🇺🇸Mexico’s La Ruta de la Muerte (“The Route of Death”) is as perilous as it is risky. It is a journey no one should ever have to endure alone.  Lucia is a desperate mother fleeing from her Guatemala homeland, as she is determined keep her young daughter safe. A new life is promising, and she must risks embarking on an uncertain journey across Mexico’s rugged “Route of Death.”

Lucia must be resourceful to survive the expedition to find sanctuary in America. While traveling, she meets Matias, an offhanded father, making the trek with his son, Nicolas. Lucia and Matias are two different parents on one courageous journey to freedom.

They will work together through challenges and endure the rising tides of hopelessness to make it safely to the border, but when the harsh realities of “La Ruta” push them to a breaking point, their survival instincts kick in and force them to make unimaginable choices.

Together, they will sacrifice everything they hold close to their hearts to reach the United States.

🇺🇸Guatemala, the second most populated country in Central America has a long history of devastating violence, political instability, and poverty that has led to a mass exodus of its people starting from the late 1970’s. Sixty percent of the nation lives in destitution, and the expanding criminal activity, along with the political turmoil, demonstrate a society where violence, rape, murder, and extortion overwhelm numerous lives.  These people face issues that are too ridiculous for us to comprehend. They are so helpless and desperate to escape these horrifying conditions that they willfully travel 2,653 miles on foot, or by whatever means necessary, into Mexico’s extremely dangerous terrain to try and reach the U.S. border.

Migrants traversing through Mexico often suffer indignities such as kidnap, rape and extortion from gangs, cartel members and police. Why would they willingly subject themselves to such horrors? Is it because they seek a better job in the states? Sadly, there is a long-standing belief that migrants come to America to seek better work conditions.  While this judgement is partially true, the choice to face the dangers upon “The Route of Death” has far more justifications for their livelihood than job.

With La Ruta, I want to peel back the curtain and peek into the window of a family that has made the hard decision to uproot their lives to make the dangerous trek north. Through hours of researching true stories and documentaries on the migrant exodus, I have created a narrative around the dangers they face on La Ruta De La Muerte (“The Route of Death”).  In showing this journey, it is my hope that it will make the audience feel compelled to act. I want this to be an intimate portrayal of a universal experience in today's globalized society with a crude closeness depicting this migrant family’s journey. I hope this narration helps provide a deeper understanding of the importance of family. While this allegory is meant to be personal, political, and universal, I want the overall arch to reflect the human condition that will in turn make us all reflect. I want to tell this story now because it is time to change the way we perceive the migrant exodus.

                                                                                           -    Star Victoria

🇺🇸We know you have heard this before, but it's true. Making a quality film cost money. Everything from concept to the final product takes tons of effort from talented people. We're hoping to raise at least $40,000 to get us through the production.

LOCATIONS: This is our largest expense, as you can see from below.  We have to house all cast & crew in hotels or Airbnb's for 6 days in Grand Terrace, CA. Because will transport all cast & crew to a location outside the Los Angeles 30-mile zone, we will also have to pay for three meals a day for 30 people.   This is because we want to make sure our team doesn't have to travel an hour and half to and from set every day. It is dangerous to drive for such a long time after a 12-hour work day.  We want to make sure our talent and crew are safe, and their time is respected. The locations we will film at were very generous to give us student discounts, but even then, we are still paying $1300.00 a day for most locations.  So, as you can see, we desperately need your help. This story is beautiful. It is timely, and it will move you in ways that only a great movie can.

Our production budget to make the movie is $34,995.00 But we are asking for $40,000 to cover the Kickstarter fee and the Fiscal Sponsorship Fee. Will you please support us and help us meet our goal?

But we have a stretch goal of 50,000.00 to cover expenses for rewards as well as pay additional crew. While we appreciate the volunteers and are humbled that they believe in us and this project to donate their time. We would really love to pay our crew.

¿Podrías apoyarnos y ayudarnos a cumplir nuestro objetivo?

Risks and challenges

🇺🇸One of our biggest challenge is working with children. We are limited with our time to utilize child actors, so we have scheduled La Ruta to shoot in seven days rather then what would probably have been five days. These two extra days raised our budget.

We also have a river scene and we will need to hire local police officers to make sure no civilians try to swim in the river while we are filming. This, too, adds to our budget.

We have carefully considered of all the ways to make this film as realistic and moving as possible, but in the safest manner as possible. We are an extremely prepared team of filmmakers. Our director started location scouting and locked in many locations in December. We trust her, and we are all very excited to work together.

As with any film production, unforeseen circumstances can arise, but we have done our best to put together a dedicated, honest, and hardworking team of filmmakers. Our goal is not only to make a wonderful, moving motion picture, but also we want to do it safely. We are very confident that we will as our director, Star Victoria is also a well established 1st Assistant Director. Safety is her top priority, always.

This production will push us and help us grow as filmmakers, but we won't be able to make it without reaching our goal! So please donate to La Ruta today!
