The TrackStand, the adaptable bicycle stand by Od Designs
The light, compact and robust bike stand, makes cycle cleaning and maintenance easier. Handmade in Yorkshire for cyclists everywhere.
Here at Od Designs, we approach everything we do with the intention of making it as simple as possible, in both design and manufacture. We are a father and son team and pride ourselves that we hand make all our products right here in Yorkshire from locally sourced materials and processes.
The TrackStand is a folding, lightweight, bicycle stand that supports the bike via the rear triangle.
Made from high grade aluminium alloy extrusion, galvanised steel pressings and nylon support yokes, it is rugged and durable.
Not only can it support a bike on it’s own but TrackStands can be linked together in multiples to support any amount of bikes, for display or storage.
The TrackStand is ideal for supporting the bike while cleaning and the cranks can be spun so that the chain can be lubricated and gear indexing can be checked or adjusted.
Early last year we were asked by Sandy Gilchrist, Specialized Team mechanic and Ireland Track Team coach and mechanic, if we could develop a better bike stand than was already commercially available for use at track events.
After discussing his requirements, we set too and within an hour or so, had the basis of what we have named the TrackStand. Sandy loved the first prototype I showed him and asked if we could produce ten for the World Track Championships at the Paris Velodrome.
They worked great and since then, we have refined the basic design of the TrackStand, to make manufacture simpler and to make nesting large amounts of TrackStands easier, essential for teams where space in transport vehicles is at a premium.
The first successful prototypes have been with Sandy for almost a year and in that time have travelled around the World, being used at just about every type of competitive cycling event there is and in all that time there hasn't been one component failure.
The aluminium extrusion used will be 6063-T6 alloy, which is more than adequate to support the weight of the heaviest of bicycles.
The material for the seat-stay and chain-stay yokes will be Nylon 66, a highly resilient form of plastic. The pivot hinges, braces and connector dowels will be made from laser cut 1.2mm galvanized steel sheet.
The TrackStand weighs in at 720 grams and can easily support the weight of a 16 kg Down Hill mountain bike.
The TrackStand is amazingly simple to use, in fact it's child's play.
Although only a small business, we have supplied our products to some of the UK’s best known cycling brands and are continually building on our successes.
To create the prototypes and pre-production versions of the TrackStand, we have used readily available stock materials.
These are fine, but are costly in small quantities and don’t help the aesthetics very much.
To make the TrackStand look great and be more affordable, we need to have an Aluminium profile manufactured to our own specification, to have the plastic support yokes injection moulded and to order the sheet metal parts in large quantities.
These processes are expensive and require a large outlay for tooling and minimum order quantities.
Hopefully, that’s where you come in!
With your help, our project will be successfully funded and purchase orders will immediately go out to suppliers to get production started on the dies, moulds and sheet metal components.
Then work will start gearing up the workshop ready for storage, assembly and packaging.
When components and materials arrive, production will start in earnest and rewards will be shipped out on a daily basis until completion.
Risks and challenges
As with any process that requires a supply chain, there can be unforseen circumstances, machinery breakdowns, transport problems, etc. To mitigate against this we have a dual system of suppliers for all components and processes, so should the worst happen we have a backup in place.
The foreseeable risks with assembly are minute due to the simplicity of the product and it’s assembly process. We’re an established business with our own in-house manufacturing capability and excellent relationships with our component suppliers.
Upon successful funding we’ll be in touch to get your delivery details and aim to dispatch rewards within the time frames outlined above.
We promise to keep every one of you up-to-date with every step of the process.
We are buzzing about this product and can’t wait for you to use the TrackStand with your bike.
We would like to thank you all in advance, for your help.
