About this project
Urban Moonshine is thrilled to announce the vision for our new project, RAILYARD, an apothecary, classroom and community herbal clinic. This project is our mission in action and we are excited to make herbal medicine more accessible to our local community through our clinic, educational offerings and herb shop. At the same time, we are inspired to help organize the herbal community in response to the changing regulatory environment that is affecting community herbalists and herbal businesses across the country.
A lot of thought, time and resources have been put into the project, and to complete it WE NEED YOUR HELP! This project will only happen if our Kickstarter is successfully funded.
RAILYARD does not have the backing of big banks, so it's completion is truly in your hands. TOGETHER WE CAN DO THIS!
What We Are Creating with Your Help
If we successfully fund the project, here’s what to expect:
RAILYARD Apothecary will be an amazing, comprehensive resource for bulk herbs, tinctures and herbal supplies- sourcing locally whenever possible. On our shelves, you’ll find everything by Urban Moonshine, plus much more. We are thoughtfully curating products from small-scale herbalists near and far that meet our standards of quality and spirit. You’ll also find books, plants and lifestyle items beloved by herbalists; both the beautiful and the practical (think handmade knives and botanical prints!). Oh, and artisan chocolate!
While you're here, you'll be able to choose an herbal treat from our tea menu and saddle up with your favorite read or your best friend in our cafe area.
The community herbal clinic at RAILYARD is a cooperative of professionally trained practitioners. We provide access to safe, effective and compassionate support for clients who seek to use herbal medicine for self-care, through flexible one-on-one consultations that rely on the body's own innate healing capacity. We encourage healthy engagement with the natural world and are committed to lowering barriers to the access of herbal medicines whether due to finances, scheduling requirements, or immediacy of need.
You will be able to meet with a professional herbalist to develop a long-term partnership for your healing journey and also, if desired, access skilled support for urgent needs. The clinic will partner with RAILYARD Apothecary to provide you with custom-blended herbs and extracts.
We want to build a place to stimulate learning and conversation. Our educational offerings will offer something for everyone. You'll hear a range of perspectives - herbalists, growers, physicians and allied practitioners and have access to the format that works best for you. Not only will we offer on-site intensives, community classes, and focused, short-format discussions, but also an online platform that will make our offerings available to you anywhere in the country.
A versatile space that will be home to a kundalini yoga studio and a handful of other community classes. The space is cozy yet expansive, with tall ceilings and wide panel windows.
Demonstration Pollinator and Medicinal Gardens + Public Art
While we love open fields and wild forests, we believe that there is an equal place for, and need of, herbalism in the heart of urban landscapes. We're planting gardens to weave some of the green wild back into this place while embracing its rugged industrial history.
We have already begun partnering with students from the University of Vermont to survey the area and envision what this part of the project could look like. Given our cozy proximity to the railroad, the gardens will be an educational tool and pollinator oasis rather than a source of herbs for the apothecary.
We plan to work with the talented local artist Mary Lacy to create a mural bringing life and color to the sprawling concrete walls that are the front of our building. Expect wild plants and buzzing pollinators to add a little beauty and spunk to the place. We're excited to partner with local talent to offer public art for all to enjoy in this historic part of town!
The Future of Herbal Medicine
A Place to Organize
We are ready to host the herbal community as we navigate our collective response to the increased FDA scrutiny that's putting trusted herbalists and herbal companies out of business. Having been a target of FDA scrutiny over the past few years, we're in a unique position to share what we've learned. We plan on hosting The Future of Herbalism forums so that we can put all of our heads and hearts together and take action to keep our beloved herbal traditions securely intact.
Integration and Collaboration
We know that traditional herbalists, even when they work in a modern setting, are some of the best practitioners to support innate vitality, empower folks to take charge of their health, and rewild the human experience. RAILYARD will be a platform to develop awareness of how important and effective herbalists can be in the current healthcare system, by deepening our collaborative partnerships with physicians and allied practitioners through the clinic, and bringing those partners in to our educational curriculum to cross-pollinate diverse perspectives on human and ecological health.
What We Need Your Help With!
We have been busy breathing new life into an old industrial building abutting the train tracks on Burlington's waterfront. In our renovations, we've added walls and ceilings, windows and doors, splashes of color, and all the proper nooks and crannies to house the various branches of RAILYARD. However, there have been some unexpected bumps in the road, so to complete the project we need community backing.
EVERY DOLLAR COUNTS! We are ready to support the herbal community, we are ready to support our local community, we are ready to support you! But first we need your support to do it. If we meet our funding goal, here's how we'll use the funds to complete the project:
- Creating our Classroom: This space was designed as Urban Moonshine's new production space, but with the unexpected need to outsource due to the FDA's clamp-down on herbal producers, we are reclaiming it as a classroom. This will take a bit of work! Funds will be used for sound proofing and acoustics, installing an educational kitchen, partitions for the space, etc.
- Classroom Equipment: Tables and chairs, A/V equipment, lighting, webcast software for live broadcasting classes
- Creating our Community Clinic: It takes a lot to get a community clinic off the ground, and we would like to do it with as little debt as possible because we are committed to accessibility. We need to not only complete our infrastructure, but also make the space welcoming and functional with blinds, desks, seating, and shelving.
- Demonstration Pollinator and Medicinal Gardens: Raised beds, soil testing, signs, seating, plants and trees.
- Mural: Hiring Mary Lacy to broadcast plants and pollinators as public art!
- Completing our Apothecary: With a few finishing touches, we hope for this to be a health-inspiring, memorable place and draw people from all parts of the community. Although we have invested a lot into this space all ready, extra funds will be used for additional shelving and seating. Our goal is to host a lot of community and DIY classes in this space. Help us meet our goal!
Risks and challenges
If our project is successfully funded, our risk lies in ensuring that people show up since we are located just off the beaten path. To this end, we designed RAILYARD to be a destination and anticipate a regular flow of traffic from class attendees, folks visiting the clinic, and Northern Vermonter's in need of herbs and herbal supplies.
Given the current FDA environment around herbalism, there is also the risk that herb shops may begin being regulated in an unprecedented manner. We certainly hope this is not the case, and part of our mission here at RAILYARD is to organize and act as herbalists to ensure our herbal traditions remain in tact.
