Civilisation has retreated, leaving once hospitable areas as barren wastelands.
Yet in this treacherous landscape, hope is found in an old carnival polar bear, now abandoned by her masters, and a mysteriously gifted young child who she has sworn to protect. This fateful partnership provides the old bear with a new purpose and sets them both off on a perilous journey. They must evade a ruthless clan of hunters who have their own intentions for the boy, all while surviving the unrelenting natural elements.
As the bear and child form an unbreakable friendship, the boy's true significance is gradually revealed, leaving the duo with only one option to guarantee survival: making the journey to pass the cold horizon.
Cold Horizon is an epic, post-apocalyptic tale of survival and a friendship between two characters who embark on an unforgettable journey.
Meet our heroes:
Eira - A graceful polar bear. Once the main attraction of a beloved family carnival, now old, abandoned and left to rot in a cage, Eira finds a new purpose in life when she meets a mysteriously gifted young boy. Helping him in his hour of need, she swears to protect him and the two form a unlikely friendship in these difficult times.
The Boy - An innocent, yet mysterious child. Worried by the unnatural glow in his eyes and unexplained phenomena that surrounds him, the boy's parents hide him away from a civilisation in crisis. But when word spreads about the boy's capabilities, his parents are left with no choice but to entrust his safety to an unlikely protector in an audacious bid for survival.
Cold Horizon is primarily a narrative driven experience and our journey spans five different acts, each one taking place during a different season of the year. We believe our episodes are crammed with so much content that each one will feel like an entirely different game as there will be new gameplay mechanics, fresh graphics, sounds, music and story. However, there will be a continuity throughout which will ensure everything ties together into the overall narrative.
We believe that an episodic model opens up Cold Horizon to an even larger audience. We can offer a cheaper price point, get the game to audiences faster, and create content that fits into people's own personal circumstances, offering multiple ways for them to engage with the product.
We want to share our vision for Cold Horizon with as many people as possible and we believe an episodic gameplay model is the most effective way to achieve that.
Beautiful hand-drawn visuals, presented in a unique style that takes inspiration from Scandinavian folk art.
Cold Horizon will have a painterly look, evoking watercolours and brush strokes throughout its story of humanity and survival. Beasts will retain a heavier watercolour look to emphasise the separation between man and animal.
At certain points in the game, the player will have to scavenge food and water supplies to slow the character's fatigue in a harsh post-apocalyptic environment.
While the boy's abilities help the polar bear adjust to the changing of seasons, enabling it to survive in various climates, both still rely on nourishment from their surroundings. It will be up to you to find appropriate supplies for a ravenous polar bear and a growing infant, whether you're collecting fruit from a tree, drinking water from a spring or trading supplies with those who have other needs.
As the story progresses, both boy and bear will acquire new skills and items, such as Eira's ability to throw objects at enemies, like barrels, and the boy's special gift which allows him to manipulate the environment, such as moving certain objects around the level and creating new platforms that allow both him and Eira to progress. As the story evolves and their friendship grows, so do the abilities of Eira and the boy.
For example, in winter environments, the boy will be able to melt icy obstacles to discover new areas in the level and make icicles fall to trap approaching enemies. In the jungle environment, the boy will be able to use his gift to grow tree branches in order to create a bridge to otherwise unreachable parts of the level. Platforms, in this way, can be used to solve puzzles and find hidden items that will reward the player at the end of the game, adding incredible replay value.
Enemies will take on many forms in Cold Horizon. Ranging from hunters to other hostile animals, each has their own set of skills that will maintain the difficulty in-game. Enemies will also be ranked by their intellect and behaviour. For example, early in-game enemies will be psychopathic, attacking you as soon as they see you. But in later episodes, enemies will grow smarter; attacking from a distance, even sneaking up on you and using the environment to their advantage.
They are grouped after their masters (the big boss you will face at the end of each episode).
Check out some early concept art on our in-game hunters.
