William Henry Pratt AKA Boris Karloff, of mixed heritage (Anglo-Indian), with a stutter and a lisp, bowed legs, and a chronic back problem, overcame tremendous odds to become one of Hollywood's most beloved and enduring screen legends.
With warmth, humor, and a free-flowing theatrical flare, "KARLOFF" turns an affectionate spotlight on this man who was so much more than a monster. Along the way, the likes of James Cagney, Groucho Marx and Charlie Chaplin pop up to propel the story of a major 20th Century personality, and a warmhearted look at Hollywood history.
Sara Karloff, the actor's only child, and persona rights holder for her late, great father, has blessed the project with her official endorsement.
"The Boris Karloff Family is delighted that Randy Bowser has written the one-person-play, 'KARLOFF'...it's outstanding!" - Sara Karloff
Stephen Jacobs, whose definitive Karloff biography, "Boris Karloff: More Than a Monster" is the inspiration for the play, also provided invaluable input into the shaping of the script.
""Karloff: A play that is worthy of its legendary subject." -
In the fantasy limbo of the one-person-play format, this otherwise private man opens up and relives key moments of his life, jumping back and forth in time, speaking the words he said to friends, the press, and his fellow actors. The surprising grace, wit and humility Karloff brought to the adventure of his life unfolds in a kaleidoscope of fast-paced vignettes.
A vivid portrait of an unusual and fascinating actor, "KARLOFF" celebrates art and life, and blinks in amazement with new appreciation for the power of the indomitable human spirit.
Together, we can launch this very special new theatre piece so it can reach the broad audience it deserves.
To make it all happen! Even though "KARLOFF" is simple in its production needs, theatre is not an inexpensive proposition. While keeping all expenses as modest as possible, here are some of the budget items:
- Theatre rental - $2,000-$3,000
- Technical staff - $1,000
- Equipment rental - $500
- Royalties for copyrighted material - $500
- Performer - $500
- Publicity and Printing - $500
- Props/Furniture/Costume/Makeup - $900
- Videotaping - $2,000
THAT TOTALS at least $7,900: So I'm hoping to go over the funding goal here on Kickstarter. It doesn't seem realistic to aim for over $3,500, but obviously it would be EXTREMELY helpful if we can get this campaign to over-shoot the minimum goal.
Please note that your credit card will NOT be charged at the time that you make a pledge. Your card will only be charged if we reach the minimum fundraising goal.
If you are unable to donate, spread the word! Tell your friends, neighbors and colleagues.share our campaign on Twitter, Facebook, wherever you can! The more people who know about the show, the greater our chance of success!
Risks and challenges
In any area outside of the major metropolitan centers, it's a challenge to drum up interest in theatre. That challenge/risk is just a given when putting together a show in a town the size of Salem, Oregon.
But since the goal isn't to make money with this inaugural production of "KARLOFF," but rather to simply get it "on the map," and to have a way of demonstrating the script to potential publishers, the challenge is less daunting.
The potential audience for "KARLOFF" is huge. Who wouldn't enjoy meeting and making friends with cinema's most famous "boogie man" - ? That's the experience the audience for "KARLOFF" will have.
The possibilities for this show's success are strong. All we have to do is pitch in and get it off the ground! That's a challenge to easily get enthusiastic about.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
