Welcome to SCOUNDRELS, a 3-6 player push-your-luck tabletop game, that plays anywhere from 45-120 minutes. (Whether playing the "skirmish" or "epic" variant.)

In the Sea of Troubles, amongst the waves and jungles and ports and perils, opportunity awaits any ruffians willing to fight. Whether attacking the Governor’s Gangway, or sailing past Risky Reef Town, there’s plenty of plunder to be pillaged! But beware, such a trove of treasure will bring others, nasty, greedy, and willing to fight. If you're not careful, you may even end up a ghost pirate, haunting those still alive.

So take your treasure, steal it from others, and bury it if you can, for in the tales written three hundred years from now, will you be the most infamous of pirates?

Players use a random hand of Action cards (Swords, Sails, Cannons, Wilds) to move their ships around a cloth map - pillaging, boarding, cannoning, and burying treasure - trying to gain the most Infamy points. It’s a wild, rubber-banded game, where the lead can change constantly, and nothing is certain until the tale is ended.

The game plays in rounds (once around the table). 

  • One player starts, taking as many Actions as desired or possible, then play moves to the next player. That player does the same. 
  • After every player has gone, players bid for who starts the next round. 
  • Players then discard unwanted Action cards and draw back up to 8 cards.

During your turn you can take as many Actions as you're able and want to, in ANY order. Move, Shoot, Move. Or Shoot then Move. Or Pillage then Move then Shoot. You can use as many of the appropriate cards as desired, needed, or wanted in any Action. Play a bunch of Swords to pillage, or just a few. It's all in your hands!

Players compete to gain the most Infamy tokens and Treasure cards.

But each player gets a turn before anyone draws new cards. Spend too many cards, and watch your neighbor come calling for your Treasure! Sink and turn into a ghost ship, or be left penniless after your greed gets the best of you. 

ENDING - Once all of the quests are completed, a couple pirates are sunk, or the ports are drained of their Treasure, the game ends. The player with the most Infamy and Treasure is the winner!

I believe the mechanics to be in fantastic form. I've playtested this game extensively over the past three years, taking it to KublaCon, DunDraCon, Protospiel San Jose, countless board game nights and game events. I made a particular effort to seek out new players, though I also honed the game with a group of veterans. The game is where it is due to so much invaluable feedback from playtesters.

We’re looking to produce 1,500 copies of the game (the minimum we could negotiate from manufacturers for a game with this many unique components). We’ll ship most anywhere in the world, and shipping is included in the tier cost (prices vary depending on your country).

The following graph shows where the money is going (this is predicated on 100% success).

We expect to ship the game before the end of 2015, in time for the holiday season. Print-n-Plays will go out shortly after we reach our funding goal.

 We have several elements of the game that we're looking to backers to help design.

  • Ship names - Each backer will get the opportunity to submit a ship name! At the end of the project, we'll pick a bunch of our favorites and put them up to a vote for all backers!
  • Personalized copy - In addition to the crowd-sourced ship names, we're also offering a personalized copy of the game where you get to name all 7 ship cards in your copy of the game!*
  • Deluxe Tier: Design an Advanced rule/variant - We're leaving space at the back of the rule-book for game variants. Perhaps you have a drinking game idea, or an advanced wind and currents rule. You'll get a pre-release copy of the game and time to come up with your own rule!*
  • Deluxe Tier: Design a Quest - The game has 15 Quests, and we'd like your help to come up with a few more. With this tier, you'll get a pre-release copy of the game and time to come up with your own Quest!*
  • Deluxe Tier: Design A Quirk - The game has 10 Quirks, which are special abilities that can be played with. With this tier, you'll get a pre-release copy of the game and time to come up with a Quirk for the game!*

*All of these will be moderated at the discretion of the designer. We won't accept anything for the main-release version inappropriate or out of character. Each Deluxe backer will have at least 6 weeks after receiving their prototype to send in their submissions.

SHIPPING AND NAMING CONCERNS

We ship to most locations in the world. Shipping costs should be included in the pricing, according to your location. Depending on your country, VAT and other taxes may still apply.

PLEASE NOTE: We are not shipping to Brazil, Africa, or Russia due to various high fees and complications.

Any names submitted for ship names will be reviewed by the designer. No offensive names will be accepted for voting for the main shipping game, however individual Deluxe versions can have rude, though not hateful ship cards. Any name may be declined at the designer's discretion, and you may be asked to submit another.

THE SCOUNDRELS BEHIND SCOUNDRELS

Randy O’Connor - A video game artist and designer whose credits include Waking Mars and Escape Goat 2, he is excitedly making the leap into tabletop adventures. Several years ago he wanted to play a game about pirates that made him feel like a scoundrel. After almost three years of design, playtesting, and artwork, he's ready to get this game on to your table. 

Tyler Brown - A friendly, knowledgeable biz guy who has known Randy since they were in elementary school. His day job puts him in contact with advertisers, manufacturers, and more. Plus he has an all around comfort and skill with business that will see this project through to completion. (Randy is very glad to have him on board helping make Scoundrels a reality.)

Risks and challenges

I've brought on Tyler to make sure that we deliver the game you've ordered.

We have extensively researched and talked with many manufacturers, and received cost estimates from each. Once funded, we'll finalize production materials, order and check sample copies, and choose the best manufacturer based on experience, materials provided, and insight from other board game publishers and developers.

There may be delays, as can happen with any multi-part manufacturing process, though we estimate copies to ship before the holidays.

We'll be working with a manufacturer we trust, and we'll address any delivery or copy problems on an individual basis.
