FUNDED: Thank you backers!

Glittering treasures surround the slumbering dragon. The adventurers sneak into its cavern, each hoping to plunder the most valuable items. Creep around the dragon, collecting treasure sets; steal from other players at sword-point; remember the best caches; and when you feel you're ahead, try to rouse the dragon to end the round.

Hoard features a dynamic board, a custom die, a dragon who wakes in three stages from tail to head, and artwork by Weta Digital artists. Players assume one of six identities such as fearless young Esmeralda (below) or the battle-scarred and gout-ridden Captain Hogarth (further down), desperate to stash away enough of the hoard to earn himself a comfortable dotage.

You receive 5 cards as your starting hand. Select a character, peek at any one of the 12 face-down cards surrounding the sleeping dragon, then place your character on that card. The object?  Collect and secure sets of matching treasures; try to end the round when you are in the lead

There are five kinds of treasure.
There are five kinds of treasure.

In addition to the treasure cards, there are three treasure chests, which are used as wild cards to round out a set; dragon action cards to stir or settle the dragon; and swords and shields for attack and protection from attack. There are four actions possible each turn.

Much of the time, you will roll the custom die to travel around the board to get a new card. If you roll a number between 1-5, you can go clockwise or counter-clockwise that number of spaces. Roll the special symbol and you can stay in place or reach any other location bar one. If you can remember the location of cards you want, try to return to those places.

You can take or reject the card you land on (it may not be a type of treasure you're trying to collect). If you take it, replenish the empty spot with a card from your hand or drawn from the deck. When you replenish from the deck, you get to peek at the replacement card.

All options are available with this hand 1) roll & move to get another card, 2) secure a set of goblets to score 3 points, 3) attack an opponent with the sword, or 4) use the Dragon Action card to stir or soothe the dragon (flip one of its cards)

Remember to keep one beady eye on your opponents. If someone has one or two cards left in hand, you may be on borrowed time. Do you risk grabbing just one more emerald or should you secure the set of four you've already collected? Or maybe it's time to stir the dragon and add some more tension. Or use a sword to steal something useful from an opponent before it's too late.

The round ends immediately if the dragon fully wakes, if the last card is drawn from the deck, or if a player starts their turn with no cards in hand. Treasures left in players' hands when the round ends count as negative points.

Hoard will come in a sturdy magnetic-closure box with black cardboard tray and gold foil accents plus:

*Interactives are the sword, shield, crown, sceptre, cloak, and Dragon Action cards. Cards to measure 63 x 88 mm

We hope Hoard is on its way to becoming an enduring family favorite and that we may reprint down the line. However, it's unlikely we'd be able to afford some of the stretch goal special features if/when we reprint. So the Kickstarter print run is likely to be as deluxe as it ever gets!

Surprise Stretch! If by June 30th (the day before we intend to submit Hoard's files to the manufacturer) we have a combined follower count of 750 on the Cheeky Parrot Games Facebook page, the Cheeky Twitter account, and the Tim Kings-Lynne Artwork Facebook page, your copy of Hoard will contain a special surprise.

We hope you may be pleasantly surprised at how reasonable the price is for a game in your currency. Here are the pledge levels for one or two copies converted to different currencies, exclusive and inclusive of shipping, as of June 16:

Exchange rates have been very stable the last few weeks.
Exchange rates have been very stable the last few weeks.

* Our $16,000 NZD target equates to $11,360 US or 10,080 Euros

Note: if you are in Singapore, India, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Austria, Bulgaria or Slovakia, you can pay the same shipping price as Japan.

Cheeky Parrot Games in Auckland will receive a shipment to be used to fulfil Kiwi and Australian pledges and orders from our Kiwi retailers. We plan to use Send from China to fulfil pledges outside Australasia. The replacement value of one copy of Hoard should be too low to trigger European VAT taxes. (Send from China can forward games to a depot in Europe for fulfillments from there, however fulfilling this way is significantly more expensive for us, so please contact us if you think your country is problematic.)

Shipping costs for one copy have been differentially priced to help us get an advance indication of where our pledgers are located. That way we can start planning for distribution even before the campaign closes.

Cheeky Parrot Games is ready to fly. We have three titles selling reliably at over 60 outlets throughout New Zealand. We have demonstrated good instincts about what makes a game appealing. For example, Julia discovered Granny Wars when it was a theme-less abstract number game and worked with designer Brad Thompson to turn it into a product that has sold 1000 copies in its first two years on the Kiwi market. We've also learned some hard lessons about manufacture, component design, and retail realities. We think Hoard is our best game yet and Kickstarting it gives it a chance to succeed on the global stage.

Meeting our target means we will be able to order a print run of at least 2000 copies, taking advantage of some economy of scale. After all backers receive their games, we expect to make additional copies available through retailers. In addition to New Zealand, we expect to be able to have games warehoused in the United States. For Julia, this will be a poignant achievement, as she is an American who has lived in New Zealand since 2000, and she'd love to have one of her games more readily available on the North American market.

Cheeky Parrot has always had high standards for our products. The base game we can offer if we reach our target will have several deluxe features such as a sturdy one-piece magnetic closure box, a custom die, and unique character pawns. Reaching our stretch goals will mean we can offer upgrades to some components, extra material to allow 5 and 6 people to play, and more. All copies of the game will include any stretches we reach. As Kiwis love to say, that is 'fair enough'.

Risks and challenges

We are confident of completing this project on time and within budget.

Project coordinator Julia Schiller has been involved in the design, publication, and distribution of six new games in her role as co-director of SchilMil Games (2011-2014) and as director of Cheeky Parrot Games (2014-present). Three of these were the subjects of successful crowd-funding campaigns. Cheeky Parrot currently has three titles in circulation. Hoard will be the only new project we publish in 2016.

Hoard was originally designed by Weta Digital artists Tim Kings-Lynne and his partner, Beck Veitch. They self-published a small print run that sold out fast--the gorgeous box cover art no doubt had much to do with that--but not before the last copy magically found its way into Julia's hands. She immediately began tweaking the gameplay, while preserving Hoard's unique qualities, such as the dynamic board made from face-down cards and the possibility of the dragon fully waking to abruptly end the game.

Julia, Tim, and Beck began collaborating in September 2015 to prepare Hoard for a larger print run and wider distribution under the Cheeky Parrot label. All has gone smoothly to date, with Tim and Beck, based in Wellington, responsible for all graphical elements and Julia in Auckland putting the game through rigorous play-testing, at events like Board Games by the Bay as well as regular gaming groups, designer meet-ups, and dedicated sessions. To date, the new and improved Hoard has been played hundreds of times.

We will initiate the production order by July 1st at the latest, so games should arrive at the pre-arranged distribution points by October for fulfilment before Christmas. Artwork and component layouts are nearly complete, and we've already had the tooling for the custom die done.

Whatz Shanghai will be our manufacturer, and Julia has worked with them on four other occasions. Each time, their work has been impeccable and the product ready on schedule. If you've played King of Tokyo, you're familiar with the high production value of Whatz products.

Most of the shipping will be arranged by Blondi, an Auckland company that has worked with Cheeky Parrot Games since the latter's inception.

We will regularly communicate our progress and any unforeseen obstacles we encounter. Because the exchange rate is unpredictable, we have done our calculations using an unfavourable figure and included an overall safety margin of 10%.
