Sensor purchase survey

We apologize for the interruption of our regular schedule, but we wanted to give you a heads up that we’ve sent out a survey asking you to fill in some details with regards to potential interest in purchasing ZigBee sensors (2.4GHz, can be used globally) that will ship alongside your Almond+. The content of the survey is included below, as well as a link to the survey itself. We’ve done this as some of you have unsubscribed from SurveyMonkey which is the tool we use to send surveys and as such we can’t reach you. There are also some pictures of the sensors on offer at the bottom of this update, as well as pricing details. Note: The survey will end Monday the 14th of April 04:00 UTC (12:00 noon UTC+8 Taiwan time).

Edit: Sorry, but we removed the link to the survey due to spam submissions, so please use the link in the survey email we sent if you're a backer. If you didn't receive the survey, please let us know and we'll send you a link to the survey.

Due to a lot of requests on Kickstarter for an option to purchase sensors with your Almond+, we’ve put together a survey to see if there’s enough interest from our backer community for us to arrange a selection of sensors that we would be able to ship with your Almond+. This is not a binding agreement to make a purchase, but we hope that everyone interested in purchasing sensors with their Almond+ answers this survey in such a way that we can base our orders on it.

The sensors on offer are ZigBee sensors that operate at 2.4GHz. We can’t offer Z-Wave sensors due to there being way too many regional variations. Note that any mains powered sensors would be for US style NEMA 1-15P type sockets only, as our sensor partner doesn’t offer any other power plug options at this point in time.

For those of you not interested in ordering any sensors, your Almond+ will ship as soon as it's ready. However, we want to be clear that ordering sensors means a slight delay in shipping your Almond+ to you, as our sensor partner won’t be able to deliver the sensors to us until the end of May. However, it also means that there would be no additional shipping charges, as we’d ship the sensors alongside your Almond+ at no extra cost.

The pricing of the sensors will be as per below:

Door/Window sensor - $25

 PIR motion sensor - $30

 Binary power on/off switch $30

 Flood sensor - $25

 Siren - $40

 Key fob - $15

@Dash - We'll have some info tomorrow as to the result of the survey and what's next.

    2. Dash on

Hm... I wanted to buy a few... but I can't wait any longer... O well I'll order for the devices later on

    3. SECURIFI Creator on

@Jeff - Not at all, this is simply a survey at this point in time. However, if we go ahead and do this and you want the sensors to ship with your Almond+, we can't ship until the end of May due to the fact that our sensor partner can't ship to us until then. That said, we're considering an option where you can pay extra postage to have the sensors sent separately if you decide you want to purchase some. That is of course we we have enough interest in the first place so it makes sense doing this.

I completed the survey. I am hoping this doesn't cause further delays in shipping the Almond+ simply because I specified sensors I may be interested in.

    5. SECURIFI Creator on

@Benedict & Dustin - Not at this point in time as our current sensor partner doesn't offer such a product. We'll see what we can do in the future though.

    6. Dustin Harley Davidson on

I agree wit Benedict. A temperature sensor or thermostat would be awesome and the second most wanted one by me personally.

    7. Benedict Murray on

Hi - thanks for offering sensors at a reasonable price. Very cool.

One request: would you be able to offer a temperature sensor? That way I could better automate heating controls.

      Thanks

      Ben

@Bryan - The siren is rated at 85dB at 3 meters (10 feet).

@Wesley - Possibly, we're looking at all the options and we'll make an announcement once we have decided what we'll do.

I am very interested in your sensors, but I do not want to wait for my [first] Almond+ any longer than necessary. I have been one of the people asking about the possibility to purchase these sensors, but I have also asked about the possibility to purchase a second Almond+ at less than retail but perhaps more than my pledge. I would like it very much if at that time we could get some sensors added in with no addition to shipping cost.

@Kevin, Head over to http://forum.securifi.com and ask there, I there is already some ideas there, but ask and I can provide you with plenty of ideas. Commenting on KS is not a good format for this kind of discussions. ;-)

      @Securifi - Thanks!

    12. SECURIFI Creator on

@roberto - With the exception of the binary power on/off switch, they're all battery powered. The flood sensor and the key fob uses CR2032 batteries, the other three uses CR123A batteries.

    13. roberto sanz on

I would like to know which sensors use batteries and which others are connected to the grid

      @Securifi - Thanks!

