We launched Beehive, the mathematics puzzle game in our last campaign. It was well received but it is designed for only one or two players. With Skip55 we have created a more complex arithmetic game for multiple players.  The basic concept is also based on the addition operation but pieces are numbered 1 to 10 and  -1, -3, -5, -7 -9, -10. This construct introduces subtraction calculations and together with the unknown value of dark pieces creates a very entertaining and educational strategic board game.

Young students also enjoy playing easily.
Young students also enjoy playing easily.

Move by jumping over one or two pieces. Take the first jumped piece. It will score its face value at the end of the game. The player who gets highest score at the end of game wins.

  • 1-4 players
  • 10 minutes
  • Ages 8+

Components:

  • One 4x4 board.
  • Ten light pieces numbered 1 to 10.
  • Six secret dark pieces numbered -1,-3,-5,-7,-9 and -10.
Skip55 basic set
Skip55 basic set

Setup:

  • The secret dark pieces are shuffled number side down.
  • All 16 pieces are put on the 16 board spaces either randomly or with players taking turns.
  • The first player (chosen randomly) removes one secret dark piece from the board and places it back in the box without looking at it.
  • It is now the second player’s turn.

Turns:

  • Choose a piece. Jump over an adjacent piece or two to the first vacant space horizontally, vertically or diagonally. Take the first piece jumped over.
  • If a secret dark piece is captured the player may look at it and then must take another turn.
  • Passing isn’t allowed.
  • When there is no capture possible, the game is over

Scoring:

  • Players reveal their secret dark pieces and then add all their pieces together.
  • The first player can decide whether to reveal the secret dark piece in the box. If it is revealed and is the -10 then the first player adds ten to their score. Otherwise the revealed piece is added as normal to the first player’s score.
  • Players record their score.

Winner:

When all players have played as first player, the game is over. The player who got the highest total score wins.

In a solitaire game only one game is played. A score above 30 is good; above 40 is excellent; above 50 is miraculous; 55 is perfect.

Expand Play:

You may play using alternative calculations where you change the arithmetic operation from addition to subtraction or multiplication.

Abstract Play:

Place the dark pieces face up at the beginning of play. No bonus reward is given to the first player.

Optional Arithmetic Operations:

Basic play uses addition. Optionally, players can experiment with other arithmetic operations. There are 16 cards: four each of +,-,×,÷.

  • The cards are shuffled and placed face-down beside the game board.
  • Players draw a card at the end of their turn (the first turn they do not have one).
  • Players place the card next to the piece that they last captured.
  • Players calculate their score moving from oldest captured piece to newest. Perform operations on the pieces from left to right without following standard mathematical rules for order of operations.
  • After division remove the digits after the decimal.

Above calculation will simply be

  • 6 + 10 - -9  ÷ 2 x 9 ==> 16 - -9 ÷ 2 x 9 ==> 25 ÷ 2 x 9 ==> 12.5 x 9 ==> 12 x 9==> 108
  • not 6 + 10 - ((-9 ÷ 2) x 9)) ==> 16 -( -4.5 x 9) ==> 16 - (-4 x 9) ==> 16 - -36 ==> 52

This cards set will accomplish many playing variations. Younger students can create new game rules easily for themselves.

Mr. Gordon Hamilton gave us a game review. He is a designer of Santorini and He founded MathPickle in 2010 to inject unsolved problems into the classroom in Canada and north America. We will show his review. Thanks Gord!

Skip55 is the latest board game from the prolific designer Mitsuo Yamamoto. He specializes in games of logic and pure strategy with overt mathematics. This makes his games good candidates for the math classroom. I'll be reviewing the basic game without cards because I like the emphasis on problem solving over arithmetic.

The base game is elegant with minimal rules and a beautiful clean look. Both are Mitsuo's doing. When I first heard of using tile I thought the quality craftsmanship should probably be replaced by the cheaper industry standard of a cardboard board and cardboard, wooden or plastic pieces. I was wrong. I knew it as soon as I opened the package. It is a tactile joy to play with the sturdy, beautiful ceramic pieces.

The play is fast. Games are over in about 10 minutes. Average grade 2 or 3 children might take a bit more time to add up their numbers at the end.

The game is tactical rather than strategic meaning that most of your time will be spent figuring out the next few turns rather than gaining insight about the future.

I've now played several games - most with the negative ceramic pieces face down. I like the game with this hidden information although Mitsuo suggests a variant in which all numbers are face up. Both variants work, but the hidden information ones are more interesting because their capture leads to an extra turn.  I like it. Hope you do too ;-)

Risks and challenges

All games are craft articles made by hand. High demand could possibly delay our reward delivery schedule.
We are sure it is very valuable and unique game despite somewhat expensive international shipping from Japan. You could not get Skip55 from any other place in the world.

Reward is shipped by ordinary SAL air mail. It usually takes for a month or two from Japan to your door. Backers will not receive tracking information for these rewards. If you want safe and fast shipment, please upgrade shipment to increase 600JPYen for International E-packet with tracking information and insurance.

VAT & Tariff
We provide our games by international shipping from Japan, your country may impose VAT and import tariff on the products according to its own policy. Since we are not up to date with the information about VAT/tariff policy of each country, it is recommended that each backer check with their country's policies beforehand. (Usually it is not imposed when the total price is below a certain threshold.) The typical procedure is that the backer pays these fees to the delivery company personnel when receiving the product.
