Ordering system, manufacturing schedule and some pictures

We’re now about four weeks from when the production of the Almond+ will start and it’s very important that you read through this update if you want to be able to take delivery of your Almond+ as soon as possible. 

Ordering system 

On Monday morning UTC+8 we’ll be sending out an account activation email for our ordering system to the email address associated with your Kickstarter address. If this email address isn’t up to date for some reason, please let us know as soon as possible via a PM here on Kickstarter so we can change it. 

The email will include a unique link tied to your email address and if you follow that link you’ll be taken to a page where you have to set up a password for your account. Once this has been done, you can log in and verify your order, as well as your address details and telephone number. You’ll be able to edit all the details here if you notice anything that’s wrong. For those of you that haven’t responded to the survey that we sent out via Kickstarter, you’ll also be able to fill in the missing details straight into the ordering system, rather than having to do so via Kickstarter. In addition to this, there will be options to upgrade to a different colour (sorry, no downgrades) for the same price difference that we asked for on Kickstarter. 

For those that haven’t paid for international shipping, you’ll also be able to pay this at this point in time, as otherwise we’re afraid we’ll be unable to ship your Almond+. Finally, this is also where you’ll be able to add the previously mentioned ZigBee sensors to your order. Of course, apart from those that haven’t paid for international shipping, everything above is optional.

Some of you have asked about purchasing additional units and the short answer here is that at the moment, we’re not certain that we’ll have additional units. If we have additional units, these will be offered at a higher price than that of the Kickstarter units, due to the increased cost of the Almond+ based on the hardware improvements we’ve done. We will be able to let you know if we can offer additional units before we start shipping and we will announce the cost as well if this becomes a viable option for us. 

Manufacturing update

We’ve completed our first small pre-production run and the mass production will be done in larger batches. This is done so we can make sure there are as few quality control related issues as possible. As such, we’ll be shipping units as and when one of these batches are done. There’s a lot of manual work involved, like calibrating the Wi-Fi, ZigBee and Z-Wave radios and programming the firmware of the ZigBee and Z-Wave radios during the production. Each batch will take the factory about two to three days to complete and we’re expecting the whole production to take about two to three weeks from start to finish. We expect to start production on the week of the 9th of June and if all goes as planned, we should have finished the production before the end of June. 


Below are some pictures of the manufacturing process of the housing for the Almond+ as it’s being made by one of our manufacturing partners. It shows the mould being inspected before the moulding process, the actual enclosures being moulded, parts in the moulds and finished parts out of the mould. We’ve also included a picture of the front part of the Almond+ enclosure in all of the different colours that are available to give you an idea of the final look and finish.

      Hi, I 'm in Taipei and have confirmed with you before that I don't have to pay for international shipping. Can I somehow bypass the "Unpaid International Shipping" message in the ordering system? Thanks!

      My activation e-mail is also not working. The URL it redirects to is which implies that the token in the link wasn't valid. Maybe a kickstarter message formatting or truncation issue? Hope that helps.

      @Baris - We need to confirm these upgrades manually, so it takes some time before you'll see the option to do this. The reason for this is because the Almond+ is already part of the account rather than being an item in the shopping cart.

      Greetings securifi - I need help on an order. I did the $20 upgrade on color and despite logging off, logging on, restarting my browser (and definitely getting charged for it based on an alert from my credit card company) - I am unable to choose a color other than black/white. Appreciate if you could help me.

      @Daniel - This was a bit of a glitch on our end that should be fixed by now, but we have you down for a white unit, so no worries.

      @Securifi, I pledged for the $109 Pearl White, but it showed up as Black when I checked the ordering system. I updated it and it's now showing correctly.

      The reason I'm mentioning this is because backers that pledged for the same thing and don't update it will be disappointed when they get the wrong color. Please correct this so there wont be any headaches later on.

      I do see similar issues as Ian, I see United States right after City, there is State missing on front page, but when I go into address details, it shows fine!

