About this project
"Scattered Birdz walked on stage with a virgin set list... and left us needing a cigarette!" ~ Skot Rieffer (excerpt from a review of our very first show).
On April 29th we played a show at Triple Rock in Minneapolis opening for The Shondes... and the audience clapped along to "When Hawks Fly"! :)
When Hawks Fly is the title track to our up-coming album. This in-studio video was done by a friend and colleague of ours with the specific and dual purpose of promoting our Kickstarter project and raising awareness about our band and our up-coming album. It was filmed during an actual album recording session (no, we're not faking, we're actually singing and playing instruments during LIVE recording at Natural Sound Studio!) so that you can see exactly what we're working on. He did this video for free, because he's awesome and he believes in our music. We hope you enjoyed it, and please visit his website at www.stevengagner.com
Presently, we are working to achieve the following goals: The recording/mixing/distribution of our album, "When Hawks Fly", which includes paying an artist to create stunning album artwork, (already in commission by local Twin Cities artist Whittney A. Streeter!) and ordering band merchandise (our first official Scattered Birdz t-shirts! Buttons! Bumper Stickers! Hats!, etc). All of this will take a lot of planning and designing and requires upfront cost. (Like paying an expert to design a logo, creating and ordering t-shirts and merchandise to sell at shows, which will in turn help fund future recording/touring endeavors, registering the band as an official LLC, and a great deal more)! This is your opportunity to help us reach our financial goal. If we don't reach it, we get nothing, so your help and support in spreading the word means a lot to us!
About us: Scattered Birdz began 5 years ago with the initial song-writing process of band-leader Bonnie Hering who is a classically-trained-percussionist turned rock-star. About two years ago, with the help of our good friend Craigslist.org and some social networking, she invited some awesome musicians who were excited about her music and making it come alive. Within one year of pulling together the band, Scattered Birdz was tearing up the Twin Cities music scene with a powerful and dynamic sound. It's been a long and winding road, but the end is just beginning and this band is ready to finish an album!!!
Our talented band members include Bonnie Hering (vocals/guitar/piano) Brian Remme (Drums), Dan Kennedy (Cello/Bass/back-up vocals), Emily Samsel (violin) and - recently - her hubby William Samsel (Electric Guitar) who has been sitting in with us at shows. :)
What do we sound like? We definitely have an Indie Rock side, as well as a soft Folk side. Both halves are influenced by a wide range of musical genres, including Classical, Blues, Eastern European, Latin, and much more! Lyrically, we mesmerize you with poetic lines that dig at your heart and soul. Natural elements flow in and out of the "sultry" lead vocal lines (as literally described by our fans), such as romantic references to birds (this is a coincidence, by the way, but we like it), synonyms that intertwine heart strings with spider webs, and puns that infer weeping to willows. Our instrumentation is diverse (guitar, piano, cello, violin, drums, bass, accordion, harmonica, mandolin & ukulele) and that - combined with strong vocals, unique harmonies and a plethora of worldly influences - we never fail to turn heads and captivate an audience!
When Hawks Fly will be our first album, but will not be our last. Plans are already in motion for future recording, new songs are being written, and brainstorming for collaborative projects that benefit important causes (including spreading awareness about preserving Native American culture and natural resources!), are all part of the long-term goal.
We are excited to get our album finished and - as we have already begun the recording process - are projecting completion by the end of this summer (2012)! We are looking forward to giving back in as many ways as possible and making our music fly. And... we can't wait to share it with YOU!
