A Frozen World of Suspense and Intrigue
Every year, humanity hibernates as global winter covers the planet in cold and darkness. The wealthy slumber through the peaceful winter months in modern hibernation centers and specialized pods, while the poor sleep shoulder-to-shoulder in overcrowded public facilities.
But not everyone sleeps. And not every winter is peaceful.
A genetic anomaly prevents one in a thousand humans from hibernating. They watch over the hibernating masses and keep essential infrastructure alive while the snow falls. Winter is the time of the Winterwakers - the few who witness the silent beauty of the season.
When Elliot, a shy Winterwaker computer tech, reunites with his grade-school friend Carlos, their world is turned upside-down by a bizarre break-in at a hibernating billionaire's mansion. In the aftermath, Elliot meets Sarah, an embattled public hibernation caregiver whose "Sleepers" are going missing. Together, they must navigate a web of secrets, forge unlikely alliances, and uncover a plot that threatens all of humanity.
Winterwakers is currently published as a multi-part eBook series. The third and final part, titled The Storm, will be available May 26. Parts one and two are currently available for download on all major e-reader platforms.
Bring the Excitement to Print
eBooks are wonderful, but they're not for everyone. Many readers prefer paper books, and paperbacks are still the best-selling format for novels. I get asked about a paperback edition of Winterwakers quite often, and I'd like to offer one to those who want it.
Making a paperback edition isn't a simple thing. I'm an indie-published author with no big publishing house behind me, which means I have to do everything myself, or pay a freelancer to do it for me. For a paperback, this includes:
- Designing a full wrap-around cover that will look good in print
- Formatting and layout of the book contents
- Printing the books
- Shipping the books
That's why I've come to Kickstarter to ask for your support. I've already done the hard work of writing Winterwakers; now I just need that final push to get the paperback edition off the ground, and into your hands.
I'm aiming for the reasonable goal of $1,800 Canadian (about $1,500 US), which will cover the cost of the cover art, the print layout, the printing, the shipping (both from the printer to me, and from me to you), and Kickstarter's fee.
You Want Quality? So Do I
Sure, I could toss Winterwakers into a print-on-demand service, slap a mediocre pre-made cover on it, and call it a day, but that's not my style. This story deserves a top-quality trade paperback edition, one that I'll be proud to put my name on - one that you'll be proud to own.
To that end, I've hired an experienced cover artist (Matt Davis) to give the paperback a professional wrap-around cover. Part of the funds raised will pay Matt for his great work, and I'm excited to share the cover with you when it's ready.
I'll also be paying special attention to the print layout and formatting. Details like chapter headings and section dividers will be designed with care. There are a few liberties with print typography that you don't get with eBooks, and I intend to take advantage of them.
Last, but not least, I've selected a Canadian printing company with the knowledge, equipment, and experience to turn this into a printed book worthy of your support. Keeping my business here in Canada means I get great quality at a fair price, with no foreign exchange. This is why I'm able to offer a copy of the paperback at a reasonably-priced reward tier.
Exclusive Rewards, Because You're Awesome
As Kickstarter backers, you're getting much more than just a book. This will be the Kickstarter Edition of the Winterwakers Omnibus. The fact that it's a Kickstarter edition will be clearly marked on the back cover and the bookplate (the first page inside the book).
The 8x5 trade paperback will be a hefty six-hundred-page (likely more) omnibus, collecting all three of the eBooks in a single volume. It will also include a special epilogue not found in the eBooks, and three appendices worth of background material, giving you a deeper look into the Winterwakers universe.
And if you want something really special, I have other cool stuff planned for the higher reward tiers, including short stories, autographed copies, actual drink coasters from the bar in the story, and other Winterwakers-themed rewards you won't find anywhere else.
In addition to all the above, every backer who pledges $7 or more gets their name printed in the Kickstarter Backers section at the end of the book (but if you prefer to remain anonymous, that's totally fine).
Back Now and Get It First
Don't wait until it's up on Amazon - that's not gonna happen any time soon. If you want a Winterwakers paperback, this is it. Until every single reward has shipped, Kickstarter will be the only way to get the Winterwakers omnibus, eBook or paperback. Backers get it first, no matter what.
Risks and challenges
Winterwakers is already finished, with Parts 1 and 2 currently available as eBooks. Part 3 is finished, and will be edited and published as an eBook by the time this Kickstarter is done. There's no risk of me not completing the book itself.
That said, there are still a few things that need to get done before the paperback can go to press and ship to backers. Cover art needs to be completed, the layout and formatting needs to be finalized, and the printer needs to print and ship the books. I've partnered with experienced professionals with proven track records, and I have every expectation of success.
If I run into problems with any of the above, I can still make this happen. There are plenty of good cover artists, graphic designers, and printers out there, so if my chosen partners can't deliver (which, again, is highly unlikely) I will have a fall-back plan in place. This may result in delays in shipping the rewards, but if this Kickstarter gets funded, I'll make sure the books get delivered one way or another.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
