About this project
With 9+ years under our belts of publishing waterproof books and Bibles in a variety of different formats, we have long wanted to create a notebook that is extremely durable, can be used anywhere, embodies features you love, stands out, and is actually made in the USA - Birmingham, AL, to be exact. And that is where you come in. If you want to see TUFFNotes come alive, please join us on this journey. We will need your support, feedback, and certainly your sharing this campaign with your friends.

Design and Components
Traditional components were ruled out very quickly because any potential contact with moisture would be devastating on multiple accounts. Lots of branding was also ruled out as research shows simplicity is the way to go. We will therefore be limiting any printed branding to the outside bottom center of the back cover.
Pages - Having thoroughly researched and tested almost all of the synthetic papers on the market, Yupo has shown to have the best characteristics and features. Yupo is tree-free, acid free, waterproof, and incredibly strong. Because there is no wood pulp, you do not have to worry about your TUFFNotes growing mildew or mold. The moisture will simply evaporate out the page edges without causing the pages to wrinkle or warp. The Yupo grade we use is made in the USA.
Cover - We have selected PE (polyethylene) as the choice cover material because of its characteristics and features. Since PE is a through colored plastic, you do not have to worry about the color wearing off. This is the same material that plastic milk jugs are made out of which means it is extremely durable. The PE is made in the USA.
Plastic Spiral Binding - TUFFNotes are 180° lay-flat. We took this even further by using plastic spiral thus giving 360° opening capabilities. Plastic spiral is strong, durable, and flexible, so it will maintain its shape with continued use. Most notebooks use wire spiral or double wire-o, and while these binding methods look good, they easily bend and distort in pockets, bags, and from rough use rendering your notebook tough to use. The plastic spiral is made in the USA.
Elastic Band - These have become ubiquitous on notebooks, so we would be crazy to leave this out. The elastic band is hand attached by a pair of plastic snaps on the back cover. The elastic is made in the USA.
Writing Instruments - We have found the following to work well with minimal or zero smudging: standard ballpoint pen, Fisher Space Pen, pencil, colored pencil, or Sharpie permanent marker.
TUFFNotes stand out in the crowded space of notebooks as they are the only notebook that we have found to incorporate all of these components. Which in turn means, you just might get plenty of questions next time you are journaling, sketching, doodling, drawing, or note taking in a place where ideas generally get left behind.
Leather Cover - $23 per notebook
This is a nice, thick, rustic oil tanned leather cover that will come in addition to the plastic cover. The leather is Made in the USA from US hides that are tanned right here in the US. Initially, this will only be available in brown as I have not located a source of US leather in black yet. We chose oil tanned leather instead of vegetable tanned because it is water repellant and you can rub scratches out. We are omitting the elastic band on leather covers unless you specify that you would still like it. Given that leather is less rigid than the polyethylene, the elastic has a tendency to pull the corners up.
Dry Erase Pages - $7 per notebook
For those of you that love dry erase, this will prove to be a very nice feature. We will replace 12 sheets of the synthetic paper with 12 sheets of clear plastic dry erase film. These will be interleaved between the white synthetic paper giving you a white background to the clear sheets or you can remove the synthetic paper giving you the ability to layer your dry erase pages.
Replacement Page Sets - $15 per set with spiral
Replacement page sets can be added to your pledge giving you the ability to swap out the pages when you have filled your TUFFNotes notebook. These sets will included 200 pages (blank, dot grid, or ruled) and a new spiral.
To select an add-on(s), just add the total to your pledge and when the final survey comes out, you will then have a chance to inform us of what your add-on selection(s) are.
Here is how we came up with our goal of $15,000.
• Materials + Production = $10,500
• Packaging + Postage = $3,000
• Kickstarter + Amazon Fees = $1,500
We are shooting to have TUFFNotes hit the mail in March of 2015.
• R & D was completed in September 2014
• Kickstarter campaign preparation complete - November 2014
• Kickstarter campaign Dec 9 thru Jan 18, 2015 - 40 days
• Production, release of funding and survey responses - 55 days - This is when you will select your combination of cover color and page layout.
• Pick Pack Ship in March 2015

Risks and challenges
Our experience in producing waterproof books and Bibles for 9+ years should drastically limit our risks and challenges. Our biggest challenge would come from a production delay. Most of the work will be done by an accomplished, local print shop. Each unit will then undergo some hand finishing at our location. To reduce the impact of any production delay, we have built a month of cushion in the production schedule.
You can rest assured that if and when challenges arise, we will quickly and transparently communicate such to you because our reputation and your satisfaction is on the line.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
