Yuri Nation is an action adventure game for PC, Mac & Linux where you play as Yuri, a dog who must pee on things to grow his territory.
Yuri Nation is an action adventure game where you play as Yuri, an out-of-work dog who must prove himself by avoiding hazards while claiming territory. Although this is a unique title, you will notice inspiration from classic games such as Paperboy, Grand Theft Auto, and Mario Kart. Growing territory in Yuri Nation will take a certain amount of quick reflexes, strategy, a full bladder, and a sense of humor. You will need to carefully plan your route as you dodge cars and evade dog catchers while marking your territory before the clock runs out or your enemies claim it all. You will earn bones along the way to spend on critical equipment for future missions. Equipment as simple as flea medication or as complex as an Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) generator might be equally critical to the mission.
Why is Yuri Doing All This?
We believe it is important that players get behind the character and we are accomplishing this by including a compelling and entertaining backstory. Yuri is not your average dog, he was actually the last pick of the litter and was recruited by government men to be a cosmonaut. After years of training and days before his first moon mission, Yuri was replaced by a robot dog model K9-2000 and asked to retire early. He took his severance package and bought a house in Toonville. Now he must defend and grow his territory by peeing on things to prove he can out do K9-2000. With your help maybe someday he can make it to the moon and claim the ultimate territory.
Why Should Serotonin Studios Build This Game?
Short answer is, we already have. We have spent a ton of time building a powerful demo. We have tested it on multiple devices and are in the final push to bring it to the fans. But a demo is only part of the way. We need to finish building out the world of Yuri Nation. That includes finished artwork (the artwork in the video is a placeholder), more levels, characters, equipment, music, and voice acting. We have a plan on the direction we are going but we would also like to hear from the fans about what they would like to see in this game. We hope to include some characters and levels inspired by you.
Ouya Support at $75,000
Stretch Goal Reward: If we reach this stretch goal all backers at the $25 reward level and above will receive a bonus copy of Yuri Nation for their Ouya home console system. The timeline of this reward is dependent on Ouya delivering their platform.
Multiplayer at $150,000
We’re excited about the prospect of bringing multiplayer mayhem to the Yuri Nation Universe. We currently have game designs for two different game modes briefly outlined below and are sketching out two more game modes that we hope to present as our kickstarter campaign progresses. As usual, we want to hear from our backers about what multiplayer modes they are most looking forward to playing. Have a great idea we haven’t presented yet? Lets us know in the comments section!
Race Mode: Taking a cue from that classic race title Mario Kart you will race Yuri against 4 to 8 other opponents in a mad dash to the finish. As you make your way through the course you will be required to claim territory markers along the way. Some courses will be very linear directing you where to go while other courses will be much more open allowing you to plan your own route as you race to mark all the territory markers. Pick your power-ups wisely to boost your own stats or stop your opponents in their tracks.
Last Dog Standing: Play against 4 to 8 other opponents in a wild romp to control the most territory. One minute is put on the clock for each player (4 to 8 minutes total) and the countdown begins. Every minute, the player with the least points (i.e., least territory marked) is eliminated from the match. The fun doesn’t stop there though because eliminated players are then given the option to spawn back into the ongoing match as another character such as the Squirrel, Rabbit, or Skunk where their sole goal is to distract the still competing players and cause as much havoc as possible.
Stretch Goal Reward: If we reach this stretch, goal ALL backers will receive a special Yuri Nation backer badge you can proudly display next to your online handle. Backers at the $25 reward level and above will receive a special backer only in-game taunt animation they can use to rub their victories in their opponents’ snouts. Backers at the $50 reward level and above will receive a special multiplayer robot dog character they can use to intimidate their friends.
Will you support my distribution of Linux?
Yuri Nation is built on the Unity3D game engine which allows us to publish to Linux desktops with minimal additional work. However, this feature is new to Unity3D and not all Linux distributions are supported. Currently, the only officially supported Linux distribution will be 32 or 64 bit Ubuntu Linux version 10.10 or higher. Users of other distributions have been able to run games built on Unity3D but we will not be able to offer guarantees that non-official distributions will work.
If you’re looking for more information regarding Unity3D Linux support please see this official Unity3D post regarding the issue.
Are you planning on releasing a mobile version of Yuri Nation?
The mobile version of the game is very different from the desktop version due to platform and input limitations. We have not settled on a development timeline for mobile platforms, but we have built prototypes for iOS and Android. Both platforms had great performance on the many devices we tested. We have also solicited feedback from random coffee shop patrons and have found a good balance of touch controls. Rest assured though that when a mobile version of Yuri Nation is released, all backers will receive a free copy as a final thank you from Serotonin Studios.
Will Yuri Nation be available on Steam?
We are also attempting to get distribution through Steam Greenlight. Distribution is dependent on fans like you voting for us. Please visit Steam Greenlight and vote for us because the outcome is in your hands.
Thanks for your support,
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
If we reach our funding goals we are going to complete the project. We are far enough along to be confident in this. Like many software development projects, the main risk is if we misjudged our development time we might have a delayed release. We will do everything in our power to stay on schedule but if we are delayed we will keep our backers informed.
In order to avoid building things such as physics and focus on the gameplay, story, and artwork, we are using the Unity3D game engine. This reduces the risk that we will run into unforeseen game engine limitations.
As with any software development, bugs will happen. We hope with your help at both alpha and beta stages we can catch all the significant ones and make this game the best it can be.
