About this project
Mad Match combines strategy, memory, and cut-throat game play in a fun and exciting new card matching game from the creator of Mad Science The Card Game.
It's easy to learn and loads of fun to play!
We are halfway through the campaign and more than 2/3 to our goal, so it seems like a good time to announce some stretch goals. Share with your friends and help get the word out there. We have even more great stuff in mind if we blow these away!
It's just another day at the Annual Mad Scientist Convention when Dr. Emil Knutberger shows up... AGAIN!
He's seeking revenge for being thrown out of the convention - just like last year- and this time he has unleashed a ton of dangerous monsters - in triplicate! Round up as many of his dastardly creations as you can before they destroy the city.
You'll learn to play Mad Match in less than 5 minutes, but you'll spend years mastering its subtleties.
"On a scale of 1 to 10, I rate Mad Match a definite 10!"
- Jim Dunaway, Organized Play Program Manager, RealmsMasters Game Forge
"Great gameplay, easy to learn, and totally puntastic!"
- Anthony Just, Alternivese
The basic set includes 54 cards with hilarious and quirky art right out of the Mad Science The Card Game Universe and is perfect for two players. Pull a few cards out of the deck and you can play a classic matching game with children of all ages, or get addicted to our unique Mad Match solitaire variation.
We are also offering the More Madness Expansion that allows:
- Extended play time
- Up to 4 players
- Game deck customization
The basic Mad Match deck is already design, prototyped, and play-tested. We also have basic designs for the More Madness Expansion set, with final art to be determined in part by backers at certain reward tiers. In addition, we've planned a number of stretch goals including exclusive cards, higher quality cardstock and printing, and more, if we exceed out funding goals.
We will be posting instructional videos for several game variations on the Pope Street Games YouTube channel soon. In the meantime, here's a quick overview of Mad Match to get you started.
The Mad Match deck is made up of 54 cards. There are three copies each of 15 monsters with blue or orange backgrounds. There are also nine Action cards with red backgrounds.
Set-up is easy: Lay all cards out, face down, in a grid. If you arrange the cards in six horizontal rows of nine cards each, you will have a nice, large square of Mad Match cards. Now you're ready to start playing.
Player one starts by turning over any three cards, looking for matches. A pair or a triplet should immediately be collected. Action cards can either be played or collected and saved for a later turn, depending on the card.
Action cards add an exciting, strategic element to the game. Some will cause cards in play to be frozen face up for the rest of the game. Others allow players to remove or steal cards from opponents.
If a player reveals the third card to a pair they've previously collected, they add it as a "spare." If a player turns over an opponent's third card, it is out of play and discarded.
When all cards have been played, collected, or discarded, it is time to score. Each monster card has a scoring matrix. Players can total their scores and stop play after one round, or they can play multiple rounds until one player reaches 150 or more points.
There are a number of additional strategic elements that enhance gameplay, as well as a number of game variations including solitaire. But these are the basic instructions in a nutshell, and they are all you really need to get started.

This chart gives a quick look at our general funding breakdown. If we exceed our goals, these percentages will change a little, but this should give you an idea of where the money is going.
The fees for Kickstarter and processing of funds account for up to 10% of our funds. Printing costs for cards and packaging (printed deckboxes) is about 70% of our goal. Producing additional rewards (t-shirts, stickers) will take about 20% of the budget, leaving a few points for miscellaneous expenses like photocopying instructions sheets.
I started Pope Street nearly 20 years ago to release independent music and fiction. In 2012, I launched Pope Street Games, our tabletop game division, with the international release of Mad Science The Card Game. Mad Match will be our second official release, and we have several other exciting projects waiting in the wings.
Transylvania Star, our unique dice gaming system will be pre-released with Mad Match, with an expected campaign at the end of 2016. You can also look for Serum Z, a collaborative tabletop game like nothing you've ever played to be released in 2017.
I am a Dad, a writer and musician, a creative director and project manager. I have worked in high-tech for many years, and I love comics, games, and cooking over open fires. Creating games like Mad Match is one of my favorite side-jobs, and with Pope Street Games, I am hoping to make it a more substantial part of my life.
Big things are in store for Pope Street Games and I'm so pleased that you're coming along for the ride!
Risks and challenges
A few years ago I released Mad Science The Card Game on Kickstarter. It went on time and with a few exciting stretch goal extras, and I am planning for the same level of success with Mad Match. The game is fully tested and core art is final and approved. Printers and vendors have been selected and engaged, and we're ready to rock on fulfillment. With your support we will be launching another awesome card game while taking a big step toward getting Pope Street Games on the map as the next great independent game developer.
We have kept our budget simple, to make sure our goal is achieved, but we have planned to scale if we exceed expectations. At this point, I believe we've planned for all reasonable possibilities, but if we do encounter any unexpected issues or delays, I promise we will be transparent and forthcoming and keep you in the loop. Our number one priority is getting this exciting new game in your hands expeditiously so you can be mad matching as soon as possible!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
