Dirty Soles Dance is a contemporary dance company, based out of Brooklyn, NY. The Company was created in 2013 by Raven Jelks, a former dancer with Garth Fagan Dance. DSD has been working on a new piece entitled, "Arriving at Nowhere." The piece is currently a work in progress that has been performed at several small festivals, including SPARK! Dance Forum, Green Space, and Emerging Artists Theatre's New Work Series. The work explores individuality and group dynamic and how those affect the ability to accomplish a single goal. Can individuality, in its truest form, exist within a group, or do its members ultimately have to conform to a single ideal in order to progress?
Dirty Soles Dance would like to turn "Arriving at Nowhere" into our first ever evening-length work (approx. 30-45minutes). We have decided to produce a split-bill performance that also features the work of Katie Mattar and Genna Carey.
Katie Mattar is one of our dancers, and is a vital part of the Company. Katie and Genna have been friends for quite some time, and have been in the process of developing a new work, "Us Against Whatever." The work explores contrasts in dynamics and is still in the early stages. Both Katie and Genna are excited to finally have a place to present their work!
The project is set to premiere in late January/early February 2015. We would love to hold it at the Center For Performance Research in Brooklyn, NY, but due to the fact that we are currently paying for everything out of pocket, this seems a bit impossible. In order to pay for the space, staff, and of course PAY OUR DANCERS, we need a little help from you!
All funds raised will go towards space rental, technical equipment rental, costumes, and performance stipends for the dancers.
Risks and challenges
Every project has potential obstacles. As a dance company, we are faced with a very unique set of risks. A major challenge will be acquiring a space for the dates/times we have discussed. January is right around the corner, and it could be difficult securing the venue of our dreams in such a short amount of time. With that being said, we are completely prepared to handle the situation should it present itself. As dancers, we have accrued a vast network of costume designers, lighting/sound designers, other dancers, and performance venue owners. We have several backup plans that will enable the performance to go on without a hitch should we have a problem acquiring a specific venue.
There will be no obstacle that we cannot overcome. We are confident in the quality of our work, and have faith in the process. We have been hard at work on crafting this piece and no matter what, when you put 10 creative people in a room together, magical things happen!
