About

Hidden Asset is a real-time stealth game in the vein of Commandos and Shadow Tactics but also inspired by Fallout, X-COM, the Batman Arkham series and of course Hitman.

The world of Hidden Asset has been suffering under financial crisis for several years. In a desperate attempt to mitigate this crisis, the government gave corporations complete freedom to do business however they wanted. This eventually led to companies hiring assassins to take out their competition. You’re such an assassin. But you’re just starting out. And before you know it, you’re caught up in some even shadier business that has far-reaching consequences.

Since Hidden Asset is a stealth game, sneaking and staying hidden is core to the gameplay. When you’re on a mission, a stealth meter keeps track of how stealthily you’re going about getting the job done. If your stealth rating reaches zero, police will arrive to the scene, complicating your job considerably. And how much money you make from completing the job is also based on your stealth rating.

To help you get the job done discreetly, gadgets and weapons will be available for you to purchase with the money you make. And if you end up getting discovered anyway, a simple but versatile combat system allows for some tense and hectic confrontations.

But it’s best to stay hidden in the shadows, as you’re just an average guy that can be taken out by a couple of shots or well-placed punches. You need to be smart about how you take out your enemies.

I am! My name is Christian Knudsen, I’m 40 years old, and I live in Denmark with my wife and son. I’ve been making games for a long time, with my most well-known probably being the freeware game Ascii Sector. I’d love to eventually make games for a living, but for now, I pay the bills as a freelance translator. Being self-employed means that I sometimes have plenty of time for game-making and sometimes none at all. Hidden Asset is my first go at a commercial game, and if it is a success, it would allow me to do game-making full time.

I’m a one-man operation, so I do all the design, programming and graphics (with a few exceptions). While there are certainly drawbacks to doing almost everything myself, such as the development cycle being longer than if it were a team of 12, there are also positives. There’s no risk of team members jumping ship and leaving me stuck without a programmer, for example, and there’s no wasted time managing a team and having hours of meetings to make sure everybody’s on the same page.

I’ve been working on Hidden Asset in my spare time for eight years. That’s right, eight years! It’s taken that long partly because I’ve programmed everything from scratch, partly because I’ve had to learn a whole bunch of stuff in the process -- but mostly because only being able to work on it in my spare time means that there have been months where I haven’t been able to work on it at all.

The game is now at a stage where most of the hard work is done. The engine is done, the game mechanics have mostly been dialed in (the melee combat can use a bit more work), the first two missions of the game are done. All my own custom tools for designing and building levels, doing scripting, animating cutscenes, and a whole lot more are also done. The frame is there, and with the first two missions done, I’ve already begun to fill it in (the current plan is for the full game to feature 15-20 missions and offer 10-12 hours of gameplay).

But I’m still only able to work on it in my spare time. To be able to finish the game and not spend another eight years doing so, I need to be able to work on it full time. Hence this Kickstarter campaign. With the funds from a successful campaign (as well as my own modest savings), I will be able to work on the game full time for at least two years, which will be enough to finish it.

Part of the funds will also be used to pay for all the cutscene art and character portraits needed for the full game, which will be made by the same talented artist (Luis Guaragna) who did the artwork you see in the demo's cutscenes and portraits.

Risks and challenges

In my experience, there are three primary risks and pitfalls in crowdfunded video game projects: Team, Technical and Time.

I’ve lost count of how many indie projects I’ve seen fall apart because it has lost an essential team member. Most often a programmer. And most often because the programmer was only working on the project part time while still having a day job to pay the bills. The team making Hidden Asset is just me. And I’m not going anywhere. But if I should suffer some terrible illness or accident that rendered me unable to work on the game, I would at least try to wrap up what I’d been able to make until that point in order to release some sort of playable game. And if even that wouldn’t be possible, I would release everything in its current state: source code, artwork, design documents, custom tools.

Another pitfall for indie projects in particular is the technical aspects of making a game. Too often, the project as pitched is a vague idea that the project creator hasn’t sufficiently explored the feasibility of. There is no demo -- or if there is, it is too barebones. So, when time comes to make the promised game, the team or sole creator realizes that it actually isn’t possible to make it as promised, if at all. I deliberately didn’t make a Kickstarter campaign until I had a fully playable demo (or ‘vertical slice’ to use industry lingo). I have already overcome the technical hurdles.

Finally, development can take longer than expected, and the project eventually runs out of money. Team members can no longer be paid and move on to other projects. The project stalls and eventually crashes. I plan on two years of full-time work to finish Hidden Asset. But smarter people than me have had their plans foiled, so the only responsible thing is to have a backup plan. Mine would be to return to working on the game part time. I would still have made tremendous progress in the two years working on it full time, so finishing it within a reasonable timeframe should still be possible.
