The Maelstrom RPG was first published in 1984 and remains a classic to this day. Fast and innovative mechanics, evocative characters, flexible magic and the preeminent RPG herbal made this a game ahead of its time.
Now it is time to bring this classic game to a new generation of gamers with a brand new edition. Arion Games are taking the core Maelstrom game and reworking it with:

This game sends a motley collection of characters in search of the weird and the supernatural at the behest of their patron: A powerful Baron of King William the First of England. Drawn from all walks of life, these characters have all experienced the supernatural at first hand and lived to tell the tale.
New layout, writing and commissioned art from Chris Waller all bring this new book to life. The rules for this new game have already been written and are being playtested and the art creation has started, meaning that should this project be funded it should be a fairly rapid progression into print.

STRETCH GOAL - £1700
With the initial target reached, we can start to work towards additional material. If the funding total reaches £1700, we will commission the cartographer Steve Luxton (Fighting Fantasy, Blacksand etc) to put together a 20+ page book of maps, charts and building plans to really enhance your games. Towns and villages will be laid out and houses, churches and castles will all be mapped to really enhance your game.
And what is more, we will send a digital copy to every backer as soon as it is available, and a print copy to every backer who has chosen a physical book reward level.
STRETCH GOAL - £2500
With the first stretch goal met, we can add another!
If the funding total reaches £2500, we will add a GM pack to every £30 pledge or above. This will contain 3 different reference cards (3 copies of each), a pad of 50 A4 character sheets and a landscape GM screen.
And if we hit this second goal, there are more we can add...
Stretch Goal - £3000
If we reach this stretch goal, all backers at £30 and above will also get a pair of customised Maelstrom d10's, perfect for invoking the Maelstrom itself!
Stretch Goal - £4000
Whoa. We hit that one far faster than i anticipated. So, if we get to this one, all backers at Hardback and above get a 40 page adventure investigating the strange goings on in an old Saxon church. Is it outlaws, is it a ghost, something more?
Ideal as an intro adventure or to be woven into a longer campaign, this will be provided in pdf format to all backers and in print format to all £30+ pledges. And what is more, it will be illustrated by Russ Nicholson!
Stretch Goal - £5000
And another! If we reach this goal, 5x our original target, we will prepare an "Investigators Handbook". This will have a copy of the guide to life in 1086 from the core book, but will also have players views on the attributes and characteristics, livings and equipment. It will have a players (characters) guide to magic and the supernatural, and it will also have a guide to investigation.
This will not replicate any of the mechanics or rules from the corebook but will instead help players new to the rules or settings get an easy idea of how the game plays.
A print copy will be included for all pledges of £30 or above, and extra copies will be available as an add-on! All backers will however get a pdf copy.
Stretch Goal - £6000
The stunning success so far shows the huge popularity of the original Maelstrom game and the appetite for this new version! So, if in the last frantic few days we can reach £6K, all Hardback or above backers will get a copy of an A2 colour poster map of England in 1086, again by the peerless Steve Luxton. This map will show areas of interest, mystery and danger.
Sent a short while after the main package in its own poster tube, this map will be sent to all backers who have chosen the Hardback tier or above.
Stretch Goal - £6600
It only took one of the frantic last days, and we still have one left... So, if we hit this next goal, i will create a custom set of 60-70 odd paper miniatures specifically for Maelstrom Domesday, featuring all of the character livings, NPC types and supernatural creatures. In addition, i will also create a range of printable battle mats for use with the paper miniatures.
These will both be provided as digital downloads at around the time the printed copies are sent out, and will be provided to all backers regardless of tier.
ADD-ONS
We have decided to give backers the options of some add-ons. To take advantage of one of these, simply increase your pledge (without changing the tier) and at the end of the funding period you will be sent a survey asking which rewards you wanted. Simple!
All of these add-ons are print products, and so are available only to backers at the £17+ tiers.
£2.50 - An extra pair of Maelstrom D10's
£5 - A deck of character reference cards. There will be 30 detailing the character livings and another 30 detailing all of the professional abilities. Perfect to have at the table in play or during character creation.
£5 - An additional A2 colour poster map of England
£5 - An additional print copy of the maps and charts booklet.
£8 - A pack of 100 colour Herb reference cards containing a description and all game data
£8 - An extra copy of the "Investigators Handbook" as detailed above. This will be sent with the other books.
£15 - An additional softcover copy of the rulebook, sent with your main order.
£27 - An additional hardcover copy of the rulebook, sent with your main order.
Risks and challenges
The state of partial completion of the project minimises the risks and issues and final release should be on or before the dates stated. Production of the special volumes may take slightly longer depending upon the workload of the printers at the time.