    15. SECURIFI Creator on

@Gerald, Robert & Bryan - We're looking into the option of offering the sensors as a separate thing, but with shipping costs not being included. We'll know better in a few days when we've evaluated all the survey data. We're expecting to receive the sensors by the end of May.

      @Bryan - Please see http://wiki.securifi.com/index.php…
It's not a complete, but it contains most of the core specs of the first four sensors. We haven't added the siren and key fob yet, as we didn't offer either to our beta/dev backers. The PIR is a simple PIR sensor only and sadly we don't have the dBA rating for the siren at the moment, but we'll find out for you.

    16. Kevin F. on

@Brian Thanks for the security overview. Very helpful. Any other links to websites that would provide a basic overview for other home automation ideas?

    17. Missing avatar

      Bryan Allen on

Do you have links to specifications for these sensors? I'd like to know a little more about the sensors before I decide to buy them with the Almond+. For example, if the motion sensor is PIR only or if can also sense light level, how loud the siren is, etc. And are these prices less than what you'll be selling them for later (not counting shipping)? If you can provide model numbers so I can Google the specifications and normal prices, that will work too.

    18. Robert Holbert on

@Securifi - Will you have additional sensors (albeit without free shipping and possibly at higher price points) available shortly after the shipping of almond+, or will it be say 3+ months before they're available? Of course we could buy other Zigbee / Z-Wave sensors, but I wanted to see if it's worth ordering with my Almond+ since I'm not sure what I'll use yet without using the interface / seeing what's available.

    19. Missing avatar

      Gerald Fountain on

I would be interested in some sensors as the prices seem pretty good. You mention that _some_ of the sensors might result in a delay. Do you have a list of which sensors would NOT cause a delay? I'd like the unit as soon as it's ready. If there are some choices that wouldn't impact it, I'd likely get some.

@Kevin, As Securifi said, every home is different. But think of it like this.
I know that Securifi is not offering every kind of sensor yet, but you can mix from other vendors.

If you want it for Home Security usually you have three modes:
      - Unarmed.
      - Home/Shell protection.
      - Away

      Unarmed:
Means that only sensors like Fire sensors, Flood sensors, etc, are active.
Count a flood sensor for things like Dishwasher, Laundry, and other places where you could get water but where there is not supposed to be water.
Count a fire sensor for every room or at one outside every bedroom.

      Home/Shell protection:
This is sometimes also called Night mode. Additionally to Fire and Flood, you now also activate Door/Window sensors. (Count one for each opening to the outside, so each Door or Window.)

      Away:
Now you also activate PIR sensors and other door sensors you might have on internal doors.
Count a PIR sensor for each room, or at least for the entry points in the house.

Since the Almond+ is much more than Home security. It is also Home Automation, you might want to add more sensors to make your house smarter
But I think you get the idea.

    21. SECURIFI Creator on

@Eric - No worries, if you're not interested you don't have to respond at all, in fact there should be an option to skip the question altogether.

    22. SECURIFI Creator on

@Kevin - That's a bit tricky, since every home has a different layout. It also depends on what you want to do and what you're looking to control or get notifications about.

@Aaron - We're working as quickly as we can to get the Almond+ ready to be made and shipped and we're truly sorry about the delays. We're sorry to hear that what we've shown hasn't lived up to your expectations. Please feel free to share what those are so we have an idea as to where you want us to take the product.

    23. Eric Jeffrey Blohm on

If we don't want to order any sensors, should we still complete the survey? Cause I don't want any, and just put 0 for all the answers, and I'm hoping that's what I was supposed to do.

Can't wait for it to ship! Sorry you've got to deal with so many people that are getting confused and upset over a delay that isn't actually happening..

      Aaron Levey on

If I knew the Almond+ was going to do what I need it to, I'd be buying several zigbee devices from you BUT my confidence that Almond+ will do anything close to what I want it for seems like a pipe-dream. I've been UNIMPRESSED with everything I've seen/read so far and the fact there have been so many delays/issues makes it worse.

Ship the darn thing... THEN offer the backers product deals AFTER we see this thing is going to be anything beyond a boat anchor.

    25. Kevin F. on

Seems like an excellent deal for some zigbees. It would be great if you could post a link to an overview of a recommended setup for home automation. For example, 3 BR home would typically purchase...

    26. SECURIFI Creator on

@Frank - Sadly we can only offer the limited amount of sensors above, as the other devices would have much longer lead times and we think we're pushing out the boat as it is for those that decides to go ahead and place orders if we decide to go through with this sensor "upgrade" offer.

