Welcome to my project!
I am Elaine Hughes, a UK paper artist working under the label Oh Golly Gosh (see ohgollygosh.co.uk for all my work).
For many years now I've had the idea for an illustrated children’s book about a mouse who lives on the moon. This was from way back, when I was still studying and developing as an artist. It was an idea that just wouldn’t go away! Having worked as a professional artist for many years now, I feel like I have the experience and the skills needed to bring this story to life.
So please meet:
This is a book about a mouse who lives on the moon (the moon, as everybody knows, is made of cheese) and what happens when Ginger gets a little hungry…
It’s is a book about cycles, about consequences, and most of all about a very hungry mouse. Every page will be hand illustrated using the stitched paper collage techniques I use for all of my work. Every single detail will be created, coloured, stitched and annotated by hand.
My work is always about using original vintage papers and ephemera, that I treat and colour. This makes every image a unique, layered illustration, full of textures, words, quirks and surprises. Which means, that every time you look at them there will be something new to find.
The richness and quality of every single image matters so much to me. I guess that comes from producing one-off framed pieces that can be hung on the wall. This book represents a new challenge, but I am determined to bring the quality and attention to detail I bring to all my art onto these pages.
The text is all done, and I am working on the illustrations ready for publication. Backers will receive regular project updates as the artwork develops, and be able to follow the evolution of the finished pages.
The actual book 'Ginger and the Moon' will be 32 pages in length, printed in full colour on uncoated stock, giving a lovely matt textural quality to the pages, with sewn hard cover binding and a full colour matt slip case. The book will be in landscape format with an approximate finished size of 20cm x 30cm.
I have put together a variety of interesting and unique rewards for backers at all levels, as you can see. These include:
Set of Postcards
4 large format matt postcards, lovingly wrapped in brown paper and tied with a ribbon, with images taken from the book, and a very distinct Oh Golly Gosh style to the back.
A copy of the hardback printed book. ‘Signed Copies’ come with a personalised message from the author / illustrator on the fly leaf.
An electronic copy of the book suitable for reading on a kindle or other tablet.
Hand Finished Book
A copy of the hardback book, with additional original embellishments and features added by the artist by hand. These will be unique, extra special copies as every single one will have something slightly different and hand created to them. They will each come in a hand-made presentation box.
Limited Edition Print
A limited edition and numbered giclée print of one of the original artwork panels from the book, approximately 30 x 40cm, mounted and ready for framing.
Personalised Art Piece
A completely original and personalised piece of artwork, created especially for you, and based around am original vintage postcard. Backers of this reward will be contacted after funding to discuss the details of the piece.
This is an opportunity to be the one and only owner of a piece of the original artwork from the book. The backer of this reward will be offered a choice of artworks, which will then be mounted, framed, annotated and signed by the artist.
Risks and challenges
The story is already written and the illustrations are well under way as you can see. It is intended that backers can enjoy watching the artwork develop through to completion via regular project updates.
Once completed, the artwork will need to be professionally photographed, and the finished manuscript scheduled for printing. I have made initial enquiries with printers, which has informed the costing of the project.
Alongside my own commitment to the delivery of the project, I also have the assistance of a hard working colleague who is dedicated to bringing Ginger to the page. Though this is our first adventure into publishing, it certainly won't be our last, and we have considerable experience of the book trade generally.
We have prepared an outline programme for delivering the completed book, and currently plan to make delivery of all rewards by March 2018. I will of course keep all backers fully informed of progress as the project develops.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
