About

The Facts: 1 in 3 women report a traumatic birth. Of those, 1 in 4 will develop full-blown PTSD.

This is a film about one woman's journey, just one of the millions of women who experience PTSD in the United States as a result of a birth trauma.

Barbara Caioli, along with Penny Simkin, author, doula and birth educator, and Walter Zamojski are collaborating their knowledge and creativity to tell this moving and timely story.

The final theatrical quality production will allow Barbara’s story to be beautifully told on film.  We envision this film’s potential for being part of a public discussion about the important issue of birth trauma.   We will examine Barbara's journey from healthy, happy, expectant mother to woman living a nightmare. Unfortunately, much of our healthcare system and the public fail to recognize it.  In fact it is often trivialized. "You have a healthy baby, don't you?"

We will interview experts in the field of birth trauma.  We will examine its  effect on spouses and families and what they can do to help.

This is also a hopeful story.  In Barbara's case, it was her art, dance, that gave her a path to recovery. It became the medium that she used to tell her story. Art became the life force that turned the tide of her suffering.

Dance and film have much in common. Dance is motion, light and sound. It is a sister art to film. Breathtaking dance films such as Wim Wender’s Pina have brought to life the inner world of the choreographer. We want to capture Barbara’s drive to create against the gravity of her trauma. This will be the film that tells that story.

Risks and challenges

All projects, especially movie projects face challenges. Weather, location surprises, and sudden schedule conflicts are unpredictable. We will be recording dancer performances. Dancer injuries are possible. Crew mishaps are possible.

We've already been doing our homework and tackled many challenges. In the making of our promo we had weeks of back and forth with record labels and in turn found our own composer. One of our principal dancers had a foot injury and still danced for us when we needed a clip for the promo! We have understudies and have budgeted insurance to cover costs of equipment failures.

We are a collaborative group. We share our ideas and video clips with others, get feedback, meet together and discuss what works and what doesn't. We may bump heads at times, but we get along!

The bottom line is we are not quitters. We started with no budget, but a passion for a story that needs to be told. We will tell that story and tackle challenges by reaching to each other and our partners who share that passion.
