I’m creating this Kickstarter page to tell you about a new series of paintings I’m working on. I have an exhibit coming up at the Loading Dock Gallery in Lowell, MA during the month of May and this is a dual show that I’ll be doing with my fellow artist friend David Crane who is a wood sculptor. The title of our show is called "EMERGENCE" and we’ll be having an opening reception at the Loading Dock Gallery located on 122 Western Avenue (2nd Floor), Lowell, MA on the evening of May 5th, 2012.
My goal is to make 15-20 paintings for the show. Since David’s medium is wood, I wanted to incorporate wood somehow into my paintings and do it in such a way that was uncharacteristic to the way I normally paint. My vision is to incorporate figures and forms “emerging” from the bark of trees and from the roots of the earthen floor. I want to show the metamorphosis of an inanimate object into a living organism and watch as the form sheds its bark like skin and pushes free. The forms will slowly transition from raw bark, to wooden sculpture, and lastly into a living being. I plan on doing other creatures as well like birds, deer, insects, and other wildlife...not just people. The paintings are going to be really surreal, dreamlike, and will be reminiscent of Salvador Dali paintings whose work I admire.
This style of painting is completely different from my typical "vase and flower" paintings so to speak and I am definitely breaking boundaries that go beyond my comfort zone. I’m really excited to do this body of work and I feel it’s a natural progression to where I should be as an artist. I feel as an artist you should constantly be trying new things and playing with other techniques/mediums to help cultivate your creativity. Again, I'm very driven about this concept and I hope you can support me in creating this body of work.
Here are a couple of samples of works in progress from the show. They are just basic sketches done in charcoal on canvas with light washes of color blocked in. I promise the finished product will be much more detailed and colorful, but I atleast wanted to show you the direction I plan on moving in to give you a sense for the overall series.
So I’m looking to raise $750 for the project. This money will basically go toward production costs like canvas, paint and materials, framing, promotion for the show, food and beverages for the opening reception, postage to mail out artwork, and a ton of other expenses. Any bit of money you could donate would be helpful, whether it be a dollar or few hundred dollars, I could really use the support to help create this work. For your help donating, there are different incentives for the various amounts of money you pledge. Depending on how much money you pledge you can walk away with something as small as a print of one of my paintings or if you make a higher level donation you can walk away with an original framed oil painting from the show! So there are definitely some cool rewards there if you can help me out, I promise to hook you up.
If for some reason this body of work doesn't appeal to you but you would still like to pledge money to support my art career, I will offer my previous inventory of artwork as well as an alternative way to reward you for your donation. All of my traditional style oil paintings can be found on my official website at www.jjartworks.com. I have hundreds of paintings to choose from and if you like something on my site, let me know and I can match your pledge amount that way as well.
BEFORE THE SHOW
My goal is to have all of the paintings in the series completed by the end of April. Once I complete the paintings, I will email photos of the finished works to those backers that were able to pledge money and purchase a piece of art. I plan to do this by May 2nd or 3rd, a couple days before the opening on May 5th so you have first dibs on the new paintings before the general public does. All backers will have their artwork delivered to them after the show has concluded on May 27th.
Just as an FYI, Kickstarter has an all or nothing policy, so if I’m able to raise all of the funds or more by my deadline, than I’ll be funded all of your donations and this will help me out immensely for the project. If unfortunately I don’t reach my goal amount by the deadline then I won’t be funded any money and its going to make production for my show that much more difficult, so please spread the word to your friends and family and tell them about my project.
I just wanted to say thank you for checking out my Kickstarter video. If you’d like to see more of my work or learn more about me, please check out my official website at www.jjartworks.com or my facebook page at www.facebook.com/jjartworksbiz. So thanks again for the support everyone and I look forward to creating this new body of work for you all. Hope to see you all at the opening!
