Update: New eNcade Major Redesign Overhaul!:
Read more on this in update #9.
$7000: If we hit $500 over our goal we will integrate a full media center, including a video player and music player, built right into our software. This way you can listen to all your favorite tunes on the go or while you're playing your favorite game on the eNcade.
$7800: If we get to $7800, EVERY eNcade reward will come with a new larger 3.5" touch screen as described in update #4.
Over $9000!: We will announce this stretch goal once our original goal is met.
The eNcade is a project we at Nzen Mods have been working on for a while, and from the start we wanted it to have a focus on online multiplayer for retro games. We noticed a huge community for retro console gamers who we thought we could benefit by bringing something new to the table: A portable retro console with online multiplayer support. This sparked the idea for the eNcade, which allowed us to incorporate another great community into our product: The Raspberry Pi. For those unfamiliar with the Pi, it's a small linux single boarded computer that has the form factor and just enough power to work with our product. From then on we have been working on multiple prototype revisions and coding the software.
Although we have held in-house focus groups and received positive feedback on the layout design, we understand any skepticism you see in the current design so we are willing to work with our backers and take their feedback to create a great final design.
Colors: The eNcade's color choices will be determined by our backers. We will hold a survey as an update to receive feedback on what color options people would like to see available. Once we have the list of available colors, the backers that selected an eNcade as a reward will be able to mix and match the button color with the base color, making the eNcade a truly customizable device.
The eNcade will come with a USB WiFi adapter, so you'll be ready to play online. It also comes with a USB charging cable, so don't worry if you lose it, most current smartphone chargers will work!
HDMI: The eNcade has an accessible HDMI out port, so if you get sick of the integrated screen, you can plug it into your television and play with the eNcade's controls or a separate USB controller.
USB: The eNcade also features one accessible USB port, so you can use any USB peripheral you want that's compatible with raspbian. For example say you want to play some games with your friends at your house, just plug in a USB hub or a bluetooth receiver and connect multiple controllers for great retro local multiplayer fun!
Screen: As mentioned the eNcade comes equipped with a TFT touchscreen display so you can navigate through the interface without the need of a keyboard.
Controls: Currently the eNcade sports a directional pad, select/start buttons, 4 action buttons, left/right bumpers and 2 analog sticks (intended for N64, PS1, and FPS titles). The current design holds the directional pad and action buttons towards the top based on the prediction that most titles will be played only using these buttons, however this could change when we make the final design based on the feedback we receive through surveys/questionnaires that we will hold for our backers (mentioned previously).
The eNcade's software has been in the works for a while and has been tested online with NES, SNES, and Genesis emulators and we are currently working on bringing more consoles to the list. However the eNcade also has offline support for the previous list in addition to 2600, N64, GB, PS1 and much, much more!
User Friendly: Our multiplayer delivery service will allow players to find and connect with each other through unique usernames, instead of clunky friend codes.
Game Invites: The software has support for sending and receiving game invites as well as voice chat that is currently under development.
Speed Run Timer: You will be able to time yourself on any game with the eNcade. A real time clock will appear on your screen while you play and later you will be able to publish it to the leaderboards on our website!
OS: The eNcade's software runs on raspbian, so you can switch to the desktop at any time and use it like any other linux computer. If you don't like our software or the raspbian OS don't worry!, you can change out the SD card with any Pi compatible operating system of your choosing, just configure it to work with the eNcade's display which we will be giving a guide on later.
The eNcade is something we truly believe can reach out to many retro gamers alike, and with our backer's help, we can make a great product!
Risks and challenges
Demand: We predict that this project will be popular which will require us to keep up steadily with returning the rewards to our backers in a timely manner. However we have a plan to do so and are prepared to produce the volume of eNcade's that are purchased through this campaign. We are confident that we will be able to see this through and fulfill the rewards as soon as possible.
Servers: We have our server set up and working for our online delivery service, however as suspected it will be a challenge to monitor and ensure satisfaction for each profile. Saying this, we have the appropriate software to do so and a powerful database server that is unlikely to crash. In addition to the customer service we will have available on our website, we are confident once again that we will be able to keep up with demand.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