In order from left to right: Ranger, Trapper, Scout, Marksman, Berserker
Cold Horizon is set over the course of a year and spans five individual episodes, each one taking place during a different season. Each season brings about changes to the environment, as well as changes to the boy's abilities. As the setting is post-apocalyptic, each environment will portray a feeling of emptiness and abandonment which Eira and the boy must survive. These environments include:
- Winter Village
- Dried Ocean
- Jungle and Swamp
Drawing from a range of stylistic and cultural influences, the soundtrack for Cold Horizon will be inherently cinematic, which will set out the epic scope of this adventure. Varying ambient textures of music and sound design will take you on a journey through ever-changing landscapes and seasons, while each character will have musical motifs that follow them and evolve as the story develops. Ethnic instruments, such as Balinese Gamelan and the Armenian Duduk flute will evoke the exotic and mystical elements of the plot, while haunting Nordic vocals speak to the deeply human nature of the story.
For fast-paced action, the soundtrack will be a percussive, orchestral-electronic style (à la Metal Gear Solid 2) while quieter intimate moments will be accompanied by soft piano themes, promising an incredible aural experience like no other.
Listen to some of the amazing soundscapes that have already been created for Cold Horizon:
At launch, Cold Horizon will be available in English. We will also be releasing the game in Arabic, Norwegian and looking to translate into French and Spanish. Our goal is to translate the game into as many languages as we possibly can.
Who are Big Cake Games?
Big Cake Games originated from a team of passionate gamers who came together to produce the proposed remake of the original Metal Gear (MSX). Working alongside industry professionals from Ubisoft, Konami, Insane Games and Sony's XDEV team, the project gained incredible support from the Metal Gear fan base, Konami and even Solid Snake himself, David Hayter. Whilst the development of the project had to be halted due to issues regarding copyright, Konami UK were incredibly supportive, giving us advice as well as a unique insight into the industry.
Learning from this experience, the team decided to keep going and instead create their own original IP, Cold Horizon.
The idea for Cold Horizon came from a concept drawn by Producer/Lead Artist Sheraz Ali, which rapidly developed and took on a life of its own. With the story beginning to form, the team started to think about how the game could stand out from others in this genre. Unlike a traditional co-op game, Ali wanted to render one character totally helpless, supporting the narrative with a heavy emphasis on teamwork and survival. Providing a cinematic feel in a 2D world, a unique and beautiful art style and an epic soundtrack combined with a moving story, Cold Horizon promises to be an unforgettable gaming experience.
Sheraz Ali - A concept artist and animator who has been drawing his entire life. His inspiration came early on, in the form of the animated TV show Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the video game series Metal Gear Solid. It was the making of Metal Gear Solid 2 documentary that defined Sheraz's artistic style, taking inspiration from Yoji Shinkawa's brush pen technique. Other notable influences include; Kim-Jung Gi, Mike Butkus, David Finch and Patrick Brown.
Sheraz went on to study 3D design, animation and 3D film production at Noroff University, and is using those experiences in his role as Producer and Lead Artist on Cold Horizon. He is responsible for producing concept art, promotional art, in-game character models and animation, as well as overseeing the team currently working on the project.
Alexander Alza - An artist with 12 published titles in 8+ years in the game industry. Alexander is a big believer that the art and atmosphere in a game should tell a story, and visuals should resonate and envelop the player into the total gaming experience.
Alexander studied in Game Art and Design at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and has won awards for his traditional art. Alexander has since worked on numerous popular franchises like; Call of Duty, Skylanders, WWE, and is currently working on Sword Coast Legends.
Alexander is very excited to join Big Cake Games and hopes to create captivating worlds in Cold Horizon for everyone to enjoy.
Elwira Kolber - An illustrator with a special interest in background and character design. Elwira's inspiration comes from a diverse range of mediums, from cartoons, movies and music, to the world around her.
