When are you most alive? Life is how we love, feel, experience, do, be. It is about sharing, feeling, growing, moving, achieving, and being. I believe sport activities are a vibrant and universal celebration; an exploration, and experience of being alive. Sports are played and followed by every culture around the world and take various forms. For some this can be a hike, for others it can be sharing a moment with your community while watching the World Cup. Athletic contests have the unique capacity to transcend boundaries and cultural differences. They are an expression of a zest for life, a means of camaraderie, a way to erode differences. They have the potential to bring people together. Sports are a source of pride and a great teacher of motivation. They are an intense expression of the desire to be the best, and at the same time, illuminate humanity’s drive to help somebody else be the best they can be. I think these ideals are worth celebrating.
This project, Sports - A Celebration of Life, seeks to honor and celebrate this vibrant expression of life with 30 original works of art, each depicting one of the most popular sport activities from around the world. The artwork itself is intended to be bright, bold, colorful, vibrant, and celebratory. 30 sports were chosen to be a worldwide and inclusive representation, while still giving the project a manageable scope. The complete list of sports can be reviewed at http://www.randalljhenrie.com/sports
Hi, I am Randall J. Henrie, the creative energy behind this endeavor. I have been active all my life. Currently I am a road cyclist and lift weights almost daily. I am working my way back to archery. I am also a personal trainer and formerly owned a gym. I love the feeling of being alive when playing. As an artist and architect, I love the process of taking ideas and making them tangible. This project is bringing those two worlds together. In some way, I feel as if I have been marching these paths for a very long time now, and slowly bringing them together. Much of my work is colorful, bold, and vivid; I believe it is an awesome match for this art series. I also have the unique combination of visionary and technical skills to make this project possible. Three works are very near completion, those three can be viewed on this page and at my website. If this project is successfully funded, work on this project will be my primary focus during the Fall of 2012 and Winter & Spring of 2013.
As a backer for this project you will be rewarded with the art itself, as a token of my thanks and reminder of your participation, and reminder that life is meant to be lived. Your encouragement and networking support is also much appreciated. Look below for a Pledge Overview.
The 30 chosen sports and categories can be reviewed on my website and right here: Association Football / Soccer – Cricket - Field Hockey – Tennis – Volleyball - Table Tennis / Ping-Pong – Baseball – Golf – Basketball - American Football – Rugby – Bicycling – Motorsports – Aquatics – Skiing - Track & Field – Rodeo – Equestrian - Winter Olympics - Summer Olympics – Shooting – Boating – Boxing / Combat - Martial Arts – Badminton - Ice Hockey – Gymnastics – Extreme / Adventure – Archery - Bowling
My hope is that this project will in some way bring the world of sports and the world of art together. It would be nice, but this project will likely not accomplish world peace or end world hunger. But, I do think it can serve in some way to remind us all that there is a lot of good life happening that is worthy of celebrating. I think of it as the antidote to negative news.
If you are passionate about the joy of being alive and believe in this universal expression of life, please join me and help to make this celebration possible. Your encouragement and enthusiasm will help keep me moving forward. Help spread the word and the reminder that there is simple joy in just being alive. Please post on the Facebook Page

Risks and challenges
The primary challenge during the creation phase of this project will be meeting the deadline and keeping a tight focus on each and every artwork. If fundraising is successful, I will have 5 months to complete 30 images (3 are nearing completion), as well as creating the Pledge packages; calendars, notebooks, different size prints, flash drives, etc. This is adequate real-world time without much wiggle room. However, as with all creative projects, unforeseen challenges will arise. The dynamics involved with each different sport will likely require a slightly different analytical study and creative response. Some sport paintings will likely come together quite naturally and quickly, others could be very difficult with complex geometries and effective depiction of multiple ideas, the “Olympics” images for instance. Also, life happens and bills need to be paid. A hundred issues occur daily in each of our lives, I am no exception and will have a challenge making sure each painting receives the attention it deserves. My almost 20 years as a multi-tasking architect will serve well in this capacity, I am adept at switching from project to project and switching from analytical to creative at a moment’s notice, keeping several pots boiling while continually keeping an eye on the big picture.
The fulfillment phase of the project will come down to making sure every Pledge receives what I am committing to. With 30 paintings and 30 pledge levels, this amounts to what must be a very clear fulfillment and managerial system. I am very good at seeing the full scope and devising the process and detail that makes it work. I estimate this phase of the project to take two very busy months.
The biggest risk of this project comes down to economics. Is there enough money to meet the pledge requirements and sustain life? I estimate the total time for this project at 7 months. 5 months for creation and 2 months for fulfillment. I have done my best to estimate actual service fees, printing, shipping, federal and state taxes, hidden costs and time required to meet each Pledge level for this project. The fundraising goal reflects this hard-cost amount plus proceeds for a portion of my time and living expenses for 7 months. If this project is not successfully funded, the timeline will likely shift from 7 months too many years, as my energy will need to be shifted into other areas of life.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
