About this project
THE YEAR: 2496
LOCATION: LOS ANGELES, CA
Technology has extended the population's lifespan. Overpopulation is a critical concern. The solution is a single implant in the heart, known as a SY9 capsule, which controls a person's "Expiration Date." Their death is randomly determined, and they die peacefully in their sleep. Then a controversial Presidential candidate threatens to end the SY9 program, and suddenly his “Expiration Date” occurs. Coincidence or Conspiracy. If an Expiration Date could be manually activated, then no one is safe! Follow the action as Dack Cutter gets unwittingly involved in solving the case. Can he find the truth or will he meet his Expiration Date?
Expiration Date: Written by Robert Zappia, Illustrated by Lee Wiley
Expiration Date is a sci-fi thriller which takes inspiration from classics such as Blade Runner and Logan's Run, as well as newer fare such as Tron : Legacy. It has heart-pounding action with endearing characters enveloped in a story that leaves you on the edge of your favorite reading chair.
In early 2011, Robert and I discussed adapting a film script that he wrote as a graphic novel. He gave me the script and I got sucked into this action packed, cyber-punk, futuristic, sci-fi, thriller (insert your favorite adjective here!) script, and I was on board!
By the end of 2011, we had successfully funded the creation and printing of the first 40 page issue of the series, right here with you on Kickstarter! It was a massive success for us! We released the first issue in March 2012 at WonderCon. We made a good splash for our first book and first convention, but we knew that we'd have to keep our momentum and complete the story!
Over the next 4 years, we personally funded the rest of the issues and premiered each one at Stan Lee's Comikaze Expo. We are completing the fifth and final issue now for release at this year's show!
This has all been possible by the fans and the support of so many! It's kept the fire going so that I could stay up late and work on this passion project, and it's helped us to keep sharing our book at conventions.
With the whole book being complete (200+ PAGES!), I want nothing more to get the whole story into the hands of fans, and to reach new fans. To do this, I need your help! Being an independent creator, it's expensive to solely fund projects, and get books printed. That's where crowdfunding is the answer! Your support will fund these books so that you can take home the story, and other great Expiration Date items and artwork.
We will premiere the final issue of the story, and the complete edition at Stan Lee's Comikaze on October 28-30, 2016. Your Support will assist us in having an eye-catching booth and books for fans to purchase.
The Book - First and foremost, we want to get the book into your hands! There are 2 options, the Digital PDF version or the Print version. Beyond that, I have some great goodies for you! I will sign each printed book purchased, and all "Fan Bundle" books will be signed by Robert and me.
Digital Wallpaper set - This set includes backgrounds for your computer featuring the cover art from issues 1-5 and the complete edition cover.
Prints - A handful of my very talented artist friends have contributed work to be included in this book. And as an exclusive part of this Kickstarter, they will be available for you to own as prints. Here are the first 6 featured, 2 more will become available during the Kickstarter, and potentially more.
Large Poster - a 18x24 poster of the Expiration Date: Complete Edition Cover Art to adorn your wall.
T-Shirt - The eye capturing design of the"Your Time is Running Out" tagline and the lights of Expiration Date are captured on this one of a kind t-shirt. I've had mine for 4 years, and now you can get your own!
Custom Cardboard Commissions - For the past 2 years, I've taken to offering Cardboard Commissions at comic conventions. The Fans love these, and request their favorite character to be immortalized on Cardboard! Toned Paper is also an option for you. So don't miss out on getting your own custom art with your book!
3D Printed objects - This one is so exciting! The chance to own a physical object that is from the book. The SY9 capsule and the Black Hole Grenade are 2 iconic objects from the book and are being created for you. The basic versions will be available, as well as more advanced versions with LED lights and a display case. (Created by Prometheus 3D Printing) Check out the 3D designs for printing (We will have an early look at these during the campaign!)
Producer Credit - One of the goals of this book is to get it into the hands of movie studios, and get them to produce a film based on the book! By becoming a producer, your financial support will go in part towards funding pitch packages for movie studios. Plus, you will get a pass for Stan Lee's Comikaze in October! And your name will be listed on the book's opening page credits as a producer, along with Robert and me.
The world of Expiration Date is set in a era of overpopulation. Technology is everywhere. The decay of society and the relics of the past are everywhere. When I created the art for this book, I wanted to build a world that took elements of the sci-fi genre that inspired me and put them together. I wanted light and atmosphere to surround you. I wanted cinematic staging and pacing to create a graphic novel experience that you would remember.
$12,000 - all pledges over $100 get a sketch inserted into their book
$18,000 - books get upgraded to hardcover
$20,000 - dust jacket gets added to books
$22,000 - 3D object bundles get a 3rd and BRAND NEW object added to their package, the Tracker Drone!
Robert Zappia - The Writer - After graduating from USC with a B.A. in Cinema-Television Production at the age of 20; Robert went on to become one of the youngest writers in network history to write a number one show, when his Mother’s Day episode of HOME IMPROVEMENT garnered the #1 spot on television for the week. After writing on a number of hit sitcoms, Robert took a break from comedy and made the transition to feature films writing the thriller Halloween: H20, a sequel to John Carpenter’s successful Halloween franchise. Halloween: H20 opened at the top of the box office and went on to become the highest grossing film of the franchise. Robert’s writing, producing, and directing career continues to span a number of genres and mediums including television, feature film, animation, education, books and graphic novels.
Lee Wiley - The Illustrator - I have always dreamed of creating comics. I created my first comic with computer paper stapled together when I was 11 years old. I've been into art for as long as I can remember. I received my BFA in Illustration in 2009, and have been professionally creating Comics, Graphic Novels, Animation, Videos, Cardboard sketches, and Artwork, ever since.

Risks and challenges
The book is nearly done and will be by the conclusion of the campaign, so the product is complete and the biggest concerning is getting the book printed.
As long as things stay on schedule with the printer, I will be able to get this book into every backers' hands as scheduled. A few of the other rewards require a little bit of production time as well, but I'm not too worried, I'm working with great people and businesses.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
