About

Treasure hunting is never an easy thing to do, especially if the place where you are is full of traps. What makes it even more challenging is that these traps are being activated by the players themselves to hinder the others. During the adventure you have to find out the goals of the other players to be able to avoid their wounding traps, and hit them with yours. Are you ready for that tricky adventure?

ALTARS: Traps of the Deep is our second board game after our first published game: Christmas Tree. The designer is the same, but the solution is a bit different... :)

ALTARS: Traps of the Deep is a highly interactive, competitive board game for 2-4 players, which takes place in a hidden Shrine under the mountain built for an ancient god. You take control of a treasure hunter, who tries to be the most successful by gathering precious crystals from the Shrine and by setting vicious traps against the other players. These traps serve as sacrifice altars for the God of the Deep, so if you hit an opponent with the trap you activated, you will get grace from the God of the Deep in exchange for your opponent’s blood.

During this dangerous journey you can collect crystals in different values and open luck stone chests, with lots of helpful stones in it, with which you can ease your adventure. Moreover, you can collect map pieces that helps you find the Heart of the Earth, which lies somewhere in the last chamber. This is the most precious crystal in the Shrine so you should start searching for it NOW!!

A quick overview:

You will have 8 rounds to explore the Shrine. Each round contains 3 phases. First, each of you will choose an Altar type and a belonging Altar token secretly. With this action you will set a secret trap in the Shrine.

Then you will spend action points to move through the chambers of the Shrine and collect the precious items you can find there. In this phase, it is really important to look closely at the other players’ movement, because this way you can gather information about their chosen trap (which is still a secret), and this way you can find safe spaces to move to.

After the movement you will activate all the chosen traps by revealing its Altar tokens and the players who got hit by one of them, will collect the wounds/curses belonging to that trap. The players, whose trap made a hit, will collect grace from the God of the Deep for each hit.

After the 8 rounds comes the Escape phase, when each player tries to escape from the Shrine according to their current health (the more wounds you have, the less you can move in this phase).

After the escape you will count the points for the crystals, for the graces, for your health and for the curses you gained and the player who gathered the most glory points this way wins the game.

As you read the rules, maybe you think that the game is too mean... In a way, yes it is :), but there is one thing we really have to emphasize: it is not personal. During the game you will always try to hit as many players as you can with your trap , so that way, you are not playing it against a certain person, but against all the opponents.

A more detailed overview of the 3 phases:

First comes the Altar phase in which each player chooses an Altar to activate a trap with it.

You can activate the Altar of Spikes which hits with its spikes each player who is standing on the chosen colored space.

You can activate the Altar of Walls which hits with its arrows each player who is standing adjacent to the chosen colored wall.

You can activate the Altar of Guards which activates the guard statues in the Shrine, and hits each player who is standing adjacent to the chosen colored spear.

You can activate the Altar of the Earthquake which starts an earthquake in the chosen column and hits each player who is standing there.

You can activate the Altar of Secret Doors with which you can open a secret door on the game board.

And finally you can activate the Altar of the Flood with which you let flooding water into the corridors of the Shrine and it moves each player in the chosen direction.

Then comes the Action phase where each player can spend all their action points in player order. The player who chose the leftmost Altar starts this phase. You have 4 action points to spend for 3 possible actions. You can move to an adjacent space, take an item (crystal/treasure map/luck stone chest) from a space where you stand or heal 1 health point.

In this phase it is really important to look closely at the other player’s movement because that is the main source to find out, what trap she/he activated and this way to find out which spaces will be safe for that round.

Finally comes the Trap phase where all the activated Altars will do they trap effect. This means, that each player who is standing on a space which is under the effect of an activated trap, will suffer the effect of that trap (wounds, curses, stunning effects…). Moreover, the player, who activated the trap will get 1 grace from the God of the Deep for each opponent who got hit by the activated trap

After the 8 rounds, you have to escape from the Shrine, as the God of the Deep got enough sacrifices. That means that somewhere on the last game board tile will open the exit and you have to run out, if your remaining health lets you.

After the escape phase the game ends and the player who gathered the most points from the crystals, graces and their health wins the game.

About the Stretch goals:

Kickstarter exclusive stretch goals will be not part of the retail version.

High interactivity

The game has a unique trap mechanism where you have to set traps against your opponents before the actual movement on the board, so you have to be able to find out the other players’ movements to be successful. But as they are setting traps too, you have to find out also the others' possible traps, to know, which spaces are safe on the game board. That means, that during the whole game you have to think of each others' heads which makes the whole game much more fun.

Huge replayability

The game has a modular game board, and the treasures’ placement happens also (semi-)randomly, so in each game you play with a different setting.

Tactical and strategical at the same time

The game offers long term goals, so you have to plan for it, but as the environment constantly changes, you have to be able to adapt to them, if you want to be the best treasure hunter.

Language independent

The game is totally language independent and the components contain easy-to-understand symbols.

You can add our first board game: Christmas Tree to your pledge too, if you want to have some more "family friendly" game as well :). But we can assure you, Christmas Tree could be also a nice challenge for gamers, as it has 3 different difficulty levels, and the 3rd level is a really thinky one.

If you are interested in this game, check this two Dice Tower reviews about the two editions.

Second edition:

How to add games to your pledge?

When you choose one of the pledges, add the price of the add-on to the pledge’s sum. If you have a pledge already, press the "Manage Your Pledge" Button and increase your pledge in the 'Pledge Amount' box by the total price of the add-on. No additional shipping cost is required. After the campaign in the survey you will be able to confirm the details of your pledge (which edition you need).

Important: Our stock of Christmas Tree's 1st edition is limited, so in a case of high demand we will have to remove this add-on. Please always send a notification message via Kickstarter when you add any add-ons to let us track our stock.

The game is totally language independent and will be produced with an English printed rulebook, moreover, you can dowload a German and Hungarian rulebook in pdf (but the German version still needs a few days for the translation).

If any country reaches 100 backers, we will translate the rulebook into that country’s language and make it downloadable.

Shipping over the world is never an easy task and it is really pricy. As we try to have reasonable prices for you, we cover a part of the shipping costs (it is usually 30-60% of the shipping cost, depending on your location). Your part of the shipping cost will be added automatically to your pledge amount based on your location (you can check the costs in the chart below).

We are working with partners, who make it possible to deliver the game into the US, EU and Canada without additional fees. For other regions in some cases you may expect additional customs charges depending on your local regulations.

It is also possible to pick up your copy at this year’s Spiel fair in Essen or in Budapest, this way you don’t have to pay for the shipping. After the campaign ends you have to tell us in the survey, where do you want to pick up the game.

About the Budapest pickup will offer more information later. Until then, if you have any questions, feel free to write us.

If you want to order more copies, just increase your pledge with the price of the copies. Until 4 copies, the shipping cost will not change.

* Unfortunately we cannot deliver the game to Russia, Ukrain, Africa, Middle and South America and Asia (except the countries in the chart). If you are still interested, please send us a message and we will check our further options for the delivery.

Risks and challenges

Although we are running our first Kickstarter campaign, this is not our first board game project, as we already published a successful board game called Christmas Tree. During the publishing of Christmas Tree’s 2 editions, we learned a lot about this industry and found our producing partners to make sure that the game will look like as we imagined.

The base game itself is ready, the graphics are in the final stage, so after the campaign we don’t need more time for game tests, we can start the producing immediately after the finish to be able to keep our delivery deadline.

The designer of the game is the same, as Christmas Tree’s, but don’t be misguided, ALTARS: Traps of the Deep is not so merry… 😊