Elwira acquired experience through freelance and studio work, gaining commissions such as Bloodmaiden by Christine E. Schulze, promotional illustrations, and orders from individual clients. During her time at primeMotion, Elwira realised background concept art and storyboards for the primeREH application, along with designing a visual identification for the app.
On Cold Horizon, Elwira is an environment artist. She prepares the landscapes, from assets to finished backgrounds, as well as mapping out the overall level design.
Erel Maatita - A well rounded concept artist and illustrator, Erel draws inspiration from a range of artists; Jim Lee, Feng Zhu, Mathias Zamecki, Jakub Rozalski, among many others. It was through his passion for art that he moved into freelance.
From there, Erel began working on such indie titles as; Garudayana Saga: Ahura Hunter and Heroes of Tiktakavya where he provided the games artwork.
Erel now works alongside Elwira, producing environment art and level mapping.
Ray Willmott - Ray has reviewed some of the greatest games of the last few generations and met some of the biggest names in the industry while working as a freelance games critic. His work can be seen in newspapers and on platforms such as VG247, GameZebo, Gfinity, GameTM, PLAY Magazine, 148 Apps, amongst others. He even runs his own website, Expansive DLC.
Ray took a career U-Turn last year when he started working with Fingerpunch Games on Runes of Camelot as a narrative designer and PR liaison. He helped launch their first title on PC and mobile platforms.
Using his combined level of experience, he now works alongside Sheraz as Executive Producer for Cold Horizon. His responsibilities include team management, preparing level design, in-game dialogue, character development, puzzles and the creation of the game's overall story. Ray also lends a hand in PR, such as social media promotion as well as interviews.
Gustavo Almeida - A Brazilian Motion Graphics Artist who began as a Graphic Designer 8 years ago before finding his true passion in animation.
Gus studied Advertising at University, specialising in Cinema Art Direction where he built a strong portfolio of work. He went on to work freelance on a number of projects, including; HyperX LATAM, Nvidia Gaming, Petrobras, the short film “Epifania”, Metlife Brazil, Itau Social, as well as both TV and online advertisments. Gus has also worked for many video production companies and agencies, such as GoMedia, DoubleLeft, O2, Mutato, Ventania, DogsCanFly, I9, Vulture, DP2, Entrekinhas, Angeli, Release, Intervisão, DMZP, A Cuca and Querô.
Gus uses both 2D and 3D techniques in his role as After Effects Animator, and is currently working on the cutscene animations for Cold Horizon.
Joe Worthen - A passionate illustrator that learned the art of animation, before specialising in computer animation while on a two year course in Computer Arts and Animation. Joe graduated with a Bachelors degree.
Joe went on to become a freelance artist, working on illustrative design, web animation and televised commericals. Examples of his work include a web animation for graphic design studio “Advanced Graphic Communications” website, and a North Country Career Centre (Vermont) TV commercial, for which he provided the animation.
Joe was drawn to Big Cake Games, after learning about the proposed Metal Gear project. It was through his love of the series that he came on board for Cold Horizon. He currently works on storyboard animatics, as well as in-game character animations.
Alex Burnett - Alex graduated with a BMus in Music and achieved a distinction for his MA in Composition for Film and Television. Training under such industry professionals as Film/TV composer William Goodchild, Alex acquired a great deal of experience as a composer and sound engineer, and many of his scores have received critical acclaim. He has worked with such clients as wildlife organisation ZSL London Zoo on a BBC award-winning documentary, UK cafe chain Boston Tea Party, and Panasonic. He has a keen interest in ethnic instruments, particularly flutes of which he owns around 30 from different parts of the world (some of which can be heard in the Cold Horizon soundtrack).
Alex took his first step into the video game industry when he produced music for game demos at the UK's biggest gaming event, EGX. It was his love of gaming that drew him to the proposed Metal Gear remake, in which he composed cinematic orchestral arrangements of the original 8-bit themes like Red Alert, updating and rearranging them to fit with the more modern scores of the series.