      Minor note - the address box on the right side of the shipping page doesn't show the province I live in (in Canada), but it does show up when clicking the View Addresses link underneath. I'm assuming the full address from that page will be used for shipping and it is just a missing field display on the main shipping page.

      I got two account activation emails, about 7 minutes apart. I responded to the second and activated. I got the "PO Box ... Change shipping address" warning. I added a street address and made it the default -- still got warning. Deleted PO Box altogether: no joy. Deleted street address and added back PO Box, then edited to point to street address -- still got warning. Is "default" address not shipping address? I'm using IOS Chrome on iPad; are there options I'm not seeing?

      We've sent out a limited amount of invites to the ordering system just to make sure everything is working as expected. The remaining invites will be going out first thing local time tomorrow instead which will be in about 16-17h from when this comment was posted. So please bear with us, your invite will be with you as soon as we know everything is working smoothly.

      @Antony - Most likely before the end of June. Our beta units took on average 4-6 days to be delivered.

      @Arnold - Yes, the Almond+ will be a commercially available product. The issue at hand is that this is our first mass production of the Almond+ and as with anything you manufacture there can yield issues. We're making more units than just for our backers, but until we've made the first fill batch, we won't have a full picture of the production flow and yields, as the Almond+ is a comparatively complex router to manufacture. That said, we hope to at least be able to offer a few hundred extra units, but keep in mind that this will be at a different price point than what you paid for your Kickstarter unit due to all the hardware changes we've implemented. We'll provide some details about expected MSRP etc. in a future update.

      Question for Securifi:

      I was under the impression that you were planning on offering this as a commercial product. I found the statement "we’re not certain that we’ll have additional units" to be in conflict with that. Like perhaps you are just producing this run of the Almond+ and then moving on?

      Can I ask the reason why? or did I just read this erroneously?

      @Lance - Wi-Fi calibration should be done on all routers, although the chipset vendors are starting to release chipsets that come pre-calibrated. So far this is mostly for 1x1 and some 2x2 solutions, but it's expected to come to more complex configurations as well. The calibration process is unique to each router and is done with some rather complex and expensive equipment that measures the transmit power of the Wi-Fi radios and the sets them to the same transmit power levels. This is a simplified explanation, but it's roughly what's being done. This data is then stored on the router. ZigBee and Z-Wave it's less complex, but done in a similar manner.
      Programming the ZigBee and Z-Wave chips mostly involves putting some manufacturer specific code in to the chips, but they won't function without this.

      What is the process of calibrating the Wi-Fi, ZigBee and Z-Wave radios? Does calibrating the Wi-Fi happen with all Wi-Fi routers during their manufacture or is this something unique to the Almond+?

      i'm glad you are sharing behind the scenes info, as that allows us to catch a glimpse of how difficult this whole process has been and why you had to be careful each step along the way.

      I am very excited about getting mine set up and finally starting to expand my home automation goodies.

      Cool, I have not had so much time to play with my Dev unit, but from what I have done it is a very nice device, and I look forward to the final version, with the extra sensors that I'm going to order.
      It is always interesting to see behind the scenes, so more of that.

      Actually I can tell a small story of where I got some use for it.
      I live in an apartment on the second floor, and I wanted to take my laptop and go and sit in the playground while my kid was playing outside. But my Wifi does not reach there. So I took my Almond+ and connected it with a long cable and put it in my bathroom window that is somewhat facing the playground. Only problem is that I do not have any power outlet there, but I had a batterypack ( that can supply 12V 8A, so I connected this, and now I had Wifi all the way to the playground. Handy, I suppose that in the future I would not have needed the cable as the Almond+ will support Range extender, but my Dev unit does not have this yet. Awesome product.

      What is the frequency of the Z-Wave system ? since we are using Z-Wave Euro, can we have the unit with Euro Z-Wave instead of US Z-Wave ?
