easier for you to match the Freedesk with your preferences and taste. The Freedesk has its place in the workplace, at your ordinary computer desk, in the conference room or down at the local coffee shop. And also in your home where the hours sitting down, in front of the TV, computer or iPad, can make you loose your edge.
The Freedesk isn’t just restricted to workplaces and homes, it also finds its place at schools. Studies from the UK have shown that children in classrooms with standing desks are more likely to feel happy and more productive during their time in school. The pupils are also more creative and benefit from a greater sense of well-being.
Healthier, happier and more productive
The results of studies and research conducted over the last few years are striking; sitting down is really bad for you—some even compare it to smoking. However, if it's difficult to give up the cigarettes—standing up, at home and at your workplace, should be easy and available. Just by standing 2 hours every workday one can—drastically—reduce the risk of heart attacks, cancer, or diabetes* In addition standing up boosts your well-being by:
- Helping you feel more energetic, vigorous and active.
- Burning more calories. (750 kcal. per work week**)
- Increasing productivity, up to 10%.***
Why We Need Your Help!
So far development and production has been delegated to one of the team members’ small but efficient, joinery. Located in the south part of Sweden, we have—for the last year—worked with the Freedesk prototype to find the best mix of elegant design, mobility, quality and price. The Freedesk has now reached a stage where it combines all of those features and we are ready for mass production. We already have an agreement in place with a European company—they can start the production as soon as we can make an order of 100 Freedesks, and with an order of that size we will be able to realize our ambition of making Freedesk available to end-customers at 189 USD.
Our entire team has been brought up in Sweden; one cannot be surprised that our Kickstarter project is a light weight, practical, affordable piece of furniture. However, there is more to it than meets the eye. The team members all come from different backgrounds—together encapsulating a broad range of experiences and competences. We have worked with the Freedesk for the last year, testing multiple solutions, materials and designs. We have also been engaging people in our surrounding environment for their input and feedback. We have invested both time and money in to the project, and are confident that Freedesk is a product that will help people to live a healthier life!
Risks and challenges
During the last 3 months we have really put the Freedesk to the test, shipping it to members of our test group, all located in different parts of Sweden. So far the Freedesk has put up very well against everyday usages, both at home and in a work environment. The Freedesk has a patent pending and the design is protected.
Many of the team members have worked internationally and we all have experiences of building sustainable companies. As already mentioned we have an agreement with a state of the art facility in Europe, that can produce Freedesks at large volume. Furthermore, we don’t just have an agreement with the factory - we have had the first small batch delivered, and the result has been great.
The biggest risk - at the moment - is if the number of backers drastically exceed our expectation, this might have the consequence of the shipping date being postponed. We are confident in our capability to deliver a great product with great quality. The only risk backing this project, is if it’s extremely successful, you might have to wait for the second batch of Freedesks.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