Alex works as Executive Producer and audio lead for Big Cake Games. His creative influence is crucial to the development of Cold Horizon, and he is also overseeing all aspects of the audio production throughout the game development process. He will be working with Christian to give Cold Horizon the unique and epic soundtrack that it truly deserves.
Christian Brehm - A passionate bassist from the age of 15, Christian has been playing in a band ever since. In 2011, they released their first EP and shared a stage with Manowar's “Ross the Boss” the same year. As Christian's love for music grew, so did his arsenal, teaching himself to play other instruments such as; Drums, Guitar, Keyboard and Harmonica.
In 2013, Christian took it upon himself to single-handedly produce his bands first full-length album, during which he radically improved his audio editing and production skills. It was this experience that would motivate him to explore other music genres including film and video game soundtracks.
Christian joined Big Cake Games in 2014, working alongside Alex on the score for the proposed Metal Gear remake. Since then, the two have continued to work together, both complimenting each others work with their individual strengths and knowledge, lending to the overall feel and tone of Cold Horizon's sound track.
Fionn Hurley - A music production student at L.I.T. Ireland, Fionn's background is a varied one, ranging from commercial music composition and production, short film score composition, live sound engineering, radio, deejaying and graphic design.
For Cold Horizon, Fionn's primary focus is foley and audio processing, bringing the sound FX to life using various production techniques.
Ian Ratcliffe - From his own experiences as a gamer, Ian has always felt inspired by the video game industry.
Having always worked in roles that engage with others, Ian found a way of bringing forward those experiences to his role as Head of PR. Ian brought together a team of passionate gamers to develop the proposed Metal Gear remake. Once development ceased, Ian decided to rebrand the team, hoping to establish Big Cake Games as a successful indie development company within the industry.
Having been responsible for establishing a relationship with Konami, Ian now seeks to promote the companies first original title, Cold Horizon. Currently, Ian's responsibilities are; handling all press/contact emails, researching, planning out schedules and strategies, decision making, fundraising and social media management, whilst managing the other Marketing and PR staff. Ian also manages the voice staff, holding the auditions and acting as a liaison between the voice actors and the audio team.
Jonathan Woodhouse - As a freelance creative, Jonathan's work spans several different areas of expertise, including; project management, arts production, marketing and PR, social media management, graphic and web design, image and video editing and content management.
After completing his MA at the University of London, Jonahan was cast by famed director and producer Luc Besson in “The Lady”, starring in a lead role opposite Michelle Yeoh and David Thewlis. Jonathan is now the marketing manager for the award-winning White Bear Theatre, artistic director for acclaimed company Encompass Productions and the general manager for Spellbound Productions.
Jonathan works alongside Ian on the game's Marketing and PR team, taking on general marketing management, social media and web-based tasks. He also built the company's website.

Risks and challenges
Over the last ten months, we've invested our time, money and effort into the development of Cold Horizon, diligently working on the game any chance we get. Whether it's building levels, composing the musical score or designing art and narrative, our part-time dream has turned into a full-time occupation. Now we're at the point where we need your help to continue development.
We've come to Kickstarter to ensure we engage with the gaming community, integrate their input into the development of Cold Horizon and create a high quality end-product that matches the full scope of our ambition.
As with the development of any game, there are risks. Cold Horizon might experience a delay due to additional features being added or removed, but we only anticipate this happening if something unexpected occurs during development, or if implementing a gameplay element takes longer than expected. Big Cake Games also faces a very specific challenge in that our team is based all over the world, therefore time-zone differences could present difficulties for us during development.
We have established a solid development plan for Cold Horizon, and have an experienced, dedicated and united team in place with industry experience to help us overcome the challenges that lie ahead. Their commitment will ensure the risks normally associated with crowdfunding projects won't hinder the release of an unforgettable, spellbinding gaming experience.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