    27. Frank Wiebenga on

The Zigbee Energy Switch would be awesome. http://www.sercomm.com/contpage.aspx…

    28. SECURIFI Creator on

@Scott - It's a 2-pin un-grounded device. The data on the Wiki doesn't mention grounding. There are some pictures with what appears to be a grounded version if you look around, but the end that goes into the wall socket is ungrounded and the company that makes the device changed the design, but didn't update the pictures. Here's a picture of the actual device - https://s3.amazonaws.com/ksr/assets/001/184/420/4ea834215097236ccfb78175d5e835ef_large.jpg…

      Scott Bohlmann on

So the binary power switch is ungrounded in the picture above but grounded on the wiki page. Which type of plug will be the one the ships, as that would determine if I order some of these.

    30. SECURIFI Creator on

@KRIS - We simply wanted to see if there was enough interest, as we've had quite a few requests to buy the sensors we offered to the beta and developer level backers. We decided to throw in a couple of other options available to us as well. Again, to make this very clear, this will NOT cause any delay to the shipment of the Almond+ if you're not interested in purchasing sensors to go with it. We're merely offering this as an option to those interested. We simply can't afford to offer free global shipping on something like this, at least not at these kind of prices. That said, the long term goal is to offer our own brand sensors and devices, but right now our focus is on getting the Almond+ manufactured and shipped to all our backers as soon as possible. The reason behind the delayed shipment if you want sensors is that our sensor partner can't deliver quicker than by the end of May and as such, we can't ship the Almond+ with the sensors until then.
Hopefully it's clear now that there will be no delays due to this for those that are not interested in getting sensors with their Almond+.

      Aman Patel on

To everyone, the prices on these sensors are pretty much whole sale. If you are interested, I would suggest you get as many as you need/afford with your router. The cheapest z-wave sensor (albeit multi-sensor) is atleast $45 (from aeotec and rebranded Schlage).

    32. Missing avatar

      KRIS on

I'm like many here just patiently waiting for the Almond+ to ship.

Sure that sensors are cool but having another delay in shipping if I choose to add a sensor is not worth it to me.

Maybe some of us just want to do more research on these sensors or read reviews after those who had ordered the sensors. If they work well with the Almond+ or not by actual users.

But honestly most of us have waiting long enough and accepted all the delays up until now.

I'm more of a researcher and read reviewer and rather buy the sensors later after reading others experience with them on their Almond+. I don't mind paying shipping, but would be a smarter move to give free shipping to Kickstarter backers of this project (that is what I would do).

      on

Awesome Securifi, this was one of the things I was looking for. when I look at prices of sensors here in Sweden(I only found Z-Wave), your sensors are half price. So I will certainly order a few.

For those who want more information about the sensors, There is also a bit of information about the sensors on the wiki: http://wiki.securifi.com/index.php…

Although not all have been added yet, like the Siren and Keyfob, the rest should be there.

    34. SECURIFI Creator on

@Dwayne - It could be used for various things, as the buttons can be configured to trigger certain things, like unlocking your door or "arming" your alarm etc.

@Aurélien - Yes, the Almond+ can use both types of sensors simultaneously and it's possible to communicate between the ZigBee and Z-Wave mesh networks.

    35. SECURIFI Creator on

@All - There appears to have been some confusion here. We're not adding any new features, we're not delaying the shipment for those that don't want any sensors.
We simply asked a question to see if there was enough interest from some of our backers to purchase sensors that would be delivered with their Almond+. In the case of there being enough interest, for those that want the sensors, it would mean a short delay, as we'd ship the sensors alongside the Almond+ to those that want sensors. Everyone else won't be affected.

hi, can we use either zigbee and zwave sensor at the same time ?
How long the shipping Will be delayed ?

    40. Dave W on

I'd be interested, but I'm not interested in ANOTHER delay so I'll pass and buy sensors later so I get my router "early".

I left out the binary switch since you said it only comes in US version.
I included a flood system hoping it is not US based (220v version).

    43. Lewis Purvis on

Is there an option where if the interest in additional sensors is small, you will just ship the router units out asap? Will the 'delay' only affect those who actually want these additional sensors? I would sacrifice this no extra shipping cost if it meant i got the router sooner. Personally i have answered the survey with interest but i thought that's all it was gauging. i wouldn't want to have a unit delayed because i have been marked as somebody who definitely wants their almond to ship with sensors.
