About

For the longest, all I've wanted to do was create.  All I ever wanted to do was create an environment for young dancers (specifically young dancers of color) and provide them with the artistic and professional training that they can really take out into the real world and make something of themselves.  That's how the idea of The Gallery Dance Collective came about.  Over the past year, I have been planning and spending sleepless nights on trying to find ways to really create a space for children, who are either interested in learning about the art of dance or trying to take their talent to the next level, to call home.

I love documentaries, and I remember watching The Radiant Child (revolving around the life and time of Jean-Michel Basquiat) about two years ago.  Of the two hours, that I watched that documentary, one of the things that I will never forget was a curator mentioning how most of the artwork we treasure and glorify isn't considered valuable or a true "work of art" until the artist has died.  That took me aback and really changed the way I viewed life and how I treat my craft.

That is why I've named this studio The Gallery: I don't want to wait until I've passed for my work to be recognized as worthy to be shared.  While I am alive, I want to mold these children to be the best they can possibly be, I want my faculty to unapologetically pour all of their knowledge into their students, and I want our students to walk away with a greater sense of self and the ability to create and share on their own, if their hearts so desire.

To say the least, I have invested everything that I have and DO NOT have into this project.  Aside from the help from our resident photographer, everything that has been dedicated to The Gallery's intellectual property has been done by me.  I have taken great pride in what I've been able to build with my bare hands, but I don't want to stop jut yet.  There are children who are depending on this space and have been really looking forward to the day that we can turn the key, open the doors, and say, "it's ours."  That is where your help comes in.  Your funding can help us find our home.  Our home will provide students with a place to adequately train and serve as the official rehearsal space for our pre-professional company in residence, Muse.

As you can see, we aren't asking for much; every bit helps.  With your help we will be able to:

  • Equip the space with mirrors
  • Change the floors, ensuring the dancers have a safe space to train
  • Pay the security security deposit and first month's rent as required by the landlord
  • Pay our AWESOME faculty and staff

I am a firm believer in fighting for your dreams.  And this is mine.  Please help me make this come true.

Risks and challenges

What haven't we faced already?! After a year of planning, we finally signed a lease with a broker and landlord. Of course, tenant improvements needed to be made: I requested that we have floors that reduce the impact of shock on the dancers' bodies, increase the ceiling height, and create a dressing room space for our kids so they don't feel violated while changing their clothes. With all of that, we were told (exactly three weeks prior to our anticipated open date) that the landlord no longer wanted to move forward with us. The landlord stated that with with everything we were asking (and all we wanted to do was to protect our greatest asset, OUR DANCERS) was too much and he didn't see any value in making such improvements for "just a dance studio." Because of this, we are currently facing the obstacle of renting out various spaces on a week-to-week basis. This then poses the problem of inconsistent scheduling, unforeseen commute dilemmas, and even more financial strains.

This, honestly, has been the grunt of our issue. We have to now place any money that we do have into renting space rather than pooling all that we have to find a new one. If that wasn't the worst thing we've come across, then it was probably brokers denying us automatically because "the landlord doesn't see any monetary value in turning a warehouse into a dance studio."

This has been our ongoing struggle and we FINALLY found a place that we can occupy for the next two years. However, the landlord is asking us for three months' worth of rent upfront. With your help, we can turn the money over immediately so that we can move in and begin creating a consistent training regimen for our kids.
