About this project
Final Hours Update: Here's the truth - we really do not love asking for help, but we feel strongly about this movie. It might sound presumptuous, but I know that this movie will affect the people who see it, and I want as many people to see it as possible. Having sound and music done the right way will make that more possible. Please check it out, tell your friends, make a pledge, up your pledge...We need your help now!! Thanks Thanks Thanks!
I'm Trisha Borowicz, and with the 2 other members of AnC Movies, Charles Borowicz and Barnaby Aaron, we created Science, Sex and the Ladies. This movie and the 9 years of research that went into it were first sparked by a simple feeling, a feeling I think is not uncommon among women, that what society has insinuated about sex wasn't making sense compared to my actual experiences, feelings, and desires. In our wildest dreams we want this movie to spark a tipping point in the cultural discussion of sex. We want women to feel power over their own orgasm, to feel less shame and isolation when it comes to their desire. We want men to be more informed about the bodies of the women they love and to feel more empathetic to the sexual culture in which women have grown. We want girls to grow up informed about their orgasm, entitled to their desire, and supported by their community. We want large scale changes in the way our society depicts, discusses, and engages in sexual encounters.
Although we've been working in short video pieces since we graduated from high school together in 1998, this is our very first feature length movie. We've put our blood, sweat, tears, money and free time into this movie over the last 8 years, and now, as we are finally seeing the finish line, we need some help. We're here to ask the awesome Kickstarter family to help us finish this movie with the polished sound it deserves! Up to this point we have done everything on our own; from writing to editing to compositing to buying all our own equipment slowly over the years. We even crewed with just the 3 of us, plus a few bad ass friend who helped out now and then (okay we can't leave out our spectacular actors, make-up, hair, and the friends and family who supported, critiqued and helped us - but other that, it was pretty much all us). However, we can't play instruments, don't have a sound studio and can't write music. Luckily we have a great friend, Nathaniel Blume, (who BTW is a Hoosier like us but has since moved off to LA) who is a composer, and now we just need the funds to record the score and to get us professional sound finalizing.
Science Sex and the Ladies is a different kind of non-fiction movie. There are no talking heads or neutral backgrounds. Instead you will find an ensemble cast, carefully researched arguments, and even a musical number. It is a boisterous, innovative endeavor into a serious subject, and it will move past the status quo to show you female sexuality from a whole new perspective. There are very basic misunderstandings within our society about the female orgasm; specifically why and how it happens on a purely physical level; and this has led to misunderstandings about almost every aspect of female sexuality. As a result, too many women feel disappointed, ashamed, or inadequate when it comes to their sexuality. Too many men are perplexed and often hurt by the sexual relationship they share with the women they love, and too many girls feel confusion and a lack of control over their very real, yet culturally complicated sexual desire. As a society, we can and should do better.
Science Sex and the Ladies digs into existing sexual research and cultural studies on sex; pushing aside lazy incorrect pseudo-science about the nature of female sex drive and cutting through the layers of mystery and spiritual gobbledygook that unfortunately encompass our societal knowledge of female orgasm. What emerges is a better understanding of female sexuality, female orgasm, and female sex drive; one that is based in solid scientific inquiry, logical arguments, and the reality of the female experience.
As we said before, we need your help to fund the finishing touches of our movie, particularly for recording the score and for final sound sweetening. We're not saying we couldn't use more...we can. Any extra money we get will go into the travel, lodging, and materials needed for our get-people-to-watch-this-movie campaign. As you may know, we won’t receive any money and our backers won’t be charged unless we make the $20,000 by our goal date, so we’d be excessively grateful for any amount of backing - even $1 will be truly appreciated and let us know that you support our cause. If you can help us out in this way, thanks. We hope you'll enjoy the rewards we have put together for you.
Another important way you can help us is by spreading the word about this movie and this Kickstarter campaign. We need passionate people out there speaking for us. We made this movie because we have something to say, and we want to get as many people to listen as we can. The status quo that we critique will not reach a tipping point unless a lot of people begin to view female sexuality from a different perspective. Your help can make that happen!

Well, yes and no. If we did the final sound mix ourselves and if we got a few musicians we knew to record some music for free to lay down on the movie, then it would be less. Although, we'd still need a fair amount of money to rent studio space for recording even a few musicians.
However, we've spent many years giving this movie a professional, unique look, and we don't want to drop the ball when it comes to the sound. So many indie movies make that mistake. A professional voice/music/sound effects mix takes experience and skill - something that would take too long at this point for us to develop. It's worth spending money on. We also have an amazing opportunity to collaborate with our friend and composer Nathaniel Blume, who has a vision we like and trust, and who has real experience composing for motion pictures and TV. He will be able to give our movie the needed life and sparkle that only a custom orchestrated score can give. However, to make that happen, we have to hire experienced studio musicians, rent a place to record them and get a great recording. That costs way more than you'd think if you don't do that sort of thing all the time - and our budget is still pretty small scale.
We want the sound and music in Science Sex and the Ladies to guide you through the movie, to engage you, to inform your understanding, and to feel as innovative and fun as the rest of the movie. So, if that is our goal, then I guess our answer would be; yes, unfortunately the sound and music does cost that much.
No! We will love love love you! The holidays are coming up and people need to stay on budget. We get that. A $1 donation gives us more backers, shows that people support this movie, and can help us gain more visibility on the Kickstarter website so complete strangers can learn about what we're doing. So, to answer your question, a $1 donation is actually really helpful and would be truly appreciated.
